DASA/NRI Engg admissions- Discussion
Update: 2 July 2011
The minimum SAT2 score requirement of 1800 could be relaxed to 1440 during spot admission. Those applicants who have taken admissions in private colleges due to minm SAT2 score requirement have a big opportunity to get admissions to NITs as NIT brand is highly recognised in India and abroad.
Update: 1 July 2011
DASA-2011 1st Merit List has been declared today. Hearty Congratulations to all those who got their preferred branch and the college :).
Please find below the list
Following is the actual SAT2 Cut-off for various branches and colleges
DASA-Cut-off-College-Branch-actual
The key highlights of DASA scheme merit list year are
1) Mechanical branch was the most popular branch going by the cut-offs, followed by ECE and CSE. Out of top 100 applicants, 33 opted for Mechanical, 21 for ECE and 25 for Computers.
2) NITK was the most popular college. Following is the number of DASA scheme toppers selecting this institute:8 out of 10, 15 out of 20, 34 out of 50 and 58 out of first 100 toppers selecting NITK.
3) NITK (58 out of top 100) was followed up by NIT-Trichy (18 toppers out of 100), NIT-W (8 out of 100) and PEC & NIT-C getting 7 toppers each out of 100 toppers. We have been consistent in giving this ranking on this blog. Last year (2010), the break of college-wise preference of top 100 applicants was as following: NITK (37), NIT-T: 23, NIT-W:14, NIT-C: 10 and PEC:9.
Leaving aside cut-off scores, following is the break-up of applicants for DASA2011: NITK: 90 applicants, NIT-T:75, NIT-C: 65, NITW:62, PEC: 40, MNNIT-Allahabad: 31, SVNIT-Surat:23, MNIT-Jaipur: 20, VNIT-Nagpur: 15 applicants.
4) Due to steep fee hike in DASA scheme, less applicants have selected DASA scheme this year, many opting for other govt/private colleges. This is evident by number of students opting for DASA scheme has come down by about 15% in the category of those getting more than 1800 SAT2 score as compared to last year.
My apologies to all those parents/students whose querries I could not respond in last week due to minor injury I had on my wrist.

Update: 23 Nov 2010
I have been receiving quite a few queries on how to improve the SAT2 scores (some candidates have taken 1st SAT 2 attempt in Oct/Nov and are not quite satisfied with their efforts). The general thread of the queries is that the candidates are getting about 700 scores (out of 800) in the subject and how to improve the score by about 50 points in each subject so that the total SAT 2 score can reach to around 2250 from 2100. In fact, this jump in scores can dramatically improve the college/branch one can get.
Before I start with any other advice on the subject- I would say there is no short cut or substitute to hard work and well rounded preparation. Having said that, there is always scope for smart strategies that are used by corporates to focus on the big picture. So following should help students as well:
1) Follow Rule of 80:20 (Parato Principle): The Pareto principle, the law of the vital few states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Therefore, 20% people/countries own 80% of world’s wealth (think of G20 countries having 84% of world GDP). 20% of components in a car are responsible for 80% of cars stuck on the road (ever wondered they are the same culprits: battery, empty tank, tyre, spark plug and radiator water), 20% students of any school/college are responsible for 80% of the problems 🙂 .
To cut the long story short, 20% of the weak areas on the given subject are responsible for 80% of the incorrect answers- so find out those 20% problematic areas and you can eliminate 80% of errors. These 20% weak areas could be related to subject theory, silly calculation mistakes, not reading the question correctly and what is being asked etc-etc. I have learnt the hard way during my certification days (Sun Java, PMP, Value Engg and others) that most mistakes for me were not related to lack of technical knowledge but related to not understanding the question itself-as to what is actually being asked in the question. So grab some sets of SAT 2 Mock Tests, solve one set of mock tests-identify your weak areas (many SAT 2 books/mock tests are available in the market and online). First, list down the weak areas and improve those areas before attempting any more mock tests. Then grab another set of SAT 2 mock tests, and apply new understanding and learning. Just follow the iteration a couple of times and believe me you can improve your scores dramatically by studying smartly, efficiently and in shortest possible time (by just concentrating on 20% weak area)
2) Just follow my another article on How to Solve MCQ Questions (the article has been published in many magazines.) Since SAT 2 is a multiple choice exam, below link should also help greatly
http://nrispeaks.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/multiple-choice-question-mcq-exams-how-to-crack-them/
Update:16 Oct 2010
The key changes being 1) Minimum SAT2 score of 1800 2) NIT-K having obtained a code number from Collegeboard for automatic SAT 2 score submissions, 3) Fee is proposed to be increased to $7000 (from $4000 earlier), subject to approval from ministry.
Update: 12 July 2010
Finally, DASA merit list has been published. We wish all the best to the blog visitors and wish them a great career. Live and enjoy each day of your college life butdon’t ignore your studies. DASA candidates need to put that extra effort to sail thru the studies as compared to AIEEE candidates.
We are in the process of collecting some useful ebooks and question bank for 1st semestercandidates to help them keep track of their studies and not lose sight of it.We would provide the link of the study material within one week to all blog readers as complimenray gift for visiting this board and helping each other. There is no need to provide your SAT2 scores as same has been noted in the merit list.

Choosing Between Electronics and Computers Branches
1) College Preference by NRIs
Question: Should I choose Engg Branch vs. Top College
Answer: Select the best college for your rank- but dont compromise on your branch. The best way is to first choose your preferred branch in top 30-40 colleges. If the rank is not good, try to get your second best branch selection in top 30-40 colleges. Try not to do engg from a college not in top 50 engg colleges of India. Preferably, select a college not by its location/metro but the overall rank of the college.
Following is a list of NITs most preffered by NRIs (in descending order of competition) during 2009. Please note that this list is skewed heavily towards south India NITs (for e.g .NIT-Calicut is preferred over NIT Warangalbecause of regional background of applicants)
1) NIT Surathkal
2) NIT Trichy
3) NIT Calicut
4) NIT Warangal
5) PEC Chandigarh
6) MNNIT Allahabad
Following NITs also see some demand from NRIs(but notsimilar heavy demand as for above listed colleges-it doesnt mean they are inferior in any respect)
7) MNIT-Jaipur/IIIT- Allah/NIT-Kuru/ NIT-Bhopal/NIT-Nagpur/NIT-Rourkela
Additionally, following are the ranking of Indian Engg Institutes
India Today Ranking of Top 25 Engg Institutes

Private Colleges
1) PSG College of Technology Coimbatore
2) Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
3) Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology Patiala
4) Vellore Institute of Technology Vellore
5) RV College of Engineering Bangalore
6) Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Infocom Technology Ghadhinagar
7) Manipal Institute of Technology Manipal
2) Branch Preference
Question: What branch is best?
Answer: Normally people choose branches based on their ‘scope’ (i.e. career potential) rather than their interests. However, there is there is no one in this world who can predict which branch will be best employable four years down the lane. There is simply no way you can predict that. So what is the solution? Go by your gut feeling. There is nothing called a good branch and nothing called a bad branch. A good guy in a bad branch is much more employable than a bad guy in a (so called) good branch. If you have the love towards a subject, then go for it. If you dont know your interests, one can follow the rat race by following in the footsteps of last years branch preferences by successful candidates. In the end, one can achieve anything in spite/irrespective of his educational background
(Please refer below link to understand how AIEEE candidates selected their colleges and branches. The College selection by NRIs have been slightly different from AIEEE candidates as listed above but branch selection by NRIs has been in tune with AIEEE candidates.)

3) Pay Packages for branches

However, if someone plans to lookout for jobs in US, following link provides the highest starting salaries based on the degrees. Without doubt 8 of 10 top degrees are Engg and Chemical is high flying branch (though aerospace is listed top branch, but I understand there are some restrictions for non-US citizens for the branch. Similarly, Petroleum Engg, was considered best branch with a starting salary of $85K in a separate survey)

Regarding SAT II scores for DASA admissions, there is no precedence for admissions to NITs with SAT II scores and therefore, it would not be easy to know where one stands in the crowd. Boarders can certainly share their SAT II scores (alongwith CBSE XII PCM %) to gauge water. By the way, one can submit the best subject scores from 2 dates if giving exams on both 1 May and 5 June (eg. submit physics and Maths scores from 1 May and chemistry from 5 June , if those scores are best).
Many parents have sent their SAT II scores to me asking if they are good enough. Since there is no such precedence of the co-relation between the marks and NIT/branch, it is really difficult for me to answer. However, I can make out that May 1, 2010 SAT test has been pretty tough and scores are not in high 2300 (I have heard from inner circles of SAT training centres that May SAT 2 tests are normally tough). If people really would like to know where they stand, they have this board where the scores could be shared for better understanding of the subject.
Hi Rt,
My quesion is how is NIT delhi if my son gets CSE or ECE. in DASA spot round. Thanks
Choose new NITs only when you cannot even get into any middle tier NIT.
Dear Mr. Tyagi,
I liked the work and the amount of critical information shared on your site. No doubt it demonstrates the wealth of information and latest updated knowledge. Currently I am in dual mind- My son has scored CGPA 10 score in 10th (CBSE) and he wishes to move to India. He has studied here in Saudi Arabia for last 5 years.
If he moves to India now whether he will qualify for DASA?
Another question is if he studies over here can he appear through AIEEE and qualify for merit seats.
What will you advise me in case you have to take such decision. Count on your valuable guidance.
best regds & tks.
Rama.
If your son moves to India, he will NOT be eligible for DASA scheme.
If he continues (presently Saudi), he WILL be eligible to write AIEEE/IIT-JEE/AIPMT.
The ideal thing in such cases of shifting to India is to have self-evaluation or external evaluation of the potental. Many parents ask the wards to write entrance exams for Ramaiyah caoching-Hyd, Vidyamandir-Delhi, Bansal/Resonance/Narayana India level entrance exam for scholarship after completing 10th std. The effort is not to take the full/partial scholarship but to understand the potential to crack such exams.
At another level, if your ward had appeared in NTSE or Acer exams in 7/8/9/10 and had been ccoming in top 95 percentile, there is good chance to crack the competitive exams.
If you have not done some of above and moving to India, I would consider that risk-reward ratio is not in your favour.
My son scored 1920 in SAT, he got above 80% in Board exam and now has got admission in VNIT. do you think he would find it very tough. He had not prrpared for IIT-JEE or so.
Thanks for asking a very good question. I have access to info relating to performance of such candidates during engg course and in essence, the tough life starts after entering the college. Those who get 2200 in SAT2 and above (90% + in CBSE), do reasonably well during engg. However, the life would be difficult for those who are below 2000 SAT 2 score (or less than 80% in CBSE), MANY OF THEM GET COMPARTMENT OR HAVE TO REPEAT THE YEAR (especially 1st & 2nd year).
However, above fact is not to create panic but to make aware of hard life and making your wards ready for some hard work if they are not used to do so. The worst thing that can happen is to start enjoying college life without being good in academics.
Dear Mr Raj,
First of all Im really thankful to you for your help to all of us.
I would like to ask two questions
1) How do we apply to delhi and as per my knowledge i will have to block 7250 in nit/iiit admission and if i still havent made up my mind as to which college to go to will my money have to be blocked in both places?
2)I have no problems in going to any of these colleges, but I would really like to know what would be the better option DTU or NIT SURATHKAL in terms of everything placement, campus. On an average if you were in my place which college would you choose and why?I have a score for 2220 and i am awaiting my next score which I hope will be better.
I have interest in Computer Science Engineering.
Thanks For Your Help In advance
1) DTU admission has not yet been announced (no idea if they will be announced at all)
2) It is very difficult to assume “if you were in my place” as conditions are different from each other. I have so many relatives in Delhi and flats in NCR that I might go nowhere but DTU (if available to begin with). Consider that all relatives cannot be relied-upon.
Sir,
With 2220 score which is my current score will improve hopefully when the may result is out,but just as a query with 2220 can i hope to get mechanical in NITK atleast by 3rd list? If not mechanical within that much will chemical be open to me?
2) in the dasa form when i give my pref list if i get my 2nd pref and i do not accept my first pref will be considered for the second list and so on right?
ty :)!
1) Chem is possible with your score
2) You would have to accept whatever is allotted AND simultaneously indicate your preference for uplift to get higher branches when available later.
Dear Sir,
Under the DASA scheme, are we supposed to deposit 7000 USD alongwith the application. The site says 250 USD is the registration fee and is non-refundable. Does it mean that we have to only deposit 250 USD along with the application and not 7000 USD.
Regards,
Ramesh
My understanding of the rules is that the candidate has to deposit complete $7000 +250 at the time of application. This is to prevent blocking seats by just depositing $250. If any candidate accepts the seat and doesn’t take actual admission, 50% of $7K would be deducted.
Dear Sir,
My son has got a SAT score of 1800 im the Jan 2012 SAT exam. Does he stand a chance of getting E & CE in any of the colleges listed in DASA
Except for the top 5 DASA high-demand colleges (NIT-K/T/W/C, PEC), there is chance.
Hello,
You are doing a wonderful job.My scores have come and I got an overall of 2230.Is there a chance for me to get Electrical and Electronics engineering in NIT suratkhal?
You have fair chances to get EEE at NIT-K. However, to make the chances brighter, you could improve score by another 40-50 to make it beyond any doubt.
Sir, apart from tution tution and hostel fees for DASA , i hear we have to pay other fees as well like development fee, registration and xam fees etc. how much will that amount to?
Hostel Fee is about Rs 10,000 per semester. Regn fee one time is about $250 and Tuition fee is $7000.
This year I put my son in anna university (college of engineering , guindy) which is one of the best college. Although my son scored very good marks in SAT he opted for the anna university due to good hostel facilities(NRI hostel this year started), metro city and easily accessible although the fees is same like NITs.
Sir,
came across ur post , I m planning to join my son in nri quota in ceg .. his marks is well within last yrs cutoff. could u tell me about any pros and cons in joining the college as a nri student? he studied in chennai but my husband works abroad…
Any response from readers would be appreciated.
Hello Sir,
I am researching about the options for the private engineering college admission for an OCI student. I have a couple of questions about the admission to private engineering college.
– Is it manadatory that they have to get admitted under NRI quota. Can they be admitted under regular management quota ?
– Only colleges approved by AICTE to admit PIO / OCI student are allowed to admit them or any College can admit them under Management quota ?
– If they are admitted under NRI quota, do they need to pay the fee in USD only. Can they pay the equivallent in indian rupees ?
Thanks in Advance
Please find below inputs
1) For Private Engg colleges, getting into Management Quota requires the applicant to appear for the competitive exams based on which the seats are given in management quota. For NRI quota, no applicant doesn’t need to appear for such institute-level/entrance exams.
2) Can’t generalise but most institute would admit under Management Quota based on merit list in the exam (the fee goes up as the ranking is lower in the entrance exams).
3) Some institute ask for USD, but most need INR.
I suggest you start talking to the private institute directly as such institutes are pretty open to discuss such stuff.
Dear Mr. Raj,
If you could please let me know how the students exam grades are calculated. This I need to know, because my son has got grades like BC,CA,DD,BB etc. And I do not know, What realy it means.
I do agree with in this regard high is not the solution for good education. Since, same happened once long ago (8-9 Years) when the fee has been increased to USD 6000/- and next year USD 2000/- were adjusted against 2nd year fee. It may me slashed againg, who knows.
Mr Aftab
You are correct there are more issues attached to it and even staff at DTU are not very clear about it.
Anyone of the following two conditions makes you eligible to claim seats against NRI Quota
1) You should be NRI means “Non resident Indian” not staying in India.
OR
2) If you are residing in India then you have to fulfill one of the condition mentioned in your mail.
Thanks Sanjay for your reply. Can we talk to understand and clarify better? What is your phone number? I stay in kuwait and my mobile number is 00965 – 55494351.

Sir
Dear Raj, Can you or any parent of senior NIT students ,guide me on the below. My daughter is studying in NIT.
1. Do every student who wish to register for campus placement, gets registered for it ?
2. Is there any criterion for getting registered for campus placement? If yes, what are those for top 2 -3 NITs?
3. If there are criteria for it, are those set by the Institute ?
Please , I appreciate and thank you in anticipation.
Regards
Joe.
Hello Joe,
All NRI students are eligible for Campus placements. However each institute may set a criteria like CGPA to more than 6 or 6.5 etc.
A CGPA of 7 and above will ensure the canditate is 100 percent in the list.
Best Regards
Gopichand
Dear Sir
My son is an Indian bor, got his US Passport & OCI in 2008. Till 8th grade completion he studied in USA, started his 9th grade in Bangalore with CBSE board. He will be taking 12 CBSE board exams in March/April 2012.
He already took SAT (Dec 2010) and his score is 2100. His PSAT score is 221/240. He is planning to take SAT2 and ACT in the coming months.
Now questions are
– can he made use of DASA scheme for his possible NIT admissions in 2012?
– if he NOT allowed to make use of DASA, can he take AIEEE?
– Or is he neither allowed to make use of DASA nor under AIEEE?
– Any idea what are the fees for DASA for 2011?
– To improve his chances for a better branch should he take SAT again before ACT?
Thanks a lot for your help/feedback and direction.
Regards
Mohan
Foreign Passport holders/OCI are eligible for DASA even when they are studying in India. DASA fees are $7000 PER ANNUM.
I think there is a 1 time fee of 7000USD + every year 7000 USD under annual fee, for NITs is that right?
On a side note, with Annauniversity, there is a 7000USD per annum, plus 29,000USD as a one time fee. Is this a common trend in every Govt/Pvt Colleges who admits NRIs/FNs?
On a side note, how do you look, BioMedical Engineering / Biotechnology undergraduate programs in NITs? Which is the best among the existing NITs which offer the above branches?
Help is highly appreiciated.
Regards
Mohan
Under DASA, the fee is $7000 per annum. I am not sure about Anna Univ so wouldn’t comment. In NITs, the branch ranking follows college ranking (i.e. NIT-Trichy would attract best students amongst NITs in all branches). Personally I don’t have high regard for BioTech courses compared to other opportunities that exists for NRIs in other engg branches, but others are fully entitled for their views.
Dear Sir,
Now out of total 2100 seats, 1590 are available for spot round. It is all because of stiff increase in fees that people preferred other private colleges than NITs and done great harm to the image of NITs. It is high time that NIT Surathkal should review this fees and revise it to original as done for minimum requirement for SAT score.
Rajratan
I fully agree with Mr.Rajratan. Keeping very high fee structure affects the image of an institution. I think DASA is following Anna University in this aspect. But one has to note the difference between NRI quota of Anna University and DASA in the sense Anna University is i) Open for dependents of NRIs also, including students studied in India ii) No common exam in the SAT style.
DASA is aiming a merit based selection parallel to AIEEE. though the later being stiffer, and thus telling the world DASA involves a merit based selection process for students having only international schooling. Why such a huge fee hike. I do not think Government of India is financially dependent on few NRI students for running NITs. Even Anna University being a Government Body also should not ask for such a huge fee. All NRIs are not rich as most of us think. Those NRIs who are rich have plenty of colleges around the globe and moderate fee is not an attraction to them. The criteria would be different for them. I know a student who has brilliant academic record in plus two could not go to DASA for want of 3 years minimum studies abroad and therefore had to go to Anna. If DASA is very particular about high fees then the selection should not ask for SAT scores and minimum 3 years study abroad. Make it “NRI quota”
My son is preparing for IITJEE -2013 under FIITJEE he is presently studying in class 11th in. delhi under CBSE. For admission in NIT under DASA scheme, what sort of preparation should he do and what are the test/exam that he has to appear in to get admission under the scheme
How much time does he have left to prepare and when are the SAT going to be held. Do these NITs / PEC/ MNNIT also conduct admission through any other exam?
He is an AMERICAN NATIONAL Having INDIAN PIO CARD he is interested mainly in aeronautical engineering / computer engineering
Does he have to appear for both SAT-1 and SAT -2 for admission under DASA
Sanjay Dewan
Your son would need to give SAT 2 subject test in PCM. Please visit following website for more info on DASA scheme.

Mr. Raj I request you to answer my query posted on 19th July. I mention it here for your quick reference. My son has studied from class 1 to class 8 in Oman. He completed class 9 and 10 from India. Class 11 he did from Kuwait and now he is in class 12 in Kuwait.
After finishing his class 12 from Kuwait, will he be eligible for Delhi Technical University (assuming he gets good score in SAT level 2)?

Reply
For DTU admission the NRI has to be non-resident for 9 years out of last 10. So I would think he would not be eligible for DTU but for DASA scheme he would be eligible.
Thanks Raj for the clarification on DTU but it appears there is more to this issue. As given in website of DTU, one of the following two conditions should be met.
1. Being NRI in 8 out of the previous 10 years, or
2. Not being in India more than 630 days in the last 7 years.
My query is that testing condition 1 is easy but how they will test the alternative condition (condition 2). Stamping on the passports for entry and exit are not very legible and many a times multiple stamps are put over one another. Do you know what is the method which DTU follows?
Regards
Aftab Alam
I invite DTU parents who have got the admissions recently regarding eligibility criteria.
Sir
i have got a seat in NITW..in ece..my first choice..i am indeed very thankful and indebted to you for all the help and info that you have been providing us
God Bless!..:)
Students applying for MNNIT Allahabad, Computer Science and Engineering this year through DASA,
please reply 😀
sir
do we need any refrence books or our cbse 11th and 12th books for reference in 1st year btech course in nits??
Any know the exact date for DASA registration and classes commence at NITW, please share.
Best regards.
S.Khan
sir,now as the cut off score is to be relaxed to 1440 for spot round.can i will get mechanical in allahabad, durgapur or bhopal. my score is 1710.
Most likely yes. You can get the branch in all these good NITs.
I agree sir, it may create a problem. However, i saw the aieee counscelling schedule. Their 4rt and 3rd round happen around the time i get my a-level results..
And as DTU is in its second year of this process, it may wait for my results.
Also what i feel is that DTU’s scheme is quiet similar to DASA. except for the way they take our SAT scores.
Im taking a 50-50 probability though. But i pray that i get DTU
nishit rastogi
Dear Mr.Raj :
Could you please give some information regarding DASA student reporting date at NITW, as per NITK allotment letter it says reporting is between 20-30 July,
Best regards.
can any one give info regarding reporting dates for dasa candidates to nit warangal.
sir i want to know about reporting dates for dasa candidates to nit warangal for admission. if any selected candidate to nit warangal have this information please share with us.
thank you very much.
If any blog reader has obtained the reporting dates for NIT Trichy, through telephonic contacts, please advise. So far nothing has been updated in their website.
it may be on the 22nd but not confirmed.Classes alos expect to start the sameday. The response from NITT is poor
Ravindran
My son is in 12th std.now in a indian cbse school in singapore. He is here, from 11th std. He had completed his 10th from delhi cbse school. Will he qualify for the nri quota in the NITs or is 3 yrs of study abroad compulsory to qualify for the NRI quota. It is very confusing because some say that only 11th &12th std. should be completed abroad.Pl.clarify.Thanks
DASA eligibility requires 3 years of studies abroad (in last 6 years) including 11 and 12th from abroad.
Can you please elaborate on spot admissions? Do they have separate seat allotment for spot admissions( there is one seat matrix in the website) Is it for students who have applied earlier and did not get any branch or some students can apply fresh for spot admissions?
The spot admissions offers seats that remain unfilled by normal process. Based on last years experience, even fresh applicants can report who have not earlier submitted the form.
Dear Raj,
Dear Raj,
First of all Thank you for your Excellent contribution on DASA admissions. NIT-K has done an excellent job this year, but for the drastic increase in fees and SAT cut-off score.
Just as an info to the NRI community, IIIT-H had opened up this year with 20 seats offerred under DASA quota for CSE/ECE branches. The minimum SAT-II score required for applying was 2000 (Maths-II, Physics & Chemistry). My daughter had scored 2400 in SAT-II and has been offerred a seat for 4 year B.Tech CSE programme at IIIT-H. As we heard that IIIT-H is rated higher than NIT-K, NIT-T & NIT-W, we preferred IIIT-H over the NIT’s. It is worthwhile to note that AIEEE candidates prefer IIIT-H over all other NIT’s and IIIT’s.
More info on IIIT-H is available on their website http://www.iiit.ac.in and DASA specific info is available at the URL http://www.iiit.ac.in/admissions/undergraduate/ugdasaap.
Keep up the good work. Thanks & Regards,
Suresh
Sir
My daughter has got allotment in PEC Electrical in first list…. do you have any information on the reporting date for DASA candidates to the college for admission? I am unable to retrive the information from PEC website as a result I am unable to finalise my travel arrangements. They do not seem to respond to telephone queries..
As per DASA rules, the college reporting to be per individual college. The below schedule in PEC for AIEEE applicants could help you in someway
http://chdenggadmissions.nic.in/PDF/CounsSchedule.pdf
Dear Raj sahab,
We very much appreciate your dedicated service to NRI community. Your timely information and guidance had helped many parents, and students seeking admission in NITs and other pretigious institutes. We are one of the benificiaries of your services, since we had been following your blog regularly for the past one year and it had helped my son getting Mechanical in NITW.
Your cut-off forecast was excellent.
We wish you good health and happy life.
Dear Raj
Another observation. Last year in the first merit list 530 candidates were above 1800. This year the first list shows only 463 above 1800.(and that is the total allotted in first list).
So the early preparation for SAT II has not made any difference?
Regards
Joe
Dear Raj
My son got admission in NITT- Mechanical, which was his first choice.
Your prediction of expected cut-off marks was almost close to perfection and was really helpful. You were also correct in stating that the steep-hike in fees will result in fall in the number of applicants.
We appreciate your anlaysis and good work.
Dear Krishnan,
Congratulations for getting into NITT-Mech.
Infact, we had published the expected cut-off (+-50 score) on this blog to act as a guide to fill-in the branch/college preference, it was not exactly meant to be hitting bulls eye. A decision needed to be made out of two choices
1) Try to help the community positively to take a better decision 2) Protect virtual reputation by not publishing the cut-off list. Sometimes we have to be upfront and be open for criticism.
All the best.
Regards
Raj
Dear Raj
I noticed the number of candidates with 2400 is same this year too as last year. 13 students are with 2400.
Regards
Thank you sir, your blog helped alot. I got MNNIT csc, my 1st choice.
Can you help me with the DTU admission aswell.
I got a score of 1940. and i satisfy all the eligibility criteria except for the fact that i am yet to get my A-levels results. (for which i sent them an application by my school stating that i’ll get the result in early August.)
DO you think they’ll take me, as they only have 45 seats and my score isnt as great..
and i even saw last years selected students, just 14 out of 45 seats were occupied.
would there be any rise in the number of students this year?
please reply as im very tensed.
Thanking you,
Nishit Rastogi.
For DTU admissions, your main issue is delay in getting results of qualifying exam (A-level) and not the SAT 2 score. This year DTU is only considering SAT2 scores in Maths and Physics. Last year was the first year for NRI/PIO seats and the scheme was announced very late resulting in only few applications.
If I were in your position, I will get admitted to DASA seat and think of DTU only as a lottery (due to results of qualifying exam not being available by the time DTU merit list is announced)
Thank you Mr Raj.
As mentioned by you earlier I did get NITK information technology. Thanks for patiently answering us.
My son got ECE in NITW in first merit list, it was his second choice. Shall he opt upgrade for second list to wait for Mech at NITW. What do you say about ECE branch in NITW ,…… is it good ?
Work done by NITK on DASA scheme of this year very good.
Your blog has been always a great help.
Thanks & Best regards.
Mabrook!! If your son is very particular about the branch, then he can certainly opt for upgrade in the second list. At NIT-W this year, Mech cut-off is 2060, ECE cut-off is 1990 and CSE cut-off is 2010. Please do check how close your SAT score are from 2060 cut-off for Mech.
For me, ECE branch at NIT-W is pretty good.
NITK came out with flying colors this year. I just feel that the fee structure and 1800 cut-off were very stiff for many students and should have been re-structured in a better way..
sir………….. my daughter got ece in nit warangal……….your blog helps us a lot regarding sat exams and dasa rules and regulations……….thankyou very much.
Congratulations!! Do share with us how is Warangal for girl students.
Dear Mr.RAJ,
You have given us great suport during last few months on DASAand based on your cutoff indication,I advised my son to push for improvement in June SATand he could get 2330 and got admission in NIT Trichy Mech.
I used to travel to Baharain frequently and will meet to thank you in person.
Keep up the great job and we will also update on any news which will help the NRI folks.
Regards,
Ravindran
Mabrook!! This time Mechanical branch has been a surprise topper. Please do share your inputs upon admission.
My son got Mechanical in NIT Warrengal in DASA’s first merit list.
Bravo…! Thanks for all your effort to give us proper info.
Mabrook!! I would appreciate if you could contribute on this blog about your experiences of NIT-W.
Dear Mr. Raj,
Thanks for giving your opinions/suggestions so far in reply to my earlier mails.Probably the last question I would like to ask you here before my daughter’s admission is now after DASA merit declaration, we have two confirmed options available for her:
BIT Mesra and MNNIT Allahabad (both ECE and fees paid in advance)
Which one we should opt for in terms of academics, facilities and placement for my daughter.
Regards
Manoj Arora
Dear Manoj,
We feel happy with happy parents on the day of DASA seat declaration. You have been one of the typical blog visitor, having joined at the right time just a year back and posting 11 messages. Between BIT mesra and MNNIT, I would choose a college that is comfortable with respect to local guardian, travel and other general facilities. Personally, myself being from Delhi, I would choose MNNIT (and so many Delhi/NCR parents do the same ). However, if your home town is somewhere near Mesra/Ranchi, BIT would be more convenient.
Sir,
Got a civil in NITW Warangal which is not my 1s choice. Can i change the bramch after i enter the institution?? Please help because i’m interested in mechanical engineering and civil was my 5th choice by mistake coz a friend of my said that civil in NITW is so good and hard to get so i simply slip it into the list thinking i will not get it anyway if i’m not to get the mechanical choices i opted in other biggies !
My first advice to you would be to start taking responsibilities for your actions (rather than being influenced by friends in the matter of career).
Branch change in same college is allowed by some NITs when higher ranked applicant does not take the seat, however your SAT2 scores are not high enough to get Mech in NITW. If you don’t like civil branch at all at any cost, you could refuse taking any seat and try your luck during spot admissions. The risk to this strategy is that there may not be any spot admissions this year (there was spot admission last year) and in that case you could lose 1 year.
Update: DASA scheme 2011 is likely to have spot admissions alongwith relaxed SAT2 scores of 1440. Please visit http://www.dasanit.org
sir while taking admission through dasa scheme to nits, do we need to get our TC attested by the embassy of india in the country which i studied?
Dear Mr. Raj, What is the internal sliding system that the NITs are supposed to follow after 3 rounds; how dos it work?
. Also, please advise the minimum number of years of stay in abroad required for DTU admission.
The sliding system is not elaborated in DASA brochure, so would not like to second-guess on it.
For DTU admissions following are the NRI eligibility
An individual is Non-Resident when he is “not a resident” or who is “not ordinarily resident”. A person is treated as “not ordinarily resident” when any of the following conditions is satisfied:
1. If he/she has not been resident in India in nine out of ten preceding years; or
2. If he/she has not been in India for a period of 730 days or more during the preceding seven
years.
Internal sliding is done within the same NIT you can change to other branch if there is a seat vacant.
Sir,
I scored 2250 in the june sat. Dasa requires percentiles along with sat scores in case of ties. My highest scores are from the june test, however the june percentile is only available on june 28 on collegeboard (deadline is june 29 for dasa)
1)So will dasa consider my june scores for the merit list ??
2)Is 2250 enough for mech in nit calicut??
Appreciate your help
Regards
Kevin
sir, my sat score is 1710. can i get admission to nit after the announcement of third list or in spot admission.
As per current DASA rules, you need to have min SAT 2 score of 1800. It would be too speculative to bet if lower scores than this would be accepted. I suggest that you have a primary plan amongst private colleges (choose a high ranked college, there is a separate post on this blog for ranking of private colleges) before it is too late there and keep any changes in DASA rules as lottery.
Dear Sir,
What is your choice between DTU and NITs with respect to quality of education, over all personality development, career prospects etc. in case we get the required branch (CSE) at both colleges. Also kindly note that NITs fees is substantially higher than DTU.
If your answer is NITs, then which is the best for CSE branch NITK/NITT/NITW ? Although NITW is very convenient for us (since its closer to Hyd) we dont want to prioritise based on proximity.
Also one of my friends is thinking of BIT Mesra for her child. Kindly let me know your opinion of that institute?
Your advise is highly valued.
Regards,
Bharathi
Personally I prefer DTU over all NITs (Outlook 2010 also ranks DTU higher than all NITs) due to awesome placements, overall personality dev, metro facilities for CAT prep. BIT-Mesra is good institute but not above the top 4 NITs (NIT-T, NIT-W, NIT-K,MNNIT).
Dear Sir,
My son is a US Citizen and a PIO. We moved to India in 2008 and my son studied his 9th, 10th, 11th and 12 th grades in Hyderabad, India. I went thru the eligibility conditions for admsn to BTech under DASA in Delhi Tech University as below, They are very confusing. Not sure if my son is eligible to apply as PIO. Dont think he will be considrered as a FN also. Can someone clarify please…
“Only those Non Resident Indians/PIO students who have studied from schools or colleges in foreign countries and passed the qualifying examinations i.e. second year Pre-university or XII standard or equivalent examination from a recognized university/Board will be eligible. This will include the students studying in the schools or colleges situated in foreign countries even if affiliated to the Board of Secondary Education or Universities located in India, but will not include students studying in those schools or colleges (situated in India) and affiliated to the Boards of Secondary Education, or Universities of the foreign countries. Students passing the qualifying examination from Boards or universities located in foreign countries as external students and dependent of NRIs studying in India will not be included. In case of Foreign Nationals candidates, who have passed qualifying examination from any country including INDIA, shall be eligible for admission.”
I know for sure that DASA scheme allows eligibility to PIO/FN even when they have studied in India. If your son is US citizen, he should he eligible for DTU as well going by the below criteria
“In case of Foreign Nationals candidates, who have passed qualifying examination from any country including INDIA, shall be eligible for admission.”
Please contact DTU to hear from horse’s mouth.
Dear sir,
Thanks for the quick response. I didnt want to bother you further so tried talking to DTU. They gave me a totally useless answer. Asked me to apply and see if I get a seat or not.
In the first place I am doubtful if DTU is taking FN/PIO students under DASA at all. Looks like they have their own scheme and rules. Never saw the word DASA on their site.
As per their site, a FN should have a foreign citizenship ( a foreign passport) and NOT a PIO. A FN could have studied in India.
And a PIO should NOT have studied in India. He should have passed his +2 outside India ( as mentioned in my above message)
My son is an American (has American passport), a PIO and studied last 4 years in India.
So I am doubtful if he is eligible unless I hide that he is a PIO. Dont want to do that.
Has anyone been in this situation? How was that resolved?
Some one kindly guide me please.
Thanks a ton & Best regards once again Sir,
Bharathi.
DTU is admitting NRI’s/FNs under their own univ-level scheme and has nothing to do with DASA scheme. Your situation is really tricky since DTU itself has not given a direct reply.
I can say that under DASA, the PIOs are eligible even if they have done their schooling in India. Since the NRI quota is mis-used by many in India by people without having any connection with any NRIs, univs have some strict regulations. However, I see more than 50% probability that your case would be considered positively by DTU.
Dear Sir,
Is there any ” PIO who studied 10+2 in India” and got admission in DTU this year?
Friends, any PIO out there who got a seat in DTU kindly share the details. The rules on their website regarding PIO eligibility are not clear hence this request.
I Really appreciate your kind response. Thanks,
Bharathi.
What is the scope of Bio technology or Bio medical Engineeering. My daughter has to choose between PSG Coimbatore, Bio Technologyand Eco Hons. from DU
We have been hearing Biotech story from last 10 years but nothing much has happened in India in terms of R&D, opportunities. If you have plans to move to US- very good branch.
dear sir,
my daughter has secured a score of 2150 for her sat exam, she is trying for architecturing in nit calicut , i have checked out the expected cut off , but is this score enough for her?
i would also like to know weather nit trichi or nit calicut is better for archecturing
-ali
Arch branch is available in very few NITs and the cut-off SAT score can swing a lot depending on how students of the year choose this branch. The expected cut-off mentioned at this blog has more than 50% probability of coming true.
NIT-Trichy is actually best for Arch (and any other branch compared to NIT-C)
sir i have sat score of 2030.can i get eee or cs in nitw?
Please refer below link to get some idea of what could be expected
http://nrispeaks.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/dasa-sat2-cut-off-college-branch.pdf
Sir
Is the IIIT H and NITK are interlinked through DASA scheme ?
Which due you think best college for Eng in Bangalore apart from PESIT.
Admission to IIIT-H is only thru AIEEE merit (no DASA seats).
For ranking of various colleges (including Bangalore), please refer below article
http://nrispeaks.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/list-of-indian-engineering-college-rankings/
IIIT-H and NITK are not linked through DASA Scheme but IIIT-H do have their own DASA scheme and fee is USD 10000/-.
Assuming a student gets admission to Computer Engineering at IIIT-H and NIT-K, which one should we accept and why? We are a bit confused as IIIT-H is a new institute started in 1998, whereas NIT-K has established itself over a periof of several years.
Also after completion of Graduation, how is the Graduate Engineer valuated in the market for IIIT-H vis-a-vis NIT-K, assuming they have the same GPA say 8.0 ? How about chances for higher studies for IIIT-H Vs NIT-K CSE students? You advise will help.
IIIT-H is the best AIEEE institute- there are enough material available on the internet and on this blog to support it. One info I can give on this query is to consider- in 2009, out of first 1000 AIEEE rankers, 29 selected IIIT-H and only 6 selected NIT-K.Other pointers are: consider how many PhD faculty IIIT-H has and how many in NITs, find out how many PhD’s have been done in last 10 years from IIIT-H and any other NIT.
