DASA scheme for the year 2013-14 is expected to be announced later this month. In the meantime, the below info on DASA Scheme for NRI's/PIO's would be useful.
Update 30 May 2012
I request the blog readers to share their views if this post helped them personally in taking a decision. Obviously, I would be open to criticism if the expected cut-off are missing the bulls-eye by a big margin (>80-100 points for top 5 colleges). However, it is quite possible that the cut-off could be much higher going by the solid response to the scheme this year. Keeping the fingers crossed.
All the very best to all DASA Scheme applicants. Good Luck.

My son with 1970 score got IIIT , Allahabad . I would like to try DTU as an option, though I am happy with IIIT . I just want to take a chance . I could see that very few opted for IIIT , Allahabad though it is one of the top ten colleges in EC and IT. Others are requested to consider this option . What is your suggestion
Top 4-5 NITs > iiit-a: Everyone comes to know which colleges the top rankers go in AIEEE exam. IIIT-A is a coming up nicely- so future prospects should be good.
Hello sir,
the 1st list of dasa has been announced but i havnt been alloted anything..
i applied for CSE in NIT WARANGAL, SURATHKAL and TRICHY and my sat score is 2070..
the cutoff for nit warangal this time is 2210 ( last year it was 2010)..
are there any chances of me getting any among the three in 2nd round??
plz reply soon..
thanks..
The process of sliding would happen when higher ranked candidates do not accept the given seats (some of them may get into IIT/DTU/IIIT-H/Ioverseas colleges). Moreover it also depends on how many candidates are interested to upgrade for the same seats. Clearly it is a very dynamic process and difficult to predict with any accuracy. My wild guess would be that sliding of top branches/colleges may go go down by 20-50 points for top 4-5 colleges/branches. You can get good opportunity in spot round in other NITs (other than top 5 DASA colleges).
sir, i have been alloted my 3rd choice MNNIT in CSE with sat 2040 and i have opted for upgrade in a hope of NITW. and will this make me lose MNNIT if further not alloted.
Since upgrade is a facility by DASA, so you won’t lose current seat by applying for upgrade. W looks remote. If you have learnt to live with basic infra, MNNIT is one of the best for CSE amongst all NITs (personally MNNIT-CSE is best amongst ALL NITs but the place doesn’t rock as much)
Thanks for the great job you are doing.
With 2350 i got EEE NITK which is my second choice. I have give for upgradation to ECE NITK.
What are my chances considering the 2400s who will get DTU or IIITH?
dear raj,
i had choosed 4 choices but i didnt get any one of them but i m in the merit list my score is 1920. is there any chance i get mnnit-a? cant i add more colleges for 2nd allotment?
Dear Raj sir,
My son has got CIVIL ENGG in NIT Trichy ( his 3 choice) His SAT score was 1840. We are all very happy!! We would like to thank you for helping us decide the " college- branch" choice which is so vital. Thanks a lot and you will be always remembered in our prayers!
Dear Raj Sir,
Your blog was very helpful in following each and every stages of DASA process. I really appreciate and admire you for your wonderful venture and services to the NRI community.
My son has been selected for Mechanical Eng in Nagpur which was our last choice. we have given to upgrade to our first choice which is Calicut. His sat score was 1890. what are the chances? Most prorably my son will not go to Nagpur. In that case will I lose 50% of the amount I paid? your valuable advise is highly appreciated
thanks Nazer
The demand for Calicut has been strong this year. I presume you are looking for mech in Calicut- in that case the chances are not looking good in upgrade.
To those all who have not got a seat of their liking and thinking about admission to private colleges, I would like to remind that it is best to do engg from top 25 colleges (most NITs are top ranked) in India as the candidates would remain in top league.
DASA 2012 – FIRST LIST OF ALLOTMENT ANNOUNCED
______________________________________________
Dear Raj,
Today, the 31st May, evening, DASA first list of branch/school allotment is announced.
My son, with a SAT score of 2370, got selected for his 1st choice branch (ECE) at NIT Surathkal. We are extremely happy for him and the end outcome.
For more than a year, we have been serious followers of your website and this great user community. It helped us to know/learn many things on these selection process/priorities, narrow down our options and reach a goal of my son's interest.
We would like to convey our sincere thanks to you and this user community. We wish good luck to all the students/their parents of this great website.
Cheers!!!
Mohan
Congratulations! Generally, the cut-off scores are higher this year. My prediction was 2350 for ECE in NIT-K, which was not really very far-off from 2370 actual. It is good to know that the info helped you to some extent.
Thanks dear.
Dear Sir,
Does the DASA scheme allow us to change our course and college choices once the first merit list is out??
NO.
Dear Sir,
Pl advise if after completing 12th from Gulf Country , my father loose NRI status , am I still eligible for admission through DASA scheme? pl guide
AG
Yes, would be eligible.
Unlike previous years, response to DASA is tremendous this time (as you have commented also). Is there any specific reason behind it?
Further, I think Trichy may be at par (if not surpass) with Surathkal as far as cut off is concerned.
Let's wait for the 'Big Day' tomorrow.
The reason for lukewarm response last year was due to minimum SAT2 score requirement of 1800, which was reduced to 1440 after 1st list. By that time most of the candidates with SAT2 score <1800 had arranged alternative private admissions. So we can presume that response of students with <1800 would be very good this time. Keeping my fingers crossed. All the best to all the applicants.
Sir,
As mentioned on the website of DTU we are elgible to file under NRI only if you have stayed in India for less then 730 days, I am a bit confused if I am eligible to file or not. As 7 years period is from 2005-2012, I have stayed out of India for 4 years and 11 months, would I be elgible as I have stayed in India for 760 days and out of 7 years I have been outside India for 4 years and 11 months.
Technically, you have stayed in India longer than what is allowed.
However, since you are short by only about a month for staying abroad, I suggest you get in touch with the concerned authorities.
Generally, north Indians prefer DTU and if do not get admission, look towards 3 south Indian NITs. I feel these 4 colleges are at par. You would be eligible.
What is DTU?
My Daughter is completing X std this year? She has been studying in USA since Kinder Gaden.
We are looking college admission in India preferably Trichy. She is preparing SAT2 exams.
I was wondering, bringing her to do XI and XII in India would make wider choices? Please give your comment.
Thanks.
Sundar.
DTU: Delhi Technological Univ (previouslY DCE).
If you are the holder of US passport, coming to India might help to widen the scope. If an NRI, need to re-consider as you would not be eligible for DASA when studying 11/12 in India.
Hi
Thanks for your response. We are US passport holder. We have decided to continue in US her 11trh and 12th and watching your responses and preparing for DASA IIIT-H or DU.
Thanks.
Sundar.
Hello
I am from Bahrain and My daughter got 97% marks from here on CBSE 12th in 2012. We are planning to apply for her under DASA scheme for the year 2013-14 after improving her SAT scores.
Is it possible for her to apply admission to NITs for 2013-14 under DASA scheme?
Dear Ashokan,
Mabrook for fantastic performance by your daughter who topped in Bahrain (based in Bahrain, I too feel proud about the performance). As per the current DASA rules, it is possible to take admission under DASA after dropping a year. However, no one can guarantee the continuity of DASA scheme or the criteria adopted for admission next year. If you can get a decent branch in a top 5-6 college this year, go for it. However, if your plans include taking a shot at IIT-JEE/AIEEE next year, that could sound a reasonable move.
Hello,
Many thanks for every thing you do for we NRIs. Considering all the aspects, how do you compare IIIT Allahabad, NIT Jaipur and NIT Kurukshetra with each other?
Kind regards
MNNIT>IIIT-A>Jai>Kuru
Sir,
I have studied outside India for a period of 3 years continuosly, i.e. 10th, 11th and 12th. I have been outside for a period of 31July 2009 to Present, will I be elgible for DTU NRI Status. I would really appreciate your help as the guidelines provided by DTU are confusing.
Anothe question as I will be filing forms on NRI basis, does that means I will not be eligible for Online counselling process of DTU which starts from 15th of Jue.
Thanks for all your help, it has been very useful
For DTU, the residency requirement is 5 years in last 7 years. So would not be eligible.
With above in mind, you can participate in Online counselling.
Dear Sir,
Is it possible to change the course and institute preferences once the first merit list is out?
Dear Mr. Raj,
First of all, thank you very much for providing valuable information to all NRI parents and students. This is remarkable work for Indian community and we appreciate it. We are in Qatar and my son got 2370 in SAT subject test in May 2012 exam. His liking is CSE branch. Kindly give your opinion for NITK, NITT, NITW, PEC if we consider two factors: Faculty + subject exposure and future prospect for further study (anywhere).
Once again thank you for your efforts.
Vijay
I think NIT-W & T are very good for faculty +subject exposure in CSE. For further studies, all 4 you listed (in addition- MNNIT) have very good track record. However, college is only a certain part of whole process to get admission for a MS degree, the more important things are academic record of the students,GRE scores and subjective criterias by various institutes.
Dear Raj Ji,
We are very thankfull to you for your constant dedication to the cause of the NRIs. My son just finished his grade 12 with 98% and scored a 2200 on the SAT-II. He would like to to attend either NIT- Trichy, NIT – Surathkal, NIT – Warangal, MNNIT-Allahabad or PEC Chandigarh for Computer Science. His first choice is NIT- Trichy due to their stellar academics. Will he get his first choice?
Thank you.
First thing first- Congratulations, mabrook and badhaiyyan for your son getting awesome 98%. This is a fantastic effort by our NRI community. My best wishes to all who have done extremely well and hope that a CBSE topper would be a NRI in near future (who thought before that ICSE topper would be from UAE this year 2012)
There is good chance that your son would get Trichy, however, one never knows towards which branch the demand would be more this year. There is good likelihood to get other institutes except K.
Sir,
My final SAT score for PCM is 2160, is there any chance of my getting CSE at PEC, Chandigarh. Sir which is next best NIT for CSE in Northern India after PEC ? Sir, kindly also advise me on NIT, Kurukshetra.
Regards,
Nikhil
To get PEC, you would need a bit of luck. MNNIT is next best option for you (provided you can cope-up with living in Allahabad).
Dear Sir, My son scored 1890 in SAT and 87% in XII (phsics 92, Maths 90 and Chemistry 85. What are the chances of getting in NIT Calicut for Mechanical? we have also selected, Warangal, Trichy, Surathkal and Nagpur. Do we have to go for a second option ? kindly advise
Get ready to study in Nagpur.
The residence condition in DTU is not straight forward. I may help if you could share your specific case.
Thanks for your reply!
My son has studied in Class 8th, 11th and 12th from abroad. Thus, he has stayed for three academic years within the period from 1.4.2007 till 31.03.2012. He has stayed physically for a period of more than 730 days during these three years.
The question is whether he is eligible under DTU rules?
DTU residence rules are as following
1. If he/she has not been resident in India in nine out of ten preceding years; or
2. If he/she has not been in India for a period of 730 days or more during the
preceding seven years.
As per above criteria, you would not be eligible for DTU
Sir, I have got 2250 sat score. what are my chances in NIT Suratkhal, Trichy and Calicut mechanical branch??
Mech in T is possible and Calicut is for sure.
I have sent my previous December score, but I only sent the scores of improved subjects now (Math and Physics). In this case, will they only select my best scores i.e with my previous Chemistry score?
Yes, the best scores (subject-wise) would be considered.
Dear Raj Sir,
My final scores are 2050. I applied for both CSE and ECE in top 5 colleges (NITK, T, W, C, MNNIT) + IT at NITK. Total 11 choices. What are my chances of getting a seat?
I am suddenly getting worried because there has been lot of inflow of new registrations on DASA site in the last 3 days. They had also extended the dead line by a day upto 26th and the no. of appls crossed 2670. Why is there lot of interest this year, is it because the cut off reduced to 1440 or no. of years reduced from 3 to 2 for NRIs?
In this scenario, is your expected cut-off list still good?
Should I have opted for more colleges? Now since I cannot do anything abt it, should I have a plan B in place just in case I do not get a seat in the first list out of my choices?
Your response is eagerly awaited and greatly valued.
Best Regards,
Sameer
You would most likely get in C or MNNIT. If not you can try your luck in 2nd list by giving more choices.
No need to worry though.
Dear Sir,
thanks for your great noble service. My son has scored 2100 in SAT2 . very particular about CSE Only. Opted for CSE in NITT and NITC only. Didn't get any allotment in the second list also. Is there a way to add more options now before the third list? He may get IT in Madras Institute of Technology , Chennai under Anna University NRI counselling which would be on 22/06/12. Please advise if IT in MIT, Anna or NITC would be better or CSE in any other reputed private college in Chennai would be better.
Thanks in advance
You cannot add more options any more (can do so AFTER 3rd round i.e. before spot round). I wish I had more knowledge about MIT, so can’t help you there.
Are the requirements going to.be same next year for nri students.
I am currently in uk doing my a-levels and i will be expecting my results by the end of august 2013. So am i going to follow the same procedures or will it be different??
Please respond ASAP.
Regards
Nikhil
God-willing, the scheme would be continued and the same procedure is expected to be followed.
My son has completed Mechanical Engineering in 2012 from US. I am back to India and he is also coming back to India. I have two questions – As most of the placements are through campus interview, how can he apply for job and secondly, can he apply for PG courses through DASA and if yes what specialization do you think is better in Indian job market?
Thanks!!
Frankly, the best jobs in India are given out during campus and non-campus jobs for fresh graduates are not so much visible if degree is done abroad. You would have to look out for walk-in-interviews or register thru job portals.
PG seats are available for NRI candidates in most institutes that offer DASA seats.
If that is the case why do so many Indians send every year their kids for bachelors degree (BS) courses. I do not think all go for MS next and even if MS, what next? Job situation is really bad in US. What do these returning Indians do in India? No jobs even in India as most of the jobs are offered through campus interview.
Any thoughts?
Yes it is true that the best of jobs are given by the best companies in campuses of about top 25 institutes of India.
Dear Mr. Tyagi,
I have been following your blog comments since its inception. Frankly speaking, you are providing a yeoman service to the NRI community.
I have a question (little different in nature) which has put me in little dilemma. I seek your guidance in this regard:
– Till 18th May, I was concentrating on the admission formalities through DASA quota for my son in Mech. NIT-K with a SAT score of 2320 (may improve a little), so please first comment how feasible it is.
– Now (after 18th), a new situation has emerged. My son somehow qualified in the IIT JEE (although, with a SC rank 0f 3063 without any coaching etc.). I know he will not be able to get a good / old IIT / depttt. with this kind of poor rank. However, online course choice fill option has been provided to him. I am really confused as to what should be the correct action. I am not much interested in participating in counselling / course choice filling as it may lead to acceptance of an undesirable discipline and subsequently robbing him of a chance to try next year. What is your opinion?
I have already completed the DASA application process with the requisite fees and awaiting result (although loss of money does not matter much here in comparison to the best career choice).
I am sure you can provide your frank / valuable comments in this situation which will help me in taking a good decision.
Thanks & regards.
Rahul
Thanks for your comments.
1) Your scores are very good, however, it may be touch and go case for Mech in K.
2) Congratulations for cracking IIT JEE. I would suggest not to participate in the councelling since you won’t get anything good/decent/OK/not-ok branch. However, if I were in your place, I would send the kid to Kota and easily expect and motivate him enough to come within a rank of 250 in your category. His SAT 2 scores are good and bright future awaits him next year.
Thanks for your time for asking the questions that could help most DASA applicants 1) If cost of the study is the key criteria, the best thing is to get an IIT/NIT seat thru JEE/AIEEE. This could be followed-up by other institutes for NRI'S like DCE, COEP, HBTI etc. If quality is the criteria, then easiest way is to find out the AIEEE OPENING/closing cut-off rankings for each institute, find out the placement salaries for each institute, calculate ROI for a career spanning some decent years and consider actual value given by by the institute to the student (and not value added by the students to the institute). Different people give different importance to quality and that's why a lot of made-in-China is also sold in the market. 2) For CSE: IIIT-Hyd. For ECE, top 3 NITs are better 3) None for your score..
Dear Raj,
The registration have crossed 2400 . Is it very high compared to last years?. I could see only 500 applicants after the third round in 2011. I am worried whether there is exodus of application this year . My son got 1770 for the first SAT test and is awaitng result of 5th May SAT and looking forward for admission in K, T or W in ECE, EE or Chemical branches
Last year due to sharp fee hike, the total applications could only fill about half the seats. This year the competition is expected to be stiffer. In you case, I would suggest to look for other NITs as well.
My son is interested in Elecronics and communiation at NITJalandhar.
Please could you let us know the minimum sat scores are required for the the admission.
Not much demand under DASA scheme. The minm score needed under DASA(1440) would be fine. However, I suggest to consider PEC or Kuru
Hi Raj,
I checked out your expected cut offs for DASA 2012. How could u predict this? And by approx how much does it go down in 2nd and 3rd rounds?
The expected cut-off is based on last year’s cut-off plus guesswork considering stiffer competition this year (by the way cut-off scores have been going higher only every year. By the third list the scores could slide between 20-100 based on dynamics of each year. However, I do not see ECE/CSE/Mech in NITK sliding even by 50 points by the 3rd list.
Please note that most Indian candidates go to NUS when they can’t get a decent branch in IITs/top NITs. This is not to demean the high ranking of NUS, just a fact in Indian context. For me, IIIT-H is best outside IIT system.
Dear sir,
What is the future scope in IT (what be can be done after graduation)?
I want to MBA or masters(MS) after graduation, so, should I place IT over ECE?
A quick response will be highly appreciated in these late days. Keep up your good work!!!
The prospective employers always look for the better candidates. Obviously the ECE branch candidates would have ranked higher than IT candidates in any admission criteria.
Would you kindly tell me the cut-off for architecture in calicut and trichy ?
I have now posted expected cut-off marks at below link

Please refer below link for the expected cut-off marks

My child has secured 2060 in SAT 2 . Will she be eligible for Computer Engineering in NIT Durgapur or NIT Trichy
Can get in NIT-D, difficult for T
sir,
congratz for the amazing response you are receiving to this Blog.
It is a great service as tremendous doubts always surround DASA admission process.
Sir, my concern is that… i have already scored 2280 in PCM for SAT II , and i have written SAT for may also. The results of may SAT comes on May24. Sir, i have oredred for the scores to be sent to NIT-K but i am doubtfull whter the scores will reach before the cut-off of 29th may. please give me an assurance regarding how and when are scores to be sent. because i dont want to loose my chance for admissions to NIT.
Thanks a million, in advance.
Tc.!! 🙂
Do not worry much, DASA itself have noted that candidates can give SAT2 exam upto May.
Dear Raj
I am awaiting my SAT 2 reults this May. Now am filling my form. Had a question, on most sites they say that Warangal and Trichy are better than Surathkal while Acc to DASA cut offs etc they say Surathkal is more preferred. Can you please advise on basis of Placements, facilities, infrastructure and quality of edu. Please reply ASAP
Regards
Sam
In nutshell: The preferencess of AIEEE candidates are different from DASA scheme candidates.
Respected Sir,
I applied for dasa recently.
i have two doubts,
1. I appeared for the sat test in two sittings; in the first i gave chem and in the second i appeared for physics and chem. Hence i have two registration numbers. I should submit "both" to dasa right?
2. While sending hard copies, i wont be having my 12th marksheet. There wont be no issue right? i WILL OF COURSE SUBMIT MY 12TH MARKSHEET DURING ADMISSION
1) Yes, send both scores of different dates
2) No probs, most candidates would be in the same boat.
Dear Mr. Raj,
Thanks for the bold advices. Great job! My daughter expects 1900 to 2000 inSAT-2 of 5 May-2012. Does she stand a chance for Civil or Chemical in NIT-Calicut? Any Chance there for Civil if she gets only 1800 – Valsaraj
With 2000, good chance for civil. With 1800, I suggest pick up a good branch than picking up a good college.
Raj Sir,
With a SATII score of 1990 can we apply for CSE in NITK/NITT/NITW/MNNIT/NITC?
Should we also add more colleges ? If yes, what are the next best colleges?
Srinivas
Good chance to get MNNIT- which is very good for CSE. Other choices are Jaipur, Rourkela, Surat and Kuru
Dear Sir,
Is 92% in +2 a good score for SPDC aid ? Do you know what were the cut-off scores in the past years?
Regards,
Srinivas
I remember 94%+ were good scores for SPDC, however you may try your luck.
hey i gt 2170 nd m applying fr ece mechanical and eee in nit surathkal trichy and calicut..! do u think i wil get into any of these college wid these marks or shud i put more colleges??
You may get in NIT-T and C.
Hi Raj,
My son has 2300 score in SAT II and what are his chances for 1) ECE in NIT T, K 2) EEE in NIT T, K.
with 2300, ECE in T is possible and EEE in any institute.
Sir, with a score of 1800, can I get Civil in NITC, NITW, NITT?
Civil in C and W possible with a bit of luck (pray others don’t grab it before your turn comes up)
Your scores are good. IIIT-H has published notice on NRI seats while DTU has not done it so far. So that leaves you with IIIT-H only.
You would need to assess how much risk you could take, both in terms of loss of one year and loss of $3500. Personally I would buy peace of mind by using my earnings (unless of course the $ outgo would strip my sleep more than loss of 1 year of career).
Dear Sir,
My daughter has scored 2350 in SAT 2. She is interested in taking either Chemical Engineering from NITK or EEC/CSE from PEC Chandigarh. Between these three options (Chemical/EEC/CSE) which one should be preferred taking into account the institute ranking, infrastructure facilities as well as future career prospects and job opportunities.
Thanks………………
Personally, first choose a branch and then select 4-5 institutes to get it.
I am an NRI from Dubai and I have scored 2150 in SAT held in November 2011. My IIT scores are not impressive . Under DASA what are my chances of getting in Electrical and Electronics Engg in NIT – Suratkal or in the second best Institution. Pls guide. Going through the website of DASA , all score card are sent by College Board to NIT- Suratkar , based on my request on MY SAT . Is there need to ask the College Board to send me Score Card – Physical ( not in electronic form). The reason for my question is that in case i opt for any other institution that institution can ask for a Physical Score Card duly attested by College Board. Please throw some light on this . How much time does it normally takes for the score card to reach the recipient in Mumbai or Dubai. How do you rate MANIPA L University as they are also providing admissions to NRI students. Although the fees structure of both are too steep and needs to be reconsidered. Pls enlighten me. Thanks B/Rgds – Rohan
EEE in K with your score is unlikely. I have already listed top DASA institutes in the main article.
If you can get a seat in one of top 5-7 colleges in DASA, don’t even look at Manipal.
Sir,my sat score is 2180. ideally, how many preferences for colleges should i fill in the option list? is it fyn if i only fill NIT – suratkhal, NIT – calicut, and NIT trichi?
You may get your choice in NIT-C. However, I would have added a couple of more NITs, just to be on safe side.
Sir please tell me about spot admission.. is there any chance of getting in through spot admission ?
You can get what you want in spot admissions except for top 7-8 colleges and top branches.
What is the cut off for getting into IIIT-H? I got 2250 in SAT II. Do I have a chance of getting a seat in CSE?
Your scores are good, however IIIT-H doesn’t publish any data. The admission process also includes interview, so cannot say with certainty about outcome.
