Update 30 May 2012
I request the blog readers to share their views if this post helped them personally in taking a decision. Obviously, I would be open to criticism if the expected cut-off are missing the bulls-eye by a big margin (>80-100 points for top 5 colleges). However, it is quite possible that the cut-off could be much higher going by the solid response to the scheme this year. Keeping the fingers crossed.
All the very best to all DASA Scheme applicants. Good Luck.

Hi all,
My son is an OCI/Australian Citizen. Currently we are in India and my son is pursuing his 11th std here. Is he eligible to take up AIEEE/IIT JEE (with the new format of exam being in place (i.e.one exam for both AIEEEand IIT/JEE from the academic year 2012-13) and also apply through DASA?
Last year OCI/Foreign Nationas were not eligible for AIEEE & NEET. OCI were eligible for IIT JEE and DASA. For year 2013, please await prospectus for these exams.
I am new in muscat and i came to know about this dasa scheme recently , i have currently passed 10 class in muscat itself and i am looking for aieee but hearing about this i want to know about this. firstly i am totaly eligible for this scheme. but i am a bit confuse what actually is SAT, as per the knowledge i got from internet i found out that it is an online exam managed by college board.com whose score are send to NITK .pls correct if wrong, so if this is the case what is the syllabus for this and how many tries do i get for this when to start up with these tests in 11 or 12 th. also is this the only way how NIT's manage meritlist for NRI admissions.
For DASA, you would need to appear for SAT Subject Tests. All the info is available on this very website about SAT 2 tests including syllabus.
Raj,
My son has joined NIIT this year as a DASA candidate. He studied in US and on his 'Provisional Admission Letter', DASA required docs. are, School marts/grades, Passport, Medical certificate only. But, when he went for admission, the authorities requesting various other certificates from the school like, study and character certificate, transfer certificate, migration certicate. Since US schools send marks/grades to the requested colleges by ONLINE, its very hard to get letter/certificates from the school authorities. In this regard, I have requested DASA and they ask to contact NITT.
Now, he admitted with undertaking and trying to get from the schools.
Is any other docs will help to clear this situation? We have produced all available docs from our side. Is any other agencies will do similar kind of requests?
Let me know, if you know further details.
Regards,
srsr
We migrated when my son was in 9th. Before coming I drafted all certificates (since the US schools dont issue these kind of certificates) and got them signed & stamped by the US school to submit at local international school. The staff and the teachers at US school were so helpful & understanding. They did not create any fuss in signing all my docs. The teachers even wrote some recommendation letters for him even with out my asking. Do the same if it is possible. Should not have a problem there. Hope this helps. Best of luck.
Thank you Bharati. Slowly getting one-by-one now and some of the terminologies are different. Character/Conduct certificate called "Recommendation Letter" and High school Diploma represents 'Transfer Certificate'. Principal/school authorities do not issue 'Migration Certificate' and they gave a letter saying that these certificates can not be issued from the school board.
I hope these all docs will work. Appreciate your comments.
Regards,
srsr.
Hello,
Can i know what is the fee structure for DASA for the year 2013-2014?
Regards
DASA scheme for 2013-14 would be announced sometime in Dec 2012 and the details would be known at that time only.
sir
i have already studied in NIT jaipur since one year but now my parents are incapable of paying the high fees of 7000$ . can i get any hardship allowance?
I am not aware about any such allowance. Try getting some loan from banks.
Dear Raj Sir,
My son got admission in MNNIT in CSE. We owe our success to you. May god belss you with long life and good health to continue this service with same energy and enthusiasm.
We are from Hyderabad. Anyone wants to get familiar before we report for admission? Also I have below questions. I tried calling MNNIT several times but the lines were always busy. Please respond if someone has an answer. Thanks.
1. Is hostel accomodation available for him immediately upon reporting? We (both parents) will be accompanying him. So will we also get some temporary guest accomodation or should we stay outside?
2. What are all the things my son needs to take with him for his stay at the hostel? Also are there any stores in and around MNNIT to buy some big items?
3. What abt his books? When and where can he buy?
Thanks a lot for the response. Regards
hi guys !!! I am Prakrit Shrestha from Nepal and I am going to NIT Trichy….anyone else going there??? … lets B frens !!!! mail me >>> prakritshrestha@hotmail.com
Hi
It is a nice place. I am a prospective candidate for next year. What was your SAT2 SCORE AND which branch that u r joining.
Thanks.
Vidhya.
Hi,
I have recieved admission in MNIT jaipur for CE. But they are asking for a SAT score card/certificate. I hvaent recieved anything of the sort. Please advice.
Does anyone know the reporting date to NIT Calicut? I see its given as 18-20th July. Does that mean we can come on any of these days or will the exact date be given later?
You could report on any of the dates during 18-20 July.
Dear RT,
Thank you very much for ur prompt replies for my earlier questions.I would like to know about two things
1.Will SAT 2 continue to be the criteria for admissions next yr as AIEEE is being repaced by ISEEET next year. Will the scores in ISEEET be taken as a criteria.
2. When will DASA announce its admission scheme in 2013-2014
1) SAT2 is likely to continue
2) By Dec 2012.
Hi Raj and others,
I have 2 questions:
1) Is NIT Delhi operational i.e. does it have campus of it's own now?
2) Difference between Computer Engineering and Computer Sc. branch? Is it just terminology and depends on courses one opts for eventually?
Thanks.
1) NIT-Delhi has identified the land for the campus but is years away from own campus. The classes for NIT-D used to be in NIT-W but have shifted to temporary campus in Delhi itself from last year.
2) For best answer, please go through the syllabus of the two branches and see the difference.
hi,
anyone going to mnnit allahabad?especially the mechanical branch!lets get closer before the college starts~~email me at gaurav_118pant@yahoo.com
Is there anyone who is joining MANIT Bhopal? I have got admission in the CSE branch.. What all documents are we required to submit at the time of joining?
Is any girl student selected to nit warangal from dammam (saudi arabia)……
First round list of seat allotment as per AIEEE is out, according to which most preferred NIT clearly is Trichy followed by warangal. I am little confused as my son will go through the process next year and as per the DASA nri preference top choice is surathkal followed by Trichy. Why so? Any specific consideration while filling the choice?
Dear kumar,
AS RT has already commented earlier it is due to the cosmopolitan nature and proximity to airport.Has your daughter already given the sat 2 tests.Any idea regarding the continuance of sat2 as a ctiteria for admssion in 2013-2014
I personally think that the scheme would continue as it fills a genuine need of NRI's/OCI in the absence of level playing field for competitive exams. Moreover ,SAT2 scores are expected to continue since FN/OCIs can't appear for AIEEE exam.
I got in IIIT Allahabad. Anybody going to IIIT Allahabad? Let us coordinate. My email is kiransamayam@yahoo.com
Dear sir,
Which of these do you think is better for cse: JNTU hyderabad or NIT warangal( considering placements and faculty) ?
Thank you
NIT-W is far ahead.
The tier 1 US software giants regularly recruit from IIIT-H. It’s CSE branch is 2nd best after 5-old IITs.
However, Mech and CSE are at two extremes- you need to make-up your mind what fascinates you most. Choose a branch such that you can plan to continue in that field.

I see everybody is opting for CSE/ECE/Mech. Is there any scope of job for EEE. My son got that in Trichy. Now I am worried, will he get a job after pasing out?
Dear Ganapathi,
Do not worry /be assured and EEE is a good branch ( + from reputed NIT/Trichy) and he will get a job easily. The key is to develop soft skills ( mainly communication/presentation skills). I can tell this as I am a RECT ian.
regards
k. Manikandan (from Bahrain)
Thanks Mani ji. I had been out-of-station for a week, so couldn’t reply to many queries. Anyways, I appreciate that the community tried to help each other as all of have something special to contribute.
Hi Ganapathy
my son is also admitted to NITT for EEE and see you there on 18th. We are from Dubai

Hello sir, My question is regarding residential qualification for dasa quota. The two years abroad should be in one school/place or can be in two different countries? For e.g class 11 in Dubai and class 12 in Muscat?
No problems. 2 years (11/12) outside India is needed
Hello all 🙂
i am a student from Dubai and have gotten admission into PEC for mechanical. I would like to know if there is anybody else going to PEC from Dubai? Lol, I'm planning to! I'm from Dubai. I have a doubt though. Do we have to submit the USD 7000 draft on 27 June too? Along with a DD of 1000 rs?
Can anybody in this forum give an idea regarding the suitable / convenient accommodation for the Parents / guardian during the reporing period (18-22 July) at NIT Trichy. Do we need to book in advance, if it is institute guest house within the campus? if so, whom to contact?
Thanks.
Hello,
Even I’m goin to join in. NIT trichy for. Arch.
When I called up the. College they said that the guest houses arenot in a good condition and they told us its better if we stay in some hotel. They also mentioned tht. The. Guest houses r being renovated.
Regarding Trichy, it is well connected from chennai by road, rail. By road, it takes 430 hrs from chennai to trichy.Regarding the hotels, there are few good hotels to stay, Hotel Sangam, Hotel Femina and Avg hotels are Abirami. From Trichy bus terminus, the college is at 15 kms for which they can take a cab who charges rs 800 -1000 for a up/down trip. Or u can take public transport which will take an hr.
Thanks
Thanks a lot Bala !
my son has got cse at mnit allahbad is it good?secondly is there any waiting list for IIIT Hyderabad as my son didnt got in firts list? Thanks
My son got CSE in MNNIT also. Where are you from? We live in Hyderabad. Please contact me at ramachandruni_s@yahoo.com if you are interested to acquaint before hand.Congrats on admsn and looking forward to hearing from you. Regards.
Both are equally good, take any one as per your convenience. Personally, prefer DTU. As we have noted earlier, the students should do their own research and get convinced themselves, rather than taking direct decisions based on views on this forum.

Dear Sir
I thank you for your support to us NRI's. I wanted to know your views on colleges like VIT and SRM. What are their ranking based on academics and placements.
Thank you sir
On their own , VIT and SRM are very good institutes with good infra and hostel facilities. Their placement records are also good. However, students choose these institutes when they cannot get anything decent in good NITs.
Hi,
My daughter has been alloted CSE in NIT Warangal.
Anyone from Chennai going to NIT Warangal?
Hello RK:
Congrats to your daughter who got into CSE in NIT Warangal. I am an alumnus of NIT Warangal and I live in the USA.
My daughter is targeting for DASA 2013-14 and interested in computer science. She just completed 11th grade in the USA. Would you mind sending your phone number to my email address rahul.bose992 DOT gmail.com so my daughter can talk to your daughter and get some inputs?
Thanks so much in advance.
Jagdish
Sorry I meant “Hello PK” as opposed to “Hello RK”
Hi Rahul,
I have replied to your email – rahul.bose992@gmail.com
Please check.
Sir
We are from Muscat and my son has been alloted NIT Surathkal. I would like to know if there is anybody else alloted NITK from Muscat.
My son has been alloted CSE in Surathkal (first list). My e-mail id is vmdhandha@yahoo.co.in. We r from Qatar
Hello All NRI's,
Let me be very clear NITs are the best and cut above all the institutions in the country. It is institutes of national importance and the only one who can compete with them in the the order is IIT, which is again working their reputation only based on PR or alumni. All NITs will clearly release a vision for 20 years with liberalfunding from very many agencies , top US and foreign univ's and HRD of india. They will also produce very larger number of Phd's Let us take cheack on NIT trichy:- It will have 10 high end interdisciplinary labs and nobody care a damn abt of UG or PG, only Phd 's hence forth. Two labs are functional. Just have a look at it and it will be just equal to glod labs of the world with initial investment of 50 crores. It will have Bramos lab developing hypersonic missiles and world best Robotics lab starting from May .2 It will have avionics, nano electronics, nano tech, energy policy ,vaules, entrepreneurship etc.. It has joint programs starting from VM ware to BHEL. All NITs:- NITs will be definitely the best university where everyone in the world will look to enter. ex:- They are going to start foundation program with top 5 0r 10 univ in UK and US. NIT trichy has joint research program with SUNY and GA tech in every thing and electronic packaging. All NITs will have only and one curriculum where MIT may envy it. Curriculum is getting designed by NIT allahabad. It will start soon medicine, law and education progrmas. Branch: It is utter stupid to think abt branch in NIT or any univ. All engg discipline is highly interdisciplinary. take automobile or Mech or electrical and physics. Absolute rot to think about brach. All NITs ,you need to do programming lab 1 and 2 which will equip in every aspect and 40% core with 60% flex where you can select any subject. For others;- Please do not compare institutes like DTU etc with NITs. IIIT H is good but no way comparable to NITs in demand for students, the future support NITs are going get from others in the world, alumni strength etc. NIT brand will hold you for life long. Remember, in 4 to 5 NITs foreign students are flocking from Ukarine, china, UK and US. Wake up guys. In next one year, all NITs will be rated over any univ. NIT rourkela is the best intitutes in research source webtornics. Don't choose anything other than NITs.
Sridhar
Dear Sridhar sir,
Can you plz tell us frm where have you collected all this info??
My son got provisional admission in nit raipur for mechanical branch . is it good college or not.? I want to know about the hostl facilities of this institution. Is there any seperate hostel for NRI students. Pls reply me.
Suja
If you have accepted the seat- it is your destiny. Or else look for a middle rung NIT I posted in one of the previous post. Please go thru the rankings of the institutes available on the blog and try to search for this institute in top 50- you would have your answer.
Dear sir,
Can anyone please reply in this regard…….
Dear Raj,
Many thanks for the valuable service you are doing for the entire NRI community. It is really appreciated.
My daughter, who is currently in Grade XI wants to do Environmental Engineering from a good college. What is your recommendation in terms of this programme offered by DTU/ NIT's or National University of Singapore. For obvious reasons I am not considering western universities but a post graduation from there would be the next step.
Thanks
Dear Sir,
I was not alloted any seat during the first three round of selection for mechanical engineering at top four colleges, and i am going to take part in the special spot round. So, can you please list out some good colleges except the top six (NITT,NITW,NITC,NITK, PEC and NIT-Allahabad). Can you please give a rank to top 10 colleges included in DASA for Mechanical engineering.
There is a separate post on rankings of engg institutes on the very blog.
Dear Sh. Raj ji,
Want to know what are career prospects overseas or esp. USA for Mech. engineers. Is Indian B.tech degree from NIT K is valid in USA for the job or one must do MS there ? similarly Indian MBA from reputed college is considered valid in USA ? Pls throw some light on this imp. topic.
Best regards
The Indian Engg degrees are valid in USA for positions that doesn’t require stamping the drgs etc (for that one needs to have PE)- however it is not easy to get non-IT jobs by having Indian degrees only (unless campus placement offered by US co.). By doing MS in US, there are additional 20,000 H1B visas for such people.
Dear Sir,
We accepted CSE at MNNIT for my son. Is he required to submit the original SAT score card at the time of reporting at the institute? Its not listed under the required documents in the provisional admission letter but my friend says it is required. Is it true? Also we need to furnish a medical certificate. Can we get it from any qualified medcial practitioner? Please help. Thanks.
Anyone who has applied this year under DASA, please chip in. Or else contact DASA authorities.
Dear Mr Raj,
I'm in a very big dilemma. My SAT score is 2400. And I want to do CSE. I got into NITK, but I declined it as I thought IIIT-H would be better than NITK, without realising that the fees is much higher. I also thought of applying to DTU but I don't know if it's better than IIIT and NITK. Well now, I have three options- DTU, IIIT-H, or NITK through spot round. May I also mention that I get a 25% off in NITK for being one of the high scores. Please please tell me what to do!
I just spoke to College Board. They say that they only send score directly to NITK. The customer care there is not aware of what a SAT SCORE CARD means
No. You dont have to give any more proof for SAT Scores. For medical certificate,
from site : "The candidates would be required to submit the Medical Certificate from the Authorised Medical Practitioner for General Fitness including a Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) free certificate from any of the reputed clinical laboratories in their home country or India. Alternatively, the candidates would be required to undergo a Medical Fitness Test at the time of reporting at concerned Institute."
if any of ur relative/friend is a doc, tell him to make a medical certificate for you with his seal and medical practice number.
if u dont, go to a hospital and say u need a medical certificate for college purpose and they will test you and issue a certificate.
dont forgot to mention the HIV thing. its not standard, so you ll have to mention it..
Thanks to both Gafur and Awijit for replying. So we can either get it done locally at our place or get it done by the doctor at MNNIT, right? I wish we had a standard format available for the medical fitness certificate. I am hoping the doctors would know what all needs to be tested and reported. If someone has one kindly pass on for the benefit of others. Thanks and regards.
Greetings
I send a mail to DASA regarding your query. They say no SAT score card is required at the time of admission
Thank you Kailash for your reply.Nice to see all trying to help each other.
Do you have a sample medical certificate? There is none on MNNIT site. Or you think the doctors will know what to write. Is it better to get it done at MNNIT?Thank you.
For all PEC alloted candidates under DASA please see the link below for details of admission

Dear sir,
Please can you ellaborate about what are the good branches in DTU because many say that MECHANICAL is the only good branch in DTU….Is this true because I want my daughter to join the ECE or CompSci branch.Plz ellaborate.
Best Regards
Please get convinced yourself before choosing anything. I respect people’s opinion as everyone is entitled for one.
In my personal opinion, both computers and electronics are good branches in DTU; they are comparable to the best NITs. However, Mechanical of DTU is beyond comparison with any of the NIT as it is simply superb. A lot of high profile projects get done in DTU Mechanical, however not everyone gets a chance to involve in those high profile team as the selection of the teams is rigorous. A superb branch in the institute doesn’t mean other branches are any inferior to best NITs. Those who want to do CSE will not touch Mechanical at any cost, even if it is the best branch in India (no disrespect to mech as I myself am a mech engr and love the branch).
Sir,
I got Instrumentation and Control Engg in NIT-Trichy which was my 4th choice…I do realize its a decent branch but I've not heard much about it…Can you shed some information about this course??
Thanx
It’s a decent branch. It has good demand in process plants (like refineries), power plant, metal smeltors.
Hello Mr. Tyagi and all 2nd/3rd/4th years students’ parents:
I have seen lot of interest in the DASA by NRIs and the students from outside-India and I am also planning to admit my daughter in 2013-14. Could you please answer the following questions?
1) If you are living in the USA, are you getting any tax benefits (deductions/credits) for kids eduction in India when filing the IRS taxes? I know that you can get up to 2500 USD credit/year for 4 years of the kid studies in the colleges qualified by US dept education for tax deductions purposes. There are other benefits of using 529 or pre-tax dollars in the US. Seems like no college in India is qualified by US dept education for tax deductions purposes.
1a) In state tuition fee is about 10k per year in the US. This is almost matching with the fee in India after deducting the US tax benefits ( deductions/credits). Am I missing anything?
2) I heard that France, some European countries, Singapore and Mexico are less expensive for the college education. Did you explore these options? Do you feel that the cost would be less in India when we compare to college education in the countries listed in #2.

3) What is the main reason to go for DASA admissions?
a) Cost of education/boarding/Hostel
b) Quality education in India
c) Campus placement/plenty of job opportunities
d) Social reasons
e) Parents want to settle in India in the coming years
f) Loving the home country ( Yes, I do)
Mr Tyagi, could you please add the last question as poll so we can get
4) How are the students feeling in the colleges in India after studying 10+2 in other countries?
Thanks in advance.
Dear Tyagi Ji,
Namaskar
In the ranking of top engineering colleges in India (year 2012), some of the agencies are placing IIIT Allahabad higher than MNNIT-A. Is it true? If yes, then your valued comments please on the possible reasons. My son would be applying through DASA in 2013 (if scheme continues) and your guidance would grately help him in filling choices.
If you visit UAE, we would like to offer our hospitality to you.
Thanks,
SP Singh
Singh Ji, Namaskar! The rating agencies blow hot and cold on some of the new institutes like, IIIT-Hyd and IIIT-Alllahabad. In one particular year, IIIT-hyd would be listed as one of top 10 (including IIT system) and next year in the high teens. However, the trick is to follow these institutes over the years in newspapers and the news on their websites. Like a team from IIIT-hyd recently won a top 20 place in coding worldwide, check in which all companies their students are doing 3rd year internship (Google, Facebook USA), follow news of their annual fests. The best thing about these two institutes is that they are research-centric. By that token, the interested group of students are exposed to research level subjects during UG.In years to come, IIIT-Hyd would give tough competition to IITs in CSE branch and IIIT-Allahabad in ECE branch. These institutes would have to sustain their performances for next 5-6 years to really see if they can keep the momentum. As for your hospitality in UAE, thanks a lot for your feelings. I would be visiting UAE next week for some official work and the program is quite tight already- can certainly meet sometime later.
I am asked to submit a medical fitness certificate + HIV free certificate at the time of reporting at MNNIT. Is there a format for this and where is it available? Should I go only to a govt doctor? Can I get it from the doctor at the MNNIT in-house doctor? Please advise. Thanks.
sir can i get into DTU, any branch, for a sat score of 1250 in math and phy ?
Unlikely.
Dear Sir,
Thanks a lot , you are doing a wonderful job for expatriate community. I have seen people are referring SAT -2 maths and physics scores some times not chemistry. Why is it so? Is there any criteria and consdieration by DASA for only physics/maths. My son is in 11th std and wish to know more about this..
The DASA scheme for NITs/PEC/IIIT requires SAT-2 scores in PCM. However, DTU only requires SAT 2 scores in maths and physics.
Dear Sir,
I have a SAT score of 1780.Do I have any chance of getting Civil in NIT Calicut or Trichy in the special spot round? Also where will the special spot roung take place? Will it be held in each institution or alltogether in one instituition?
Dear sir,
My daughter has got an allotment for MNNIT ,allahabad -ECE (our preferred branch) with a SAT score of 2110,phy n maths:1400.Could you please advise me whther i should take part in spot round considering the 20 seats that would be left vacant of NITK after students choose IIIT-H.Would it be advisable and good to take part in spot round, what are the chances of getting ur preferred seat,as i don't want my daughter to lose her current allotment as well as not gain anything in spot round. Also what are her chances of getiing DTU?I would like students of parents who scored 2400 to also advise on when would they be dropping the DASA seat if their kids get into IIIT-H.
Dear sir,
I would also appreciate it if you could give me details of last year's spot round………..
I am afraid that you would not get any past year’s info in spot round as seats used to be taken across the table.
Hi! I'm a student. I got a score of 2400, and I'm interested in CSE too. I got into NITK, but I declined the seat, as I was looking for admission in either IIIT-H or DTU. Could you please tell me which one is better for CSE….IIIT-H or DTU? Or have I made a mistake by declining NITK?
For CSE, IIIT-hyd is the best. Period.
If you can get a CSE seat in either IIIT-hyd or DTU, you have not made the mistake.
what is the scope for biotech in the future in comparision with IT or computer science ??
I personally do not want to comment on Biotech as I don't like this branch to be done in India.
Sir
Can u please describe to me how nit kurukshetra is?? I have accepted this seat so I just wanna know more about it from your point if view!!
Thanks
Jai
Before I answer, let me share that NIT-Kuru is my home state NIT (I am based at Gurgaon when in India).
Now NITs are classified in 3 groups
1) Top ones; competing well with new IITs: T, W, K and MNNIT
2) Middle ones, better than the rest: Calicut, Jaipur, Kuru, Jaipur, Bhopal, Durgapur, Nagpur, Surat and Rourkela
3) Rest of 60% NITs
If you try to find out the AIEEE 2011 college wise cut-off rankings for NITs (google it) and you will find out that it is decently placed in middle group.
