DASA/NRI Engg admissions- Discussion

Update: 2 July 2011

The minimum SAT2 score requirement of 1800 could be relaxed to 1440 during spot admission. Those applicants who have taken admissions in private colleges due to minm SAT2 score requirement have a big opportunity to get admissions to NITs as NIT brand is highly recognised in India and abroad.

Update: 1 July 2011

DASA-2011 1st Merit List has been declared today. Hearty Congratulations to all those who got their preferred branch and the college :).

Please find below the list

DASA-2011-1ST-Merit-List

Following is the actual SAT2 Cut-off for various branches and colleges

DASA-Cut-off-College-Branch-actual

The key highlights of DASA scheme merit list year are

1) Mechanical branch was the most popular branch going by the cut-offs, followed by ECE and CSE. Out of top 100 applicants, 33 opted for Mechanical, 21 for ECE and 25 for Computers.

2) NITK was the most popular college. Following is the number of DASA scheme toppers selecting this institute:8 out of 10, 15 out of 20, 34 out of 50 and 58 out of first 100 toppers selecting NITK.

3) NITK (58 out of top 100) was followed up by NIT-Trichy (18 toppers out of 100), NIT-W (8 out of 100) and PEC & NIT-C getting 7 toppers each out of 100 toppers. We have been consistent in giving this ranking on this blog. Last year (2010), the break of college-wise preference of top 100 applicants was as following: NITK (37), NIT-T: 23, NIT-W:14, NIT-C: 10 and PEC:9.

Leaving aside cut-off scores, following is the break-up of applicants for DASA2011: NITK: 90 applicants, NIT-T:75, NIT-C: 65, NITW:62, PEC: 40, MNNIT-Allahabad: 31, SVNIT-Surat:23, MNIT-Jaipur: 20, VNIT-Nagpur: 15 applicants.

4) Due to steep fee hike in DASA scheme, less applicants have selected DASA scheme this year, many opting for other govt/private colleges. This is evident by number of students opting for DASA scheme has come down by about 15% in the category of those getting more than 1800 SAT2 score as compared to last year.

My apologies to all those parents/students whose querries I could not respond in last week due to minor injury I had on my wrist.

Update: 23 Nov 2010

I have been receiving quite a few queries on how to improve the SAT2 scores (some candidates have taken 1st SAT 2 attempt in Oct/Nov and are not quite satisfied with their efforts). The general thread of the queries is that the candidates are getting about 700 scores (out of 800) in the subject and how to improve the score by about 50 points in each subject so that the total SAT 2 score can reach to around 2250 from 2100. In fact, this jump in scores can dramatically improve the college/branch one can get.

Before I start with any other advice on the subject- I would say there is no short cut or substitute to hard work and well rounded preparation. Having said that, there is always scope for smart strategies that are used by corporates to focus on the big picture. So following should help students as well:

1) Follow Rule of 80:20 (Parato Principle): The Pareto principle, the law of the vital few states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Therefore, 20% people/countries own 80% of world’s wealth (think of G20 countries having 84% of world GDP). 20% of components in a car are responsible for 80% of cars stuck on the road (ever wondered they are the same culprits: battery, empty tank, tyre, spark plug and radiator water), 20% students of any school/college are responsible for 80% of the problems 🙂 .

To cut the long story short, 20% of the weak areas on the given subject are responsible for 80% of the incorrect answers- so find out those 20% problematic areas and you can eliminate 80% of errors. These 20% weak areas could be related to subject theory, silly calculation mistakes, not reading the question correctly and what is being asked etc-etc. I have learnt the hard way during my certification days (Sun Java, PMP, Value Engg and others) that most mistakes for me were not related to lack of technical knowledge but related to not understanding the question itself-as to what is actually being asked in the question. So grab some sets of SAT 2 Mock Tests, solve one set of mock tests-identify your weak areas (many SAT 2 books/mock tests are available in the market and online). First, list down the weak areas and improve those areas before attempting any more mock tests. Then grab another set of SAT 2 mock tests, and apply new understanding and learning. Just follow the iteration a couple of times and believe me you can improve your scores dramatically by studying smartly, efficiently and in shortest possible time (by just concentrating on 20% weak area)

2) Just follow my another article on How to Solve MCQ Questions (the article has been published in many magazines.) Since SAT 2 is a multiple choice exam, below link should also help greatly

Update:16 Oct 2010

I have received an email from the concerned authority in NIT-K noting that advance info on DASA 2011-12 has been posted at

http://www.dasanit.org/

Candidates interested in seeking admission in undergraduate engineering programmes in India are requested to take note of important details. Compared to DASA 2010-11, there are several changes in terms of eligibility requirements, fee structure, participating institutions, process etc.

The key changes being 1) Minimum SAT2 score of 1800 2) NIT-K having obtained a code number from Collegeboard for automatic SAT 2 score submissions, 3) Fee is proposed to be increased to $7000 (from $4000 earlier), subject to approval from ministry.

Update: 12 July 2010

Finally, DASA merit list has been published. We wish all the best to the blog visitors and wish them a great career. Live and enjoy each day of your college life butdon’t ignore your studies. DASA candidates need to put that extra effort to sail thru the studies as compared to AIEEE candidates.

We are in the process of collecting some useful ebooks and question bank for 1st semestercandidates to help them keep track of their studies and not lose sight of it.We would provide the link of the study material within one week to all blog readers as complimenray gift for visiting this board and helping each other. There is no need to provide your SAT2 scores as same has been noted in the merit list.

Choosing Between Electronics and Computers Branches

1) College Preference by NRIs

Question: Should I choose Engg Branch vs. Top College

Answer: Select the best college for your rank- but dont compromise on your branch. The best way is to first choose your preferred branch in top 30-40 colleges. If the rank is not good, try to get your second best branch selection in top 30-40 colleges. Try not to do engg from a college not in top 50 engg colleges of India. Preferably, select a college not by its location/metro but the overall rank of the college.

Following is a list of NITs most preffered by NRIs (in descending order of competition) during 2009. Please note that this list is skewed heavily towards south India NITs (for e.g .NIT-Calicut is preferred over NIT Warangalbecause of regional background of applicants)

1) NIT Surathkal
2) NIT Trichy
3) NIT Calicut
4) NIT Warangal
5) PEC Chandigarh
6) MNNIT Allahabad
Following NITs also see some demand from NRIs(but notsimilar heavy demand as for above listed colleges-it doesnt mean they are inferior in any respect)

7) MNIT-Jaipur/IIIT- Allah/NIT-Kuru/ NIT-Bhopal/NIT-Nagpur/NIT-Rourkela

Additionally, following are the ranking of Indian Engg Institutes

India Today Ranking of Top 25 Engg Institutes
Ranking of Top 100 Engg Colleges

Private Colleges

1) PSG College of Technology Coimbatore
2) Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
3) Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology Patiala
4) Vellore Institute of Technology Vellore
5) RV College of Engineering Bangalore
6) Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Infocom Technology Ghadhinagar
7) Manipal Institute of Technology Manipal

2) Branch Preference

Question: What branch is best?
Answer:
Normally people choose branches based on their ‘scope’ (i.e. career potential) rather than their interests. However, there is there is no one in this world who can predict which branch will be best employable four years down the lane. There is simply no way you can predict that. So what is the solution? Go by your gut feeling. There is nothing called a good branch and nothing called a bad branch. A good guy in a bad branch is much more employable than a bad guy in a (so called) good branch. If you have the love towards a subject, then go for it. If you dont know your interests, one can follow the rat race by following in the footsteps of last years branch preferences by successful candidates. In the end, one can achieve anything in spite/irrespective of his educational background
(Please refer below link to understand how AIEEE candidates selected their colleges and branches. The College selection by NRIs have been slightly different from AIEEE candidates as listed above but branch selection by NRIs has been in tune with AIEEE candidates.)

http://aieee.nic.in/ccb2009/ORCR09/Engineering/Eng/orcr.htm)

1) Electronics
2) Computers
3) Electrical and Electronics
4) Mechanical
5) Information Technology
6) Instrument and Control
7) Chemical
8) Civil
9) Production
10) Metallurgy
11) Biotech

3) Pay Packages for branches

Refer below link to get an idea of branch-wise salary package in NIT-Warangal

However, if someone plans to lookout for jobs in US, following link provides the highest starting salaries based on the degrees. Without doubt 8 of 10 top degrees are Engg and Chemical is high flying branch (though aerospace is listed top branch, but I understand there are some restrictions for non-US citizens for the branch. Similarly, Petroleum Engg, was considered best branch with a starting salary of $85K in a separate survey)

Regarding SAT II scores for DASA admissions, there is no precedence for admissions to NITs with SAT II scores and therefore, it would not be easy to know where one stands in the crowd. Boarders can certainly share their SAT II scores (alongwith CBSE XII PCM %) to gauge water. By the way, one can submit the best subject scores from 2 dates if giving exams on both 1 May and 5 June (eg. submit physics and Maths scores from 1 May and chemistry from 5 June , if those scores are best).

Many parents have sent their SAT II scores to me asking if they are good enough. Since there is no such precedence of the co-relation between the marks and NIT/branch, it is really difficult for me to answer. However, I can make out that May 1, 2010 SAT test has been pretty tough and scores are not in high 2300 (I have heard from inner circles of SAT training centres that May SAT 2 tests are normally tough). If people really would like to know where they stand, they have this board where the scores could be shared for better understanding of the subject.

  1. Sir,

My ward is appearing 12th examination this year from INDIAN SCHOOL TANZANIA. Is there any centre here to appear for SAT II examination

  2. sir is 2300 marks in sat enough to get mech/csc/env in dtu?
it would be helpful if you could put up expected cutoffs for dtu also.

    • DTU has started NRI seats only from last year and many parents didn’t know about it in the first year. So the cut-offs were really low (less than 1800) last year. For this year, I would expect the DTU cut-offs to be similar to NIT-T as listed in below list. Due to lower annual fee ($5000/annum) and very attractive placement record, in coming years the cut-off for DTU would become comparable to NIT-K.
      http://nrispeaks.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/dasa-sat2-cut-off-college-branch.pdf

      • Sir A problem for me needs your guidance. My son has a SAT SCORE OF 2310 and 1560 in Maths and Physics(for DTU they consider only Maths and Physics) now we applied in both and are interested in DTU.Do we keep DASA option as a fall back if we do so then we lose 50% of DASA fee.Can we ger ECE/CSE in DTU at this score then we can pull out from DASA and can save nearly 4000 USD.Your guidance is required.

        • Most likely you will get the branch in DTU with the score of 1560. Now no one exactly knows who else is applying in DTU and with what SAT scores. By applying risk management concept, you can multiply the probability of not getting your branch and the big consequence (a budding career) of not getting the branch. Now compare the impact of this event (not getting the branch in DTU) with $4000 you would save- here lies your answer.

  3. Dear Mr. Raj,

First, thank you for providing so many inputs to the parents and the students. I would like to know
how transparent is NITK / DASA in allotment of seats based on SAT-II scores. Do the parents or
the students have any mode of knowing the SAT-II scores of all the students allotted to different
    branches in different NITs?

    Ramesh Babu

    • I have not seen any better transparent process than DASANIT thru NIT-K. A list of all the applicants with their SAT2 score would be published to put the matter beyond any doubts.

      • Yes Sir the process DASA adopted/developed by NIT-K is great and seems to be very tranparent. The online portal used by them is just fantastic and all information is available in the Broshure also.A dedicated helpline responds to all quiry in no time no matter what the mode of communication.wish DTU must have done something tike this.Still almost two weeks have gone and students are still in dark on many fronts.

  4. dear sir,
i have scored 2250 in my sat exams, i would like to know if thats enough to get me into nit-calicut architecturing or civil

  5. Dear Sir
How long does it take to send October SAT scores to NIT-K…it has been almost three weeks since i sent the scores from college board but the dasa site says my scores have not been verified yet
Kindly reply fast as i am very nervous

    • Please contact DASA office. There is some issue in your case as the scores are sent electronically from Collegeboard to NIT-K.

  6. sir
i want to know about the placement packages of branches of Guindy collage which is best guindy or 3 best nits

    • We do not track state-level colleges so can’t help on your query on Guindy college. Personally, we will choose best 3NITs rather than Guindy’s.

  7. Thanks a lot Sirs James and Raj with regards to DTU application.
I have printed the SAT scores from internet and sent the form. How do u get the hardcopy of the SAT score as I did not receive any hardcopy for my Nov exam

    • RECONFIRM THIS WITH DTU PLEASE: To receive a paper based score report should have registered with College Board to receive the paper based scores. If not generate the report from Internet and provide to DTU as an interim measure. You need to prove the Marks Online by logging on to College Board website during the Counselling session.

      • Problem is that the help desk for DTU is not responding to any mode of communication and they made the SAT II score as criteria without getting registered with college board to get the score directly from them as DASA is doing and to add to this College board also does respond as they are interested in sending the scores directly to colleges so that they can earn money. In all this student and parents are the sufferer.

Till date DTU does not have clear guideline on such an important issue.

  8. Dear Raj,
My Son closely missed the IIT-JEE Ranking. He says he will join Engineering in NIT/or reputed college and prepare for next year JEE.Is it possible?
    Thanks.

    • Getting a reasonable ranking (around 3000) in IIT-JEE is really a serious mission and may not be achieved while studying in 1st year of engg. Though I am no expert in IIT-JEE, I can share a useful tip- students can cut their ranks by half to one third only. So if someone has got a rank of about 9000 (on a normal exam day), it is really diffcult to get a rank better than 3000-4000 range in 2nd attempt (and this rank does not get much useful seats in reputed IITs). Being pragmatic and practical also helps to a large extent.

  9. Dear Sir
While filling the application form for DTU there is a row for SAT registeration no with marks for Physics and Maths and SAT total.
Is it total of PCM or only Phy & Mat.
Also DTU is asking for a copy of SAT marks card. The print out from College Board site says it is not an official report card.Hence would like to get some feedback from DTU applicants and you Sir ,on how they have filled the form and submitted SAT scores.DTU does not have any tie up with College board for automatic sending of SAT scores.
    Thanks and Regards
    Pavan

    • DTU requirement is only SAT 2 Physics and Maths (no chemistry).
Anyone who has filled-up for DTU, please help on the SAT score print out query.

      • May be the below will help (HOWEVER WRITE AN EMAIL ON THE BELOW TO DTU OFFICE AND GET THEIR WRITTEN CONFIRMATION):
Give the report generated over Internet as an interim measure. Once you receive the hardcopy from College Board by post (which will be hopefully received before counselling session) you can send it to DTU cross-referring to your application number. Alternatively you can also commit on proving the Marks Online by logging on to College Board website during the Counselling session. Upon agreeement with DTU by email, you can make these notes on the application form, sign and send it.

        • Thanks a lot James. Really appreciate feedback from fellow parents.
Just to share with all guests on blog, DTU fee ($5000/yr) is lower than DASA seats ($7000) and the institute has reputation matching best of NITs.

  10. sir could you also tell me whether i should opt for DTU,NITK OR NITT?IS NITK BETTER OR NIT-T?

    • It is a tough call, India Today 2010 ranking keeps all 3 colleges almost at same place DCE=NITK=NITT. Decide based on your convenience, relatives, travel, weather, cosmopolitan, metro or whatever as difficult to choose.

  11. Great job!! Thanks a lot.
My son scored 2060 in May 7 SAT2. After seeing the list, I assume it is difficult to get Mechanical in the top 4 NITs. Please give me the order of preference NITJaipur,NITSurat,NITKurushetra,NITAllahabad,NIT Bhopal

  12. Dear Sir,

Assuming a student gets selected for CSE admission at IIIT-H, NIT-K and NIT-T, which one should he opt for and why? What would be your order of preference? Is IIIT-H Degree well recognised when compared to NIT’s which are well established over a period of several years? Please advise.
    Thanx

    Sudharsan

    • IIIT-H is the best institute in AIEEE umbrella. Reason- cutoff rank to get into IIIT-H. No other institute in AIEEE can match the faculty and infrastructure of IIIT-H.

  13. Dear Sir,
Is it possible get what was the cutoff for the DTU in NRI quota last year ?
    Pavan

    • Year 2010 being the first year, not many people knew about DTU NRI seats. Students had got admission easily and I guess some seats could not be filled and allotted to other categories.

  14. Dear Sir,

My son has overall rank 1436 and category 1182 as per our state of Eligibility Maharastra for AIEEE2011. My query is can we apply for Gujarat state quota under this rank for Mechanical. His all India rank is 20375. General Category is 16074. Is there possibility of gettting allotment or else we have to choose only Nagpur as we are from Mumbai & based in Dubai. SVNIT Surat is the nearest place for us. Kindly advise

    Regards

    Sadanand Dalvi

    sjdalvi@hotmail.com

    • For NRIs the home state is the address printed on the passport. Since your home state is MH, you can only apply in SVNIT as outsider on all India rank basis. For the rank of 20375 it looks difficult to get into SVNIT in Mech.

  15. Dear Sir
I am concerned about the Ragging in NITs. After seeing in the Youtube, NIT Kurukshetra is horrifing me. My son is already selected Kurukshetra as one of his choices under DASA. Could you please update me about this.

    • I really don’t know the ragging video belongs to which year but I have feedback from hundreds of applicants that ragging is not an issue for NRI students.

  16. HI, I scored 2120 and I was aiming for PEC chandigarh (1. Aeronautical, 2. Mechanical) then surathkal, trichy and warangal for mechanical. CAN I make it in any of them?

    • The score of 2120 is a borderline case to get mechanical in PEC/NIT-W.It really would depend on what preferences other applicants make for this year.

  17. sir……….. generally how much time will be given for dasa students to join in nits.. and how can we know the joining dates of our alloted institute . because tiill now there is hardly any information about the dates of this institutions…………thank you very much.

    • The NITs do not follow identical admission dates and have their own schedule that would be published on their websites in good time.Generally it falls between 15-30 July, so you would have sufficient time to join. In any case, the joining dates for NRIs are a bit flexible however, join at the soonest would be my advice.

  18. Dear Raj,
My son scored good marks in SAT and CBSE Board. He will get in NITK thru DASA.
But he is interested in medicine now.
Can he join in Engineering and side by side prepare for next year medicine entrance? or Leave one year and prepare for next year medicine entrance?

In case required then Will the current year sat marks considered for next year in DASA?

    Thanks.

    • The pre-medical exam is quite tough (due to limited seats available) and it would be quite difficult to do engg and prepare for PMT exam at the same time. Normally SAT scores are valid for 3 years, however, it would be good idea to get sense of it from DASA only (even re-appearing for SAT could be an option).

  19. my son has scored 2010(may 7 2011) in sat subjective tests .Which branch will he get in nitw? The college board website says that it has sent scores to nitk, but the dasa applicant portal does not verify it.Will the scores be received by nitk before the deadline i.e. 15th june.

  20. Dear Mr Raj

My daughter scored 95% PCM in CBSE and has a SAT score of 2310.She is interested in ECE and Computer Science. She is not interested in NIT-K for that matter any of the colleges under DASA due to locational issues except PEC Chandigarh. She is thinking of applying in COEP,DTU Delhi.Your valuable input is required on this matter.

How u rate NITK,PEC,DTU AND COEP for ECE/CS.I know on any given DAY COEP is below the other instituteS but is there a huge difference in these institutes.

    Regards
    Sanjay

    • DTU>NITK>PEC>COEP. I would think DTU would be best for ECE/CS and the placement in CS/ECE is better than a couple of IITs. The difference between DTU/NITK and COEP is quite big as former are considered as good as a IIT ( with lower subject) and most of those who select CS/ECE in NITK/DTU leave their IIT seats because of lower branches they get in IITs.

      • Dear Sir

Thanks a lot for your valuaable input I am sure many of the parents and students must be getting benefitted by your blog.Sir now IPU CET result has also come and she got 561 rank which increased by confusion. Please advice.DTU NIT’s through DASA or Colleges in delhi as per IPUCET Rank.

        • No IPU college ranks in top 30-40 engg colleges. If you are from Delhi area, go for DTU. If from south, evalaute between DTU, NIT-T & NIT-K.

  21. appreciate your dedicated help to curious parents/students, hats off.
My daughter has SAT score 2270, target Chem Engg, Preferance NITK>NITT; i expect higher cutoff this year and request for a fall-back arrangement for the course, any suggestion (out of DASA) will be welcome.

    • Even though you don’t need any fallback as your SAT scores are pretty good, you could consider DTU, BIT-Mesra, VIT, Thapar, Manipal just for the sake of non-DASA options.

  22. Dear Sir,

My son has scored 93% in PCM in CBSE Board exams. SAT score is 2210
How about chances of getting admission at COEP under Gulf 1/3 quota
and under SPDC Scholarship program for Mechanical Engineering in NITs or VIT,Pune.

    • 1) Getting admission under NRI quota in any college that admit NRIs should not be difficult for the score
      2) SPDC scholarship has some eligibility criteria concerning monthly salary and general pool performance of applicants. Even if you are eligible for scholarship, you would have to get the seat under DASA or other exams in the colleges listed in SPDC program. Please check if VIT is listed in SPDC list in the first place.

  23. Hi sir,

I got 1900 in my SAT 2.. According to the cut-offs predicted by you,I will get NIT-K for civil engineering.. But Since my score is only slightly more than that cut-off specified, what are my chances of getting it?

    • The chances are pretty good for marks higher than expected as listed- however no one has seen future. My advice remains- hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

  24. Dear Mr. Raj

My son scored 2160 in SAT-2 , and in PCM 95.33% (CBSE) , how would you rate COEP, Pune / PEC / MNNIT Allhabad/ MNIT Jaipur / SVNIT Surat / Nirma Ahmedabad for Mechanical? Our First choice is Mechanical only.

Thanks a lot for your precious time.

    Regards,

    Rajesh Purohit

    • MNNIT>PEC>MNIT>SVNIT>COEP>Nirma. Please note that the private institutes can claim better infra but the NITs have a tag of theirs and attract higher ranked students.

  25. Dear Mr. Raj,

My daughter has got a ranking of 9962 In UPSEE but the final allottment of college & the branch would take some time. Although, she qualifies for UP-NRI quota too.

Now she has recd.a letter for provisional admission in BIT -Mesra(ECE) wherein we have to deposit the fee on or before 10/6/11.With her SAT score of 1880, should we forego BIT letter & wait for DASA list or go ahead with the payment of fee but still try our luck for getting a good branch thru DASA or in HBTI-K. In the second case we still have to deposit advance fee in DASA.

    Regards
    Manoj

    • MNNIT-Allahabad is definitely better than BIT-Mesra (and HBTI). The rank cut-off in AIEEE tells this story. I can bet with reasonable odds that you would get ECE in MNNIT with the score. Since, it is a question of a career (and your money ) I would like you to take a call with the given info.

  26. Dear Raj,

My daughter secured about 1850 in SATII. Two questions.
    1. She prefers to chose CSE and getting that branch in the top three NITs is difficult. being a girl, which other NIT could be a preferred choice? we are from AndhraPradesh.
    2. How are the placement prospects for Instrumentation and Control Systems in NIT, Trichy? This is another choice for us.

    Regards,

    • 1) for 1800 and CSE, all choices would be open except NITK,T, W and PEC. You would have options in Allahabad, Jaipur, Kuru, Bhopal, Surat, Nagpur and Bhuv.
      2) CSE>>ICS. Would suggest to choose branch over college.

  27. Dear Mr. Raj

Could you pl. advise me , if we do not apply in DASA now before the deadline , still we would be given chance for Spot Admission in August 2011? There is no clear cut guideline on this issue.

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Rajesh Purohit

  28. Dear Sir,

I have got 1900 in SAT 2 along with in CBSE board exams. My choices are:

    1)Nit Suratkhal- Mechanical Engineering
    2)Nit Trichy – Mechanical Engineering
    3)Nit Calicut – Mechanical Engineering
    4)Nit Warangal – Mechanical Engineering
    5)Nit Suratkhal- Civil Engineering

Do I have a chance with getting any of my top 5 choices?

  29. Dear Sir,

My son is applying through DASA and we seek your advise for clarity before we fill up the application online.

    1. We have an option of giving 30 choices of branches/college. In case, we restrict to 10 colleges/branches and in the unfortunate event of not being selected for any of the opted choices, will he able to get through spot admission even though he had no choices opted earlier.

    2. As a proof of residence in U.A.E, will it be enough if we attach copies of visa pages from the passport.

    3. My son scored 2040 in SAT 2011 and i would like to know about his chance of admission in NIT Warrangal or Trichy. If it is less likely, what other NIT would you recommend. His interest is CS and ECE

We request your goodself to kindly clarify the above points so that the submission can be successful.

    Thanks & Regards

    Neelakantan R.A.

    • Please don’t compare BITS-hyd with top NITs like NITK and W. BITS-Pilani can only come ahead of all NITs. AIEEE students like NIT-W as first pref and DASA students like NIT-K as first pref.

  30. Mr raj i would like to appreciate the service u r doing .
my daughters sat score is 2090 and her choice is ece in nitw.ur coments about her chances.
we r also applying for iiit h.since this is firstyear considering
sat scores can u highlight anything.
for ur general feedback forwording this mail.i have not seen many scores above 2000 from my daughters circle.thanking u

    • It is touch and go situation for NIT-W ECE for 2090 (but possible). I personally know few people who have got 2400 SAT score and quite many with 2200+. However, cut-off is not going to go much higher due to stiff fee being demanded by DASA scheme this year as many people are finding other private alternatives for theor own reasons.

  31. Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your immediate response and showing me the path.I will take a call and not pursue with VIT
NITK was a personal preference because my father and sister are ex NITKians. If not NITK what should be the next options for other NITs for pursuing IT/or comp with my SAT scores.

Thanking you once again in anticipation.
    With Respects
    Pavan

    • You could get IT in NITK. Other choices are NIT-T and NIT-W (personally I like IIIT-A and MNNIT after the top 3 NITs (W, T, K)))

  32. I have scored 196o in sat, ….iam interested ece or cse in top 3 nits, what are the chances i want to know. and let me know how was mnit for girs. your information will help us . …. thank you very much sir.

    • NIT-W could be a possibility (though less likely) for your score of 1960 forECE/CSE. MNIT (I assume Jaipur) is a good college for girls as sometime back I met one of such person- no issues.

  33. Dear Sir,
I have scored 1970 in SAT.I have seen the last year cutoff and current year expected cutoff.I am interested in IT in NITK.Do I stand any chance of getting my branch or should I go ahead with a private institution (VIT) as I have to immediately do the full payment.
    Thanking you
    Pavan

    • No one can really predict future but could only take a fair call with regard to actual cut-off for DASA 2011. There would be many good choices even for 1970 score, however, I am bit surprised that you do not have any fallback NIT as an option to NITK. It is really difficult to understand personal preferences but I personally would not go to VIT when I have a good option in the top 3 NITs.

      • I have seen the last year cut-offs and your expected cut-off spread sheet. My son has, after May 2011 SAT, increased his score to 2080.
First preference is NITK and then NIT Nagpur and NIT Surat. Having read about the uncertainty of the cut-offs this year due to the stiff hike in the DASA fees, do you think he has a chance at NIT K Mechanical.
I assume that NIT Nagpur should not be a problem and NIT Surat is a confirmed seat. Can u comment on this.
My son has a decent chance of getting in to College of engineering Pune and NIRMA Ahmedabad.
Could u give me your order of preference between NITK, NIT Nagpur, NIT Surat, COEP Pune and NIRMA Ahd.
At a score of 2080, shoud I keep an additional confirmed seat from any other college.
        Regards
        Atul

        • For 2080 score NITK looks difficult. You would get the seat in other choices without any doubt- no need to waste money in keeping a confirmed seat. However, please do send me some sweets when you get admission to NIT-N or S 🙂
There is not much to choose between NIT-N and S -it all depends where you feel more convenient.

  34. sir,
i have got a sat 2 score of 2210 will be good enuf to get mechanical engeneering in any of the top nit’s.

  35. if i want to send my previous(january) sat score to nitk, after watching my june sat score. how long it will take time or is it better to send the previous score now itself. whats your opinion regarding this. ……….thank you very much sir.

    • You can send the Jan score now itself. In case of score improvement in June, DASA would consider the best subject scores out of all attempts.

  36. sir,i wana do engineering bt i havent completed my 11 n 12 courses in a better way.physics n math in this both subject i have some weekness, sir should i do enginering ,faculty i wana do is civil, sir plz help me ,,,wat should i do ,,can i join any pvt college or i should hav to wait………..plz rply me

    • Please gather your confidence and make a positive move- the main thing is to commit yourself 100% with no half measures, work harder than you have done before. Try this and you would find success.

  37. I scored 2310 in my SAT .
I applied for SAT June 4,2011 expecting improvement in score.
I am preferring computer science or Mechanical in Suratkal.
Is it advisable to write June exam or this score is enough?

      • Sir
My son is also giving june 4th exam The results for it takes 21 days The scores should reach surathkal by 29th . Will June scores reach by then? How was it last year & when did NITK receive June scores

        • Last year the deadline was first week of July to receive SAT scores. I think there was a problem in giving June SAT test in Oman and finally date was moved to 10 July. You can check with NIT-K but I don’t see any problem with the dates.

  38. Sir,
While filling the online form the sat registration numbers are asking. They are telling they provide the provision of filling upto 3 sat registration. But I can enter only one. Please give a solution to this. Is there any problem if we give only one if we have to give another tests with individual better score?
    Abd Jaleel

  39. Mr.Raj,

Can you pl. advise which one is better between DAIICT, Gujarat and College of Engineering, Guindly, Chennai.

    Thanks

  40. Hi,i have scored 2200 in sat 2 and 92%in 12th boards, do i hv any chances of getting mechanical engeneering in nit trichi, nit surtkal or nit warangal?

  41. Sir,

I can get admission to NITK and ANNA UNIVERSITY, because my SAT and CBSE scores are very good.
But my main interest is in medicine, I took AFMC exam this time without any coaching and i cleared it, but i cannot get in because my eye power exceeds visual standards, also i cleared AIPMT preliminary exam, without coaching with good score and am waiting for the result of MAINS.
Forgive me for being negative, but if i dont clear mains with good rank then i cannot go to desired college (MADRAS MEDICAL COLLEGE), but i want medicine and have very good aptidude for the subject.
Hence i am thinking of taking this year for coaching and then giving exam again.
    Your opinion please??
    ROHIT

    • My advice would be to pursue your core interests- even if it takes a year or two more than minimum. When you say you have interest in medicine (rather than Engg), back yourself up, commit 100% to your goal and I am sure success invariably comes with hardwork. Frankly you have done very well by qualifying for AFMC without much coaching assistance. From the region I come from (Delhi), people don’t even blink their eyes before deciding I am dropping an year to improve my rankings (however it is no easy path, but this is how the competition is being won as on date)

  42. I scored 2340 in my SAT.
    I have selected EEE/ECE/Mech/Metalurgy.
    Which one I will get?
Is NITK is good for EEE/ECE/Mech?

    Thanks.

  43. Sir,
I am NRI and completed 12th CBSE and wrote SAT.
Scored well in both. Can get a seat in NITK.
But i am not interested in EEE or Mechanical or any engineering involving physics and maths mainly.
But i am interested in mining eng as i think it has mostly chemistry and physics. But my dad says that for this course NITK is not good. Hence it is unwise decision. What in your opinion sir do you think??.

    Thanks.
    Rohit

    • For Mining Engg, best courses are offered by ISM, IIT-Kharagpur and BHU-IT. Personally, I would take Mining Engg when I am left with no other Engg Branch due to postings in remote areas and un-glamarous nature of work. However, do more research and fine-tune what you want out of your career.

  44. Hi,

    a) How would you rate IIIT-H, NIT-K, NIT-T, NIT-W and DTU in the order of preference for Computer Engineering branch with currently known education standards/coaching levels + placements. How is the hostel life for NRI students in these institutes – would they be able to cope up?
    b) We heard IIIT-H and NIT-W are not much preferred by NRI’s because of ongoing Telengana issue – is this correct? Would this affect education in any way?

    Thanx

    Ramesh

    • IIIT-H>DTU>NIT-W>NIT-T>NIT-K (per AIEEE pref- for other rankings, have a look at India Today and Outlook rankings). IIIT-H is the best AIEEE institute.Would not like to comment on Telangana, the bottomline is that the security perceptions are different in each case.

  45. Dear Sir,

Kindly let me know medical certificate from home country (overseas )is mandatory for NRI Student for DASA admission. And is there any format available

    • I admitted my daughter in NITT last year . There was no fuss. They conducted the medical fitness test in the college hospital itself after admission. It was quite easy.

  46. Sir ,
I got 94% and SAT score ecpecting above 2000. Is there any chance to get in Warangal computer science branch

    • Going by your CBSE marks, you had plenty of scope to improve SAT marks. Yes, you could get NITW with your score- hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

  47. Mr Raj how is NIT Goa? As it is mentored by NITK, will it have similar standards?MNNT, Allahabd can be better option?
    Pardip

  48. sir,
My name is adhithya babu, Iam an nri student in abudhabi having just passed out of grade 12 and have also recently given my sat (subject tests) and am awaiting my results .

I am eager to know as to which of the 4 NIT’s in the south have the best mechanical engineering faculty( my question is not placement driven but on the basis of quality of faculty/teaching).
I eagerly await your reply sir.
    thank you.
