DASA/NRI Engg admissions- Discussion

Update: 2 July 2011

The minimum SAT2 score requirement of 1800 could be relaxed to 1440 during spot admission. Those applicants who have taken admissions in private colleges due to minm SAT2 score requirement have a big opportunity to get admissions to NITs as NIT brand is highly recognised in India and abroad.

Update: 1 July 2011

DASA-2011 1st Merit List has been declared today. Hearty Congratulations to all those who got their preferred branch and the college :).

Please find below the list

DASA-2011-1ST-Merit-List

Following is the actual SAT2 Cut-off for various branches and colleges

DASA-Cut-off-College-Branch-actual

The key highlights of DASA scheme merit list year are

1) Mechanical branch was the most popular branch going by the cut-offs, followed by ECE and CSE. Out of top 100 applicants, 33 opted for Mechanical, 21 for ECE and 25 for Computers.

2) NITK was the most popular college. Following is the number of DASA scheme toppers selecting this institute:8 out of 10, 15 out of 20, 34 out of 50 and 58 out of first 100 toppers selecting NITK.

3) NITK (58 out of top 100) was followed up by NIT-Trichy (18 toppers out of 100), NIT-W (8 out of 100) and PEC & NIT-C getting 7 toppers each out of 100 toppers. We have been consistent in giving this ranking on this blog. Last year (2010), the break of college-wise preference of top 100 applicants was as following: NITK (37), NIT-T: 23, NIT-W:14, NIT-C: 10 and PEC:9.

Leaving aside cut-off scores, following is the break-up of applicants for DASA2011: NITK: 90 applicants, NIT-T:75, NIT-C: 65, NITW:62, PEC: 40, MNNIT-Allahabad: 31, SVNIT-Surat:23, MNIT-Jaipur: 20, VNIT-Nagpur: 15 applicants.

4) Due to steep fee hike in DASA scheme, less applicants have selected DASA scheme this year, many opting for other govt/private colleges. This is evident by number of students opting for DASA scheme has come down by about 15% in the category of those getting more than 1800 SAT2 score as compared to last year.

My apologies to all those parents/students whose querries I could not respond in last week due to minor injury I had on my wrist.

Update: 23 Nov 2010

I have been receiving quite a few queries on how to improve the SAT2 scores (some candidates have taken 1st SAT 2 attempt in Oct/Nov and are not quite satisfied with their efforts). The general thread of the queries is that the candidates are getting about 700 scores (out of 800) in the subject and how to improve the score by about 50 points in each subject so that the total SAT 2 score can reach to around 2250 from 2100. In fact, this jump in scores can dramatically improve the college/branch one can get.

Before I start with any other advice on the subject- I would say there is no short cut or substitute to hard work and well rounded preparation. Having said that, there is always scope for smart strategies that are used by corporates to focus on the big picture. So following should help students as well:

1) Follow Rule of 80:20 (Parato Principle): The Pareto principle, the law of the vital few states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Therefore, 20% people/countries own 80% of world’s wealth (think of G20 countries having 84% of world GDP). 20% of components in a car are responsible for 80% of cars stuck on the road (ever wondered they are the same culprits: battery, empty tank, tyre, spark plug and radiator water), 20% students of any school/college are responsible for 80% of the problems 🙂 .

To cut the long story short, 20% of the weak areas on the given subject are responsible for 80% of the incorrect answers- so find out those 20% problematic areas and you can eliminate 80% of errors. These 20% weak areas could be related to subject theory, silly calculation mistakes, not reading the question correctly and what is being asked etc-etc. I have learnt the hard way during my certification days (Sun Java, PMP, Value Engg and others) that most mistakes for me were not related to lack of technical knowledge but related to not understanding the question itself-as to what is actually being asked in the question. So grab some sets of SAT 2 Mock Tests, solve one set of mock tests-identify your weak areas (many SAT 2 books/mock tests are available in the market and online). First, list down the weak areas and improve those areas before attempting any more mock tests. Then grab another set of SAT 2 mock tests, and apply new understanding and learning. Just follow the iteration a couple of times and believe me you can improve your scores dramatically by studying smartly, efficiently and in shortest possible time (by just concentrating on 20% weak area)

2) Just follow my another article on How to Solve MCQ Questions (the article has been published in many magazines.) Since SAT 2 is a multiple choice exam, below link should also help greatly

Update:16 Oct 2010

I have received an email from the concerned authority in NIT-K noting that advance info on DASA 2011-12 has been posted at

http://www.dasanit.org/

Candidates interested in seeking admission in undergraduate engineering programmes in India are requested to take note of important details. Compared to DASA 2010-11, there are several changes in terms of eligibility requirements, fee structure, participating institutions, process etc.

The key changes being 1) Minimum SAT2 score of 1800 2) NIT-K having obtained a code number from Collegeboard for automatic SAT 2 score submissions, 3) Fee is proposed to be increased to $7000 (from $4000 earlier), subject to approval from ministry.

Update: 12 July 2010

Finally, DASA merit list has been published. We wish all the best to the blog visitors and wish them a great career. Live and enjoy each day of your college life butdon’t ignore your studies. DASA candidates need to put that extra effort to sail thru the studies as compared to AIEEE candidates.

We are in the process of collecting some useful ebooks and question bank for 1st semestercandidates to help them keep track of their studies and not lose sight of it.We would provide the link of the study material within one week to all blog readers as complimenray gift for visiting this board and helping each other. There is no need to provide your SAT2 scores as same has been noted in the merit list.

SAT II Subject Tests: Everything About It
Choosing Between Electronics and Computers Branches

1) College Preference by NRIs

Question: Should I choose Engg Branch vs. Top College

Answer: Select the best college for your rank- but dont compromise on your branch. The best way is to first choose your preferred branch in top 30-40 colleges. If the rank is not good, try to get your second best branch selection in top 30-40 colleges. Try not to do engg from a college not in top 50 engg colleges of India. Preferably, select a college not by its location/metro but the overall rank of the college.

Following is a list of NITs most preffered by NRIs (in descending order of competition) during 2009. Please note that this list is skewed heavily towards south India NITs (for e.g .NIT-Calicut is preferred over NIT Warangalbecause of regional background of applicants)

1) NIT Surathkal
2) NIT Trichy
3) NIT Calicut
4) NIT Warangal
5) PEC Chandigarh
6) MNNIT Allahabad
Following NITs also see some demand from NRIs(but notsimilar heavy demand as for above listed colleges-it doesnt mean they are inferior in any respect)

7) MNIT-Jaipur/IIIT- Allah/NIT-Kuru/ NIT-Bhopal/NIT-Nagpur/NIT-Rourkela

Additionally, following are the ranking of Indian Engg Institutes

India Today Ranking of Top 25 Engg Institutes
Ranking of Top 100 Engg Colleges

Private Colleges

1) PSG College of Technology Coimbatore
2) Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
3) Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology Patiala
4) Vellore Institute of Technology Vellore
5) RV College of Engineering Bangalore
6) Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Infocom Technology Ghadhinagar
7) Manipal Institute of Technology Manipal

2) Branch Preference

Question: What branch is best?
Answer:
Normally people choose branches based on their ‘scope’ (i.e. career potential) rather than their interests. However, there is there is no one in this world who can predict which branch will be best employable four years down the lane. There is simply no way you can predict that. So what is the solution? Go by your gut feeling. There is nothing called a good branch and nothing called a bad branch. A good guy in a bad branch is much more employable than a bad guy in a (so called) good branch. If you have the love towards a subject, then go for it. If you dont know your interests, one can follow the rat race by following in the footsteps of last years branch preferences by successful candidates. In the end, one can achieve anything in spite/irrespective of his educational background
(Please refer below link to understand how AIEEE candidates selected their colleges and branches. The College selection by NRIs have been slightly different from AIEEE candidates as listed above but branch selection by NRIs has been in tune with AIEEE candidates.)

http://aieee.nic.in/ccb2009/ORCR09/Engineering/Eng/orcr.htm)

1) Electronics
2) Computers
3) Electrical and Electronics
4) Mechanical
5) Information Technology
6) Instrument and Control
7) Chemical
8) Civil
9) Production
10) Metallurgy
11) Biotech

3) Pay Packages for branches

Refer below link to get an idea of branch-wise salary package in NIT-Warangal

http://www.myengg.com/engg/placements/2009/nit-warangal-placements.php

However, if someone plans to lookout for jobs in US, following link provides the highest starting salaries based on the degrees. Without doubt 8 of 10 top degrees are Engg and Chemical is high flying branch (though aerospace is listed top branch, but I understand there are some restrictions for non-US citizens for the branch. Similarly, Petroleum Engg, was considered best branch with a starting salary of $85K in a separate survey)

4) How to become a successful engineer

Finally, for all those who are about to start their journey to become a successful engineer, please do go through below excellent presentation

How To Be A Successful Engineer

Feel free to post any advices you wish to give to prospective students, or to post your questions here if you are still in doubt. [Kindly Do not ask questions like is branch/college ABC is better than A1B1C1?)

Regarding SAT II scores for DASA admissions, there is no precedence for admissions to NITs with SAT II scores and therefore, it would not be easy to know where one stands in the crowd. Boarders can certainly share their SAT II scores (alongwith CBSE XII PCM %) to gauge water. By the way, one can submit the best subject scores from 2 dates if giving exams on both 1 May and 5 June (eg. submit physics and Maths scores from 1 May and chemistry from 5 June , if those scores are best).

Many parents have sent their SAT II scores to me asking if they are good enough. Since there is no such precedence of the co-relation between the marks and NIT/branch, it is really difficult for me to answer. However, I can make out that May 1, 2010 SAT test has been pretty tough and scores are not in high 2300 (I have heard from inner circles of SAT training centres that May SAT 2 tests are normally tough). If people really would like to know where they stand, they have this board where the scores could be shared for better understanding of the subject.

  1. sir,

i have got a score of 168.5 out of 200 in my cbse exams… what are my chances of getting a seat in guindy engineerring through dasa quota?

  2. Dear Sir
I have scored 2380 in SAT. I also cleared Vellore Institute of Technology(rank 4809) and Manipal (MIT Rank 278) Engineering Entrance. I want to go for Mechanical Engineering.Because of the high fees of DASA, I prefer to go to either Manipal or VIT. Manipal is offering 100% freeship & VIT fee is 100,000/-.Pls advise me which college is better.
    Thanks

  3. Hello sir! I have got 2350 on my SAT subject tests and want to do CSE. Which NIT is better for this(Surathkal or Trichy)? Kindly elaborate based on faculty and quality of placements. Also, does CSE offer any advantage over EEE or ECE(because most of the people I know recommend ECE but I want to do CSE)?

    • For rankings, please see India Today or Outlook latest rankings (also available on this blog). Branch is very individual choice, North Indian colleges see rush for CSE and South Indian colleges see rush for ECE.

  4. Dear Sir,
Could you please tell me the SAT2 score required for MNNIT- Allahabad. or if you could give me a approx score. i want to pursue Computer science or IT. Mainly Comp. Sc.
what is the score that they require?

    Thank you.

  5. Dear Sir, My son Rohit applied thru DASA 2011 scheme. He hase chosen EEE,Mechanical and Mining in the order 1,2,3. Now after submission he says he is interested in Mining first than EEE and Mechanical.
    1. IS it possible to edit the form after submission?
    2. Is Mining has any good scope??

    Thanks.
    Ganesh

    • If your son has specific interest in Mining, we would not suggest to change the mind. While the best course of action would be to contact DASA auth for possibility of change in priority, one possible option would be not to accept the choice in the first list and apply for re-allocation in the second list (it could be possible as some mining branch applicants would certainly try for branch improvement as mining is not high in demand).
Mining is also in demand by mineral resource cos like Hindalco, Sterlite, CIL and others however, be ready for postings in remote parts of India/world.

  6. Sir,

Will Dasa authorities consider Sat2 score of less than 1800 during the spot admission.
    Your advise/opinion is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Keshav

    • As per present rules, 1800 is minimum. However, it cannot be ruled-out that some of the institute could accept lower scores at future date- however, it is like predicting which way the stock market would go.

  7. Dear Raj
Is there a way to ensure that the SAT2 score has been received by NITK? OR
The report on college boards confirming that the scores have been sent to NITK, is enough.
Any updates on the SAT2 scores trends would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Atul P

    • CollegeBoard has a robust process of sending the scores to the registered institutes (like NIT-K). Beyond this, you could also try checking with NITK since I am pretty impressed by their administration handling DASA scheme (do give credit when and where it belongs). Many bloggers won’t know that I keep receiving their useful alerts and even replies to the queries from NITK on this blog.
This year SAT2 score cut-off could make a slight dip than earlier anticipated because of steep fee hike (75% hike) and quite a many students getting AIEEE ranks would prefer to join merit seats by compromising on branch/college.

    • What Sriniketahan has said is correct .Also, embassies or high commissions don’t issue certificates in student’s or dependent’s name. They only issue the certificate in the name of the person who is working in that particular country. If you have both, it is more than sufficient.

  8. Sir,

Dasa has asked for the documentary evidences for residential requirement. My father has already taken the NRI certificate from Saudi Indian embassy. So do i need to take the NRI certificate separately for myself?

      • I had asked the same doubts with the NITK officials, they promptly replied me with the following:
“documentary evidence for residential requirement is only for foreign nationals.

        regards
        DASA cell”

  9. respected sir,
i am applying for b tech under dasa scheme 2011 and have already appeared for sat2 and my score was quite satisfactory.I have a confusion in choosing a right college for b tech in ECE.Right now i am opting for IIIT,allahabad as my cousin is pursuing her M tech in ECE there but i would like to know about other NIT colleges for ECE apart and better than IIIT, allahabad.
    thanking you,
    aquish

    • IIIT-Allahabad is a specialist govt intitute for IT education and does provide quality education not only for BTech but MTech and PhD as well. It is comparatively a new college and is rising in ranks with every year. However, there are higher ranked colleges per AIEEE qualified students such as NIT, K, NIT-T, NIT-W, NIT-A.

  10. Sir,

I wanted to get some information about instrumentation and control engineering and is this branch good for girls?
Or is it so that ECE and CSE is always the best for girls.

    Pratiksha

    • Frankly, on this forum we do not advocate any particular branch or college for girls. We keep repeating, it all depends on the individual upbringing, attitude and social fabric at native’s hometown. We can only say that 25 years back, we had boys and girls both doing mech, chem and all other branches apart from popular circuit branches.

  11. Dear Sir,

In dasa application form, my photo is not getting downloaded. Although the type in JPEG and the size is less than 1MB, it is not getting loaded .And without that i cant even fill my apllication form.
    What can be the reason.

    • I have heard this issue from a parent. He had talked to NIT-K and I think at that time they asked to send the photo by email so that they can resolve it. Bottomline- for any such issue, contact NIT-K without hesitation. They are pretty efficient admin.

      • hai……. while filling the dasa application we too face the same problem, we sent the photo by email to nitK.and nitK admin helped us. hopes this information may helps you in this regard.

      • Yeah, I am also facing the same problem and wrote to them attaching a photograph few days back. But so far nothing is being doen and I am unable to complete the application form. It is surprising that after so many days NITK is not able to correct this problem on their web site for DASA.

    • Even I had the same problem. I sent en email to DASA and attatched my photo to it. They uploaded it for me.

  12. Please rate the institute considering all the relevant factors for an avg.student: MNIT Allahabad,BIT Mesra,Thapar Patiala & HBTI.

    Regards
    Manoj

    • MNIT-A>BIT-Mesra>Thapar>HBTI. In case of doubt, please try finding latest ranking of India Today or Outlook.

  13. Sir-Given a choice between DTU(earlierDCE),NSIT(earlier DIT),NITK,IIIT-Hyderabd,BITS Goa-which order of preference-one can choose for same engineering branch

    • The answer to the query mainly lies in the cut-off rank in AIEEE.
      IIIT-Hyd>NSIT=>DTU>NIT-K>BITS-G

      • Dear Sir,

        1) Where can we see the “Engineering colleges (NIT & IIIT) ranked in the order of preference by AIEEE students”?
        2) What would be your ranking of these colleges for students who wish to pursue Computer Engineering?
        Thanks,

        Sam

      • Sir,

        1. With ongoing Telengana agitation which does not seem to be sorted out in the next few years, is there any risk in joining IIIT-H? In this case, should we prefer NIT-K or NIT-T over IIIT-H?
        2. How is IIIT-H placed when compared to IIIT-A, NIT-K and NIT-T for Computer Engineering?
        Thanks,

        Krishna

        • IIIT-Hyd is the best AIEEE institute. Full stop.
Though I am no expert in AP politics wrt to Telangana agitation, I think people have learnt to live with it- and it is possible that the right political people have been ‘bought over’ by the concerned industrialists- so the issue looks to be quite silent for all practical purposes. However, do your due diligence at ground level before selecting any college.

    • sir
THe NRI selection process for guindy college of engg chennai is on 19th june (payment of fees) Results for Dasa however is on 1st july . What portion of fees will be returned if I prefer to join NITs over Guindy?

      • Most private colleges would try to finish admissions before major exam (eg AIEEE) couselling. I don’t feel there is any need to go to any private college if one has got good marks in SAT2 under DASA.

  14. Sir,
I recently gave my CBSE board exams in march. My expectations are:
    English : 70-75
    Maths : 82-87
    Physics : 56-58
    chemistry: 60-65
    computers: 65-70
    aggregate: 333-355 (67%-71%)
    PCM : 198-210 (66%-70%)
Can I apply through DASA despite of my low Physics marks and possibly Chemistry marks despite of an average of around 70%? I have already written my SAT the first time and secured 1820..

  15. Sir,
In the brochure it is mentioned that along with application and other documents, we should enclose plus two mark list copy. So for the students who just appeared only this march, how can they apply before the result comes? Result will come only at the end of may and last date of DASA is june 15. Please clarify this.

    • We did it last year, and I hope its the same way this year too. You can fill online application form anytime before 15th June. You can update online with SAT Score and Plus2 marks after the results published. If you have already filled the online form, and have not yet sent the application, after updating and uploading the cbse website mark sheet attested, and can send it along with application.

If you have sent the application already, you can send the mark sheet separately,to NITK by speedpost.

  16. 2140 score for NITW-Mech looks to be a boundary line case. To get some idea about most sought after colleges, please see the pdf file with expected cut-off marks for various colleges(link in the main article above)- higher the cut-off marks- larger the demand by DASA applicants.

  17. Sir,

What would be the right time for a newly admitted student at NIT for Computer Engineering(at Trichy/Surathkal/Calicut and staying at college hostel) to have a Laptop (i.e.) is a Laptop required as soon as joining NIT or would it be good enough after say 6 months / 1 year… Request your advise.
    Thanks in advance.

    James

    • Only very few colleges ask to get a laptop in the first semester. Most of NITs expect it from 2nd Sem only. However, buying an affordable laptop (not expensive) could be considered (internet has become a part of us anyway) such that even if lost not a big hole (some of the boys hostel does not provide good safety for such gadgets). Many of the hostels have internet in rooms.

  18. Sir,

Do you have any information on SAT cut off score for admisison to B.Tech at NMIMS – Mumbai (Mukesh Patel school)

    Thanks

  19. Dear Sir,
Can you kindly suggest some best books to prepare for SAT2 (Physics, Chemistry and Math Level 2) exams?
Your suggestions are greatly valued. Thanks for the good work you are doing. Regards,
    Bharathi.

  20. Hi,

I did all my studies (LKG to X1 std) abroad, and is currently pursuing my XII std in India. I am still NRI and my parents are NRIs. Am I eligible for DASA / NRI Engg. admission. Would highly appreciate responding to my query.

    Regards,
    Sivaraam.

    • Unfortunately you would not be eligible for DASA as it requires XI/XII from abroad apart from 3 years out of last 6 years abroad.

  21. Sir,
my son got 1700 in Sat 2 score, and looking for electronics & communications or electrical @ MNIT Jaipur.

Could you please tell me if it would be possible for him to get into MNIT Jaipur with this marks? Or should he write SAT again?

    • DASA scheme has set minimum SAT score of 1800. So, your son would need to meet this criteria to be eligible.

  22. Sir,
What are the opportunities for civil engineering nowadays? Is it worth studying civil engineering in DASA scheme considering the huge hike in fee? is there any campus selections taking place? And is this branch of engineering better for girls? Among EEE, civil which is good for girls? Waiting for your valuable suggetion.

    • Civil engg has taken-off in last few years in India due to infra/metro/skyscrapers we see all around. It is another question if it is a good branch for girls as I do not distingiush much. If it could be good for boys- why not for girls. 25 years back, we had girl batchmates in civil engg.

  23. Dear Raj,
My son scored 2340 in SAT2 and is not going to improve further due to other entrance exams. He prefers a college apart from studies wants to involve in extra curricular activities like band, music festival etc since he is more interseted in music also.

would you like to suggest on this?

    Thanks.

    • All top NITs have ample and vibrant music clubs and extra-curr actv. So would suggest to choose the college based on college rankings.

  24. Sir,

Thank you very much for wonderful service you are providing to NRI’s. My query is whether a student can apply under both General Category with AIR of AIEEE and under DASA scheme as well if he unsure of securing the seat in NIT under AIEEE ranking.

    • AIEEE and DASA are mutually exclusive. One can apply for both and if lucky to get a good AIEE rank, choose AIEEE.

  25. Dear Sir

Can u please brief us on the Branch Selection ECE/EEE as weighed against Mechanical, in terms of future scope in India/abroad, placement opportunities and degree of difficulty during the course! I am sure a lot of students / parents do face dilemma in deciding the branch (provided they have an option, which is forutnately there for the DASA students) as most of the crowd goes with MECH as the first choice.
Your input would really help everyone in filling up the DASA preferences, starting 1st April

    Regards
    Atul

    • I do not agree with the statement “as most of the crowd goes with MECH as the first choice.”. To really check for branch selection/preference, please refer to cut-off of various branches as selected by AIEEE qualified candidates. Search for AIEEE official site on google. ECE tops in South India and Computers in North India

  26. My son has secured 1890 in Sat II, and is trying to improve during May 2011 SAtII. is it possible to get any branch in NITK, or NITC with the SAT score?

  27. Sir,
Which is the best NIT for Civil Engineering considering faculty & placement?. How is Calicut NIT for Civil?

    • The surveys done by Outlook/IndiaToday look at all the factors such as placements and infra and basis that NIT-T/W/K are the best 3. No survey tracks the branch-wise ranking, however AIEEE pref by qualified candidates shows that the higher ranked NITs are also ranked higher for same branch.

    • “candidates must have secured a minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks or 6.75 CGPA on a 10 point scale or equivalent grades in the qualifying examination.”
So 60% requirement is only aggregate , not individual subject.

  28. Sir,
Thank you for your prompt response to my previous query. My son is considerig PSG Tech as one of his choices. I would like to know on what basis(which exam rank/marks) the admissions take place there. Also, how is the college rated?

    • For getting NRI seats, there is no need to appear for any exam (other than SAT2 for DASA). PSG Tech is rated amongst top 25. For specific admission query, would suggest to contact to college directly (if it is not late already)

  29. Dear Sir,

Firstly on behalf of all NRI’s, let me thank you for the commendable job. Based on your experience, request your feedback on the following:
    1) For a student who is good in Maths, Physics & Computers, assuming that there is no specific personal preference, which of the engineering branch would you recommend (rank in the order of future career prospects) – Electronics or Computer or Electrical or IT. Also, please specify your rationale.
    2) For Computer Engineering, could you please rank the preferred NIT’s – Surathkal, Trichy and Calicut. How about DCE and what ranking would you give it?
    Thank you once again,

    • 1) Future potential of any branch would really be known in future only. For example, everyone felt 5-6 years back that Biotech has greatest future, and I agree with it. However, in Biotech field not many great careers (quantity and quality) have come in corporate world in all these years, like IT field. If future means 20-25 years than I would not join that bandwagon. Personally I like Computers branch and have written a separate post on that but that doesn’t mean everyone should follow this. Only top 20-30% of CSE branch students go much higher than the other branches and balance 70-80% have to struggle with a big army (including diploma holders) for an opportunity.
      2) For me, DCE>NITK>NITT>NITC (though debatable and I provide this platform for other views on the topic)

      • Hi,

        a) How would you rank IIIT-H when put along with DCE, NITK, NITT & NITC? And, VIT as well.
        b) Also, we have heard people saying Electronics is better that Computers (for that matter even Electrical) – what’s you take on this?

        • A) IIIT-H is the best institute amongst participating in AIEEE- however, it is not part of DASA or any NRI quota. VIT is good for those (when compared to top 5 NITs) who want better hostel and lab facilities- though I would not personally choose it over top 5 NITs.
          2) I am entitled to have personal opinion that Computers is the best branch for the bright students. I have a separate post on this discussion on ECE vs CSE. I do respect other’s opinion if they like ECE , Elec or civil as the best branch.

  30. Dear Raj
You have been doing a fantastic job for such a long time. Thanks very much. I have been following your blog since last two years. My son is writing is 12th exam in March 2011. I have the following questions.

How is NIT surat ranked? I know NIT-K, NIT-W, NIT-T are ranked the top NITs.
My son has scored 2000 in SAT2 and would try to increase, but at 2000 (plus the home state advantage, i suppose it is there for DASA as in AIEEE), he would get NIT Surat rather comfortably. Hence the question.
At 2000 does he stand a chance in either EEE or Mech in any of the top NITs.
How do you rate NIRMA, Delhi College of Engineering, RV college of Engineering, College of Engineering Pune, as compared to NIT Surat?
I think my son will have to finally make a choice between NIT Surat and the options given above.

    Regards
    Atul

    • Thanks for following the blog for such a long time. I would request you to contribute to this once your son gets thru for feedback on the selected college.

NIT-Surat is one of the better managed NIT and certainly ranks in top 10 NITs. There is no home state quota for DASA unlike AIEEE. Out of the list of non-NITs you have given, I only like DCE as it is highly rated and placements are outstanding.NIT-Surat is much-better than the rest (NIRMA/RV/COE)

      • Dear Raj
I will be glad to contribute to this for sure. Thanks for the information. However, I would like to know the possibility of getting NIT Surat at the given score of 2000, although my son is sure of improving this by atleast a 100 points. But I am considering the worst case and hence the question. Your expected cut-off sheet doesnt indicate NIT surat precisely expected cut-offs. Any information you have on this. I have a case of last year where SAT2 score of 1500 got into NIT Surat, but this as you said, should not be the correct indication as last year was the first year of the SAT2 process for DASA. Preferred branch, as I said is EEE or Mech
        Appreciate your comments on this.

        • In the cut-off score sheet, i have noted that other branches/other colleges could be got with 1800 score. So your score is good enough for what you choose in NIT-S.

  31. dear sir,
i hav got a score of 1990 in the sat tests.. i would like to know whether i can get into NIT calicut for EEE??

  32. Sir,
We already sent automaticaaly the SAT II score of June to NITK. But my daughter will try to improve the score in May exam. My question is if we send different scores of one subject, do they take the highest among them?

  33. Dear Sir,

My son has scored 2090 in SAT exams and he wants to join in NIT – Trichy/Surathkal for Computer Sc. Could you please tell me if it would be possible for him to get into any of these two institutions for Comp. Sc with this marks? Is so, which institution? Or should he write SAT again?

Thank you Sir for all the help you have provided!!

    • With the given SAT marks (2090), the probability of getting NITK is quite low and NITT is a borderline case. Would recommend to improve the score by 50-60 points.

  34. Dear Sir,

A query regarding DASA admission 2011-12 below:
What will be the basis/criteria for admission in case there are several students with the same marks requesting the same college and branch. For e.g. there are 20 students with SAT II score of 2400 requesting admission to NIT-Trichy for Electronics & Communication branch and there are only 14 seats.

Also another scenario – what would be criteria, if there are 20 students with SAT score of 2350 requesting admission to NIT-Trichy for Electronics & Communication branch and there are only 10 seats left.

    Please advise. Thank you,

    Suresh

    • The situation has not happened in the past where 20 candidates are holding 2400 scores (or in the past CBSE score of say 97.6%) with only 14 seats in a particular college and same branch. NITK has no published policy for this hypothetical question. Personally I don’t think this scenerio is going to happen this year.Last year only 14 candidates got perfect score of 2400 and only 4 of them decided to go for same college and branch(NITK-ECE).
This year, I am expecting 30-40 candidates to get perfect score of 2400.
For the second query of 20 students stuck at same score for 10 seats, the marks in Maths, then physics and chemistry would be the decider.

  35. sir as per dasa scheme what are the chances for the students who get low scores like 1800 . is there any chances for them to get seat in any one of nits with their favorable branch. your description will help us more. thank you very much.

  36. sir As per dasa scheme last year it has announced approximately 2200 seats but they declared the first merit list appro.791 candidates only, did they filled up all remaining seats or not as the DASA QUOTA. i want to know this because if our wards get lower score thatmeans just above 1800, what are the chances. they still have any chance of getting seat in nits or not. thank you very much sir your suggetions are helping us lot.

    • Cannot say anything as to what would happen to SAT2 scores than than 1800 or to the seats remaining unfilled. This is the first time that the minm SAT2 score (1800) criteria is being applied.

    • My daughter got NIT-T last year through DASA. I feel , this year though the minimum cutoff is made 1800,and students have enough time to prepare for SAT2, still with just above 1800, you can get your prefered NIT,but may be not your 1-4 choice branch. This is only a guess, but I strongly feel that will be the case, as last year finally, around 35% DASA seats gone to AIEEE allotment.

  37. The candidate has to give 15 choices and seats would be given if they are not already cornered by higher SAT2 score candidates. (eg 1) NITK-ECE , 2) NITT- ECE and so on)

  38. sir what is the difficulty levels of ece and cse branches for the students who has completed their 12th standered with biotechnology. thankyou.

    • Engg is all about attitude for problem solving and commonsense. It really doesn’t matter what subjects you have taken in 12th (offcourse PCM in 12th is must)

  39. Dear Mr. Raj,

Do you have any idea of faculty, infrastructure , placement and hostel facility for girls at HBTI, Kanpur. Also, which is the best branch available at this institute?

    Regards
    Manoj Arora

    • I have all the good things for HBTI-Kanpur (good on reputation, placement, univ results however infra not great) and is the best college in UP (after taking out IIT-Kanpur and MNIT). Best branches that gets stampede are EC, CS and Mech (no second guesses). I have had no feedback on hostel so can’t help on that. It is a good choice for UPWalas who do not qualify for DASA since the reqmnt is only 2 years overseas and 5% seats are kept as NRI quota.

  40. sir in dasa scheme it hasbeen announced that the candidates who are selected must report to allotted institutes. approximately july20 to july30. that means candidates can report either any day of july20 to july30. please clarify. because it will take time to reach from one state to another state specially for nris. thankyou verymuch.

    • Your understanding is correct- the candidate can join any day between 20 July-30 July. However, a different date range may be given by different NITs, since the joining dates could differ by 7-10 days between the NITs (keep a close eye on the joining formality for the assigned NIT on their website since the dates from a particular NIT would take precedence)

      • My experience is that it is better to report early. Last year MNIT hostels full before 23 rd of July and all the DASA candidates whho reported after 24th couldn’t get hostel facility. Also one must keep some for exigencies.

  41. sir,My son is in 12th now and is an average student and easily funked by huge presure….do students who go through dasa cope up and do well with aieee students there or, do they face tremendous stress and it gets difficult for them…is it possible for him to achive a gud rank rank in aieee if he starts preparing from say today?

    • It is indeed a tough question for me to answer and would have loved this being answered by one of the student/parent who has gone thru this. The inputs I have is that the student can easily manage the pressure if he/she can be punctual with studies (the level of efforts given for CBSE 12th board exam) as lot of them start enjoying the first opportunity of real freedom in college.
For the 2nd query relating to cracking AIEEE, the best thing would be to go thru some national level test paper (for AIEEE) to gauge the water. Normally cracking AIEEE with good enough rank is a 2 years of genuine prep.

      • Students with >80% in 12th CBSC will find it alright to cope up with AIEEE students out there in NITs. As Raj rightly mentioned here, the student should concentrate in studies in the first year to avoid any carry over and it is well possible. The campus gives lot of freedom and it provocate vulnerable students to distract. What is your son’s strength level to withstand those temptations? There is no other stress to worry about.

      • I am a parent of NIT student who got thru DASA. She was outsatnding in plus2(above95%). So she competes with AIEEE students, very well. What I know from my observation is that, like nandanan said, if your child gets 80+ in exams, if he puts his effort, then he can do fairly good ,if he goes for branches except ECE/CS/EEE. He must just concentrate on studies thats all.

  42. Sir,
I would like to know where IIIT Allahabad ranks with nit surathkal and trichy.
It has only ECE but the website says it has 100% placement and is 8th best college in india. Also, what is the cut off score in SAT 2 for IIIT Allahabad?

    • IIIT-Allahabad ranking of 8th seems to be feaky one where quite a many colleges would not have participated (I guess that ranking of 8th was couple of years back). At the same time the college is ranked within top 25 in India. Would not like to compare IIIT-A with other NITs as it has only 2 branches (IT and ECE) and is a specialist college for IT. Personally I would not leave NIT-K ot T to get same branch in IIIT-A, however if Iam getting a biotech/Metallurgy type branch in NIT-K/T , I would surely opt for IIIT-A

  43. Sir,
What is your valuable suggetion of taking civil engineering in NIT calicut for my daughter and also computer science. ECE is tough to get with her scores and she not likes Ele&Electronics.
    Thank you, Asha

  44. Dear sir,
i had taken da sat 2 tests, each subjects individualy and my total score has come up to 2250..i would like to know whether this score wil be gud enuf for mech in nit calicut..i knw tat the cut of is 2140..but still as it may fluctuate, jus wntd to knw wheter it iam in da safer side,or do i need to improve my scores..my individual scores are chem-760 maths-730 and phy-760..i hav registerd 4 maths in may,jus to try whether i cn improve ma score..i just wntd to know whether my existing scores are gud enuf for mech in nit calicut.
    thank u.
    regards.
    vinay

    • “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst”. We have heard this adage from our school days and it has become quite an important tool even in my current responsibility as a project manager- where we can’t leave anything to chances and have to have all risk assessment done at planning stage.
In Olympics, there are years when you break the existing world record and still don’t get a medal- something Milkha Singh knows better than anyone else.
So quetion for you to ask should be- are you OK if you don’t get Mech in NITC. Or would you be glad if you could get something better (say ECE or any other interesting branch to you) in the best college if you could improve your score.
      All the best.

  45. Sir,
I would like to know where IIIT Allahabad ranks with nit suratkal and trichy.
It has only ECE but the website says it has 100% placement. Also, what is the cut off score in SAT 2 for IIIT Allahabad?

  46. Sir,
My daughter scored 2100 in jan SAT II exam. What is her chance of getting ECE in NIT Calicut, as the cut off mark you listed out is 2150. How is Electrical & Electronincs? We are from kerala so preference is NIT Calicut.

    Thank you, Asha

    • You do have some probability to get in ECE- NITC. The table for cut-off is only indicative and coulld go 50-60 points both sides easily, depending on the preference and student pool of that year. EEE is also a good branch, however, it is one of those tough engg branch and not suitable for everyone.

  47. Sir,i am looking for joining my son and daughter into the north NITs in order of preference MNNIT-allahbad,IIIT-allahbad and then NIT-kurukshetra. But some have suggested me to not consider MNNIT-allahbad and even you have written in your previous answer that nri dont prefer it much.Is there actually some valid reason for that?

    • MNIT-Allahabad is ranked 4th amongst NITs by AIEEE candiates when selecting the college during AIEEE counselling (after NIT-Warrangal, Trichy, Surathkal). At the same time going by the preference of NRIs in selecting the colleges under DASA, it is not ranked in atleast top 5 (not my view but NRI preference since last 3 years I have been tracking).Frankly many NRIs don’t select the best college but prefer colleges in metros, good connectivity, hostel food and many factors that are non-academic (such as McD on the college gate and a cheapest & direct flight from Dubai).
If anyone has any interest in studying cyber crime in IT, there is no better college than IIIT-Allahabad where even PHD is offered in the subject. I need not to repeat myself that most of the ME NRIs belong to a particular southern state and would prefer a college which is nearby.
The bottomline is that all individuals are different and take their decisions differently.
