DASA/NRI Engg admissions- Discussion
Update: 2 July 2011
The minimum SAT2 score requirement of 1800 could be relaxed to 1440 during spot admission. Those applicants who have taken admissions in private colleges due to minm SAT2 score requirement have a big opportunity to get admissions to NITs as NIT brand is highly recognised in India and abroad.
Update: 1 July 2011
DASA-2011 1st Merit List has been declared today. Hearty Congratulations to all those who got their preferred branch and the college :).
Please find below the list
Following is the actual SAT2 Cut-off for various branches and colleges
DASA-Cut-off-College-Branch-actual
The key highlights of DASA scheme merit list year are
1) Mechanical branch was the most popular branch going by the cut-offs, followed by ECE and CSE. Out of top 100 applicants, 33 opted for Mechanical, 21 for ECE and 25 for Computers.
2) NITK was the most popular college. Following is the number of DASA scheme toppers selecting this institute:8 out of 10, 15 out of 20, 34 out of 50 and 58 out of first 100 toppers selecting NITK.
3) NITK (58 out of top 100) was followed up by NIT-Trichy (18 toppers out of 100), NIT-W (8 out of 100) and PEC & NIT-C getting 7 toppers each out of 100 toppers. We have been consistent in giving this ranking on this blog. Last year (2010), the break of college-wise preference of top 100 applicants was as following: NITK (37), NIT-T: 23, NIT-W:14, NIT-C: 10 and PEC:9.
Leaving aside cut-off scores, following is the break-up of applicants for DASA2011: NITK: 90 applicants, NIT-T:75, NIT-C: 65, NITW:62, PEC: 40, MNNIT-Allahabad: 31, SVNIT-Surat:23, MNIT-Jaipur: 20, VNIT-Nagpur: 15 applicants.
4) Due to steep fee hike in DASA scheme, less applicants have selected DASA scheme this year, many opting for other govt/private colleges. This is evident by number of students opting for DASA scheme has come down by about 15% in the category of those getting more than 1800 SAT2 score as compared to last year.
My apologies to all those parents/students whose querries I could not respond in last week due to minor injury I had on my wrist.

Update: 23 Nov 2010
I have been receiving quite a few queries on how to improve the SAT2 scores (some candidates have taken 1st SAT 2 attempt in Oct/Nov and are not quite satisfied with their efforts). The general thread of the queries is that the candidates are getting about 700 scores (out of 800) in the subject and how to improve the score by about 50 points in each subject so that the total SAT 2 score can reach to around 2250 from 2100. In fact, this jump in scores can dramatically improve the college/branch one can get.
Before I start with any other advice on the subject- I would say there is no short cut or substitute to hard work and well rounded preparation. Having said that, there is always scope for smart strategies that are used by corporates to focus on the big picture. So following should help students as well:
1) Follow Rule of 80:20 (Parato Principle): The Pareto principle, the law of the vital few states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Therefore, 20% people/countries own 80% of world’s wealth (think of G20 countries having 84% of world GDP). 20% of components in a car are responsible for 80% of cars stuck on the road (ever wondered they are the same culprits: battery, empty tank, tyre, spark plug and radiator water), 20% students of any school/college are responsible for 80% of the problems 🙂 .
To cut the long story short, 20% of the weak areas on the given subject are responsible for 80% of the incorrect answers- so find out those 20% problematic areas and you can eliminate 80% of errors. These 20% weak areas could be related to subject theory, silly calculation mistakes, not reading the question correctly and what is being asked etc-etc. I have learnt the hard way during my certification days (Sun Java, PMP, Value Engg and others) that most mistakes for me were not related to lack of technical knowledge but related to not understanding the question itself-as to what is actually being asked in the question. So grab some sets of SAT 2 Mock Tests, solve one set of mock tests-identify your weak areas (many SAT 2 books/mock tests are available in the market and online). First, list down the weak areas and improve those areas before attempting any more mock tests. Then grab another set of SAT 2 mock tests, and apply new understanding and learning. Just follow the iteration a couple of times and believe me you can improve your scores dramatically by studying smartly, efficiently and in shortest possible time (by just concentrating on 20% weak area)
2) Just follow my another article on How to Solve MCQ Questions (the article has been published in many magazines.) Since SAT 2 is a multiple choice exam, below link should also help greatly
http://nrispeaks.wordpress.com/2010/01/27/multiple-choice-question-mcq-exams-how-to-crack-them/
Update:16 Oct 2010
The key changes being 1) Minimum SAT2 score of 1800 2) NIT-K having obtained a code number from Collegeboard for automatic SAT 2 score submissions, 3) Fee is proposed to be increased to $7000 (from $4000 earlier), subject to approval from ministry.
Update: 12 July 2010
Finally, DASA merit list has been published. We wish all the best to the blog visitors and wish them a great career. Live and enjoy each day of your college life butdon’t ignore your studies. DASA candidates need to put that extra effort to sail thru the studies as compared to AIEEE candidates.
We are in the process of collecting some useful ebooks and question bank for 1st semestercandidates to help them keep track of their studies and not lose sight of it.We would provide the link of the study material within one week to all blog readers as complimenray gift for visiting this board and helping each other. There is no need to provide your SAT2 scores as same has been noted in the merit list.

Choosing Between Electronics and Computers Branches
1) College Preference by NRIs
Question: Should I choose Engg Branch vs. Top College
Answer: Select the best college for your rank- but dont compromise on your branch. The best way is to first choose your preferred branch in top 30-40 colleges. If the rank is not good, try to get your second best branch selection in top 30-40 colleges. Try not to do engg from a college not in top 50 engg colleges of India. Preferably, select a college not by its location/metro but the overall rank of the college.
Following is a list of NITs most preffered by NRIs (in descending order of competition) during 2009. Please note that this list is skewed heavily towards south India NITs (for e.g .NIT-Calicut is preferred over NIT Warangalbecause of regional background of applicants)
1) NIT Surathkal
2) NIT Trichy
3) NIT Calicut
4) NIT Warangal
5) PEC Chandigarh
6) MNNIT Allahabad
Following NITs also see some demand from NRIs(but notsimilar heavy demand as for above listed colleges-it doesnt mean they are inferior in any respect)
7) MNIT-Jaipur/IIIT- Allah/NIT-Kuru/ NIT-Bhopal/NIT-Nagpur/NIT-Rourkela
Additionally, following are the ranking of Indian Engg Institutes
India Today Ranking of Top 25 Engg Institutes

Private Colleges
1) PSG College of Technology Coimbatore
2) Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi
3) Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology Patiala
4) Vellore Institute of Technology Vellore
5) RV College of Engineering Bangalore
6) Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Infocom Technology Ghadhinagar
7) Manipal Institute of Technology Manipal
2) Branch Preference
Question: What branch is best?
Answer: Normally people choose branches based on their ‘scope’ (i.e. career potential) rather than their interests. However, there is there is no one in this world who can predict which branch will be best employable four years down the lane. There is simply no way you can predict that. So what is the solution? Go by your gut feeling. There is nothing called a good branch and nothing called a bad branch. A good guy in a bad branch is much more employable than a bad guy in a (so called) good branch. If you have the love towards a subject, then go for it. If you dont know your interests, one can follow the rat race by following in the footsteps of last years branch preferences by successful candidates. In the end, one can achieve anything in spite/irrespective of his educational background
(Please refer below link to understand how AIEEE candidates selected their colleges and branches. The College selection by NRIs have been slightly different from AIEEE candidates as listed above but branch selection by NRIs has been in tune with AIEEE candidates.)

However, if someone plans to lookout for jobs in US, following link provides the highest starting salaries based on the degrees. Without doubt 8 of 10 top degrees are Engg and Chemical is high flying branch (though aerospace is listed top branch, but I understand there are some restrictions for non-US citizens for the branch. Similarly, Petroleum Engg, was considered best branch with a starting salary of $85K in a separate survey)

Regarding SAT II scores for DASA admissions, there is no precedence for admissions to NITs with SAT II scores and therefore, it would not be easy to know where one stands in the crowd. Boarders can certainly share their SAT II scores (alongwith CBSE XII PCM %) to gauge water. By the way, one can submit the best subject scores from 2 dates if giving exams on both 1 May and 5 June (eg. submit physics and Maths scores from 1 May and chemistry from 5 June , if those scores are best).
Many parents have sent their SAT II scores to me asking if they are good enough. Since there is no such precedence of the co-relation between the marks and NIT/branch, it is really difficult for me to answer. However, I can make out that May 1, 2010 SAT test has been pretty tough and scores are not in high 2300 (I have heard from inner circles of SAT training centres that May SAT 2 tests are normally tough). If people really would like to know where they stand, they have this board where the scores could be shared for better understanding of the subject.
Sir,
My daughter has got 1940 in SATII What is her chances in getting into PEC Chandigargh..What is a good alternative to NIT Durgapur(my state) which is way below in college rankings? Is DCE safe for girls?Any information on DCE hostel for girls??
I can understand your dilemma wrt college rankings, safery and SAT marks. My take on the whole issie is like this-
1) The branch comes first for a given set of colleges (similarly ranked). For your specific case, you are not getting a good branch in top 5 colleges preferred by DASA. MNIT-Allahabad is ranked in top 3-4 NITs per AIEEE students preferences but does not appear in the list of preferred colleges rankings as per DASA preefernces by NRIs for many valid and invalid reasons. NIT-Jaipur could be other good option for you.
2) DCE is better or equal to all NITs. full stop. Last year being first year many parents didn’t know about it. This year I expect good competition for this college (please note it is outside DASA scheme as one needs to apply separately per college website instructions). I can say that the Perception Of Safety in most cities does not match with Reality- I find Delhi (being from that region) as safe as any other cities and as worse as it could get. One needs to know how not to be at wrong place at wrong time (wrong place, odd hours, avoid risk taking at all times). In any case, this is another subject altogether and I respect every individual’s perception about safety.
3) If above choices doesn’t work in your case, NIT-D is also a good option seriously ( how can I say it is not a good option as it’s my alma matar:) )
My daughter got admission at MNIT Jaipur through DASA in 2010-2011 year. She completed 1st semester and studying in 2nd semester. Initially she preferred Mechanical branch and she got. Now, she wants to change her branch to Computer Science.
Is it possible to change branch now? if yes, pl guide us how to go ahead for change?
Thanks & Regards
Bhudev Singh
After the admission process is completed (July/Aug), the branch can only be changed at the institute by making a request and depending on any vacant seats for the desired branch. The best thing would be for you to contact the college admin and try to talk about it.
Just in case the branch cannot be changed and you would like to be in Computer Sc at any cost, I think you can take fresh admissions this year (however a year will be lost) provided minm SAT2 score criteria of 1800 could be met (from previous score or new score).
Sir,
NIT-K demands a score of 2200+ for most of the branches. But what about the branches like IT and Material and Metallurgical Eng. How much would u think hey would demand?
The below link has all the info. Matl and Metallurgy (and all those branches which are not specifically noted in the below doc) could be had with 1800. IT is noted separately at 1900. These numbers are all indicative and could change by +-50 points easily.

Dear Sir,
Do you know of any other good colleges outside the DASA scheme which offer admissions through the NRI quotas, the SAT scores or only the class XII board marks?
Regards
Shubhankar
Most of the private college have quota for NRIs (offcourse higher fee than even management quota). The names of colleges are given in one of the post on the blog and the best of them are VIT and TIET-Patiala, Manipal. There have been lot of messages from the blog readers on this blog-please also go thru them.
sir
“DASA-SAT2-Cut-off-College-Branch” this link isnt opening for me,and i do have adobe reader……could you help.
For DASA, the pdf doc showing expected college/branch for a given SAT score is given below s available
http://nrispeaks.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/dasa-sat2-cut-off-college-branch.pdf
sir i wanted to know if 12th board exam marks are as decisive as sat2 scores for admission into top nits. For a student getting approx 80%, how are the chances? Is there a certain limit of percentage.
If you are talking about DASA scheme, 12th scores have almost become non-productive unlike before- you just need to score 60% to clear the eligibility. However, do study well as understanding of basic concepts will definetely help in engg studies.
My Son Rohit scored 2290 in SAT2 subject test. He is not keen to join typical engineering branch. Which are the other branches which have scope apart from ece, mech, comp science etc.
Is areonatical, nuclear engineering, nano technology etc have any scope in India?
will he get aerospace engg in PEC? How is the college PEC?
Thanks.
ganesh
I have seen quite a few cases where the person took únconventional’ branch but the end result had NOT been better than conventional branch. Please do evaluate your case if the interest in engineering branch (conventional or unconventional) is due to genuine interest in it or because there exists an easy route of DASA but interest or the heart lies somewhere else? It’s an interesting discussion and would request what other boarders feel on this issue.
Yes,I personally do agree with Mr. Raj here.In general, the NRI students prefer to go for engineering as easier DASA route is available to them. Also, they don’t want any sort of comeptition with fellow students of India for other courses as they fear of getting lower rankings, including some of the school toppers as they are not exposed to such environment.(I don’t count few exceptional case here).
Manoj Arora
Thanks for the reply. If he gets Aero in PEC what is your advice?
Can he take it skipping conventional engg branches?
Also how is the campus recruitment in PEC?
Thanks.
Aero in PEC is second best after IIT-Kharagpur. There is a very good campus recruitment as well. However, please note if you have plans for master in US than getting a decent job after masters is not easy, specially after 9/11 where migrants are subject to restrictions in certain areas in aerospace. When I had replied on the unconventional branches on previous querry, I had all these issues in mind (including nuclear science).
is a sat 2 score of 1900 enough for mech engg in nitk??
Please refer the main post above for the discussion. The link is reproduced below
http://nrispeaks.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/dasa-sat2-cut-off-college-branch.pdf
Dear Mr. Tyagi
You are doing wonderful service to all NRI community. Thanks for that.
I have few questions
1. For my son whats better option electronics communication engineering. DCE or NIT-Surathkal?
2. SPA delhi is not approved by COA. What are repurcations?
Should i try for my daughter at SPA or MNIT Jaipur is also good ?
Prashant
It’s good to know the info was useful to you.
1) DCE vs NIT-Surathkal is a difficult decision, frankly. DCE is known for it’s Mech Engg and it’s campus placements is next to IIT’s only because certain companies look that X-factor in their recruitees (placement is better than few IIT’s as well). However, for some south guys the place could be a bit tough to manage as compared to NIT-Surathkal. Since DCE has started taking NRIs from last year itself (separately, not under DASA), many people don’t know about this choice.
So if you are from north side, give a serious thought to DCE. For others- it’s a tie.
2) MNIT Jaipur is a good option (after DCE/PEC/MNIT/IIIT-A, north side colleges). I wouldn’t suggest SPA (simple fact is it is not ranked highly)
Thanks for your reply..clarifying about DCE n NIT-Surathkal..Really apreciate.
My 2nd question was about good architecure college..
I have only 3 good options thru DASA
1. NIT-Trichi
2. NIT-Calicut
3. MNIT-Jaipur
VNIT-Nagpur opted out of DASA. How u can rate above three?
Then other option is SPA Delhi. They have NRI seats.
But SPA does not have aproval from Council of Architecture.
Do you suggest any other college for Architecutre?
I m from Maharashtra..bit aprhensive about putting my daughter in far away colleges.
I would go with NIT-Trichy. This NIT (alongwith Surathkal and Warangal) is treated alongwith IITs for most practical purposes as many students (more than 100 every year) join here leaving behind IITs as they can get better branches here.
Dear Sir,
We are NRI (Non Residence Indian) residing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
My daughter studying her +2 here and would like to apply for her Engineering 2011
through Dasa Scheme. As we are also from SAARC countries, we have little bit
confusion on your below fee structure. In which category we are?
Is it USD 7000/- OR USD.3500/- ?
1. Tuition Fee (for first year) along with the application, is USD 7,000*
For candidates from SAARC countries, it is USD 3500*
Kindly confirm back.
Thanking you in advance for your kind reply.
Best regards
Raghu.K.P
Abu Dhabi, UAE
The applicable fee would be $7K pa in your case (all NRIs).
Dear Raj,
What is your advise on minimum score of 1800 for SAT2.
Are they going to reduce this minimum requirement at later date.
Thnx
Sunil
Going by last years data, applying a cut-off at 1800 would reduce the number of eligible candidates by 1/3. So a lot of seats are expected to remain vacant and at that point some of the NITs could relax the requirement (pure speculation- don’t believe in this and make alternative arrangements if scores are below 1800).
Can you give me ranking of NITs in North India?
Sumant

sir can you please give the information of bitbahrain. thanks
As far as BIT Bahrain is concerned, I have been hearing rumours that it could shut its shop soon for the reasons of difficulty in getting lecturers from India. In any case, I would not recommend it over most of the NITs.
sir i’m from nepal . is there any possibility of getting nit college and can i get addmision in second year
DASA scheme allows overseas students including from Nepal. If you can get SAT2 score of 1800 in PCM, you can get admissions to a NIT. DASA scheme is for 1st year admissions only and I really do not know any way by which you can get admission in 2nd year.
Dear sir,
Can ypu please tell me which nit should I opt for, nit suratkal or warangal as my friends have suggested nit-w.
thank you
naresh
The selection of the college is a very much personal preference and it depends on lot of things, viz, your home estate, preferred branch, faculty, placements, infra, cosmopolitan culture preference, city-based family support, travel convenience etc-etc. My preference is same as that of most NRI’s – NIT-K/NIT-T/PEC in that order. The popularity of the colleges can be gauged by the higher marks required to get admission for a given branch under DASA scheme or AIEEE. NIT-K has been gaining in the national rankings as well over recent years- the main attraction being good administration, non-partisan faculty and cosmopolitan culture/food of the location. (I may be wrong in this assessment alongwith the majority of NRIs)
Dear sir,
Thanks for your feedback regarding my previous query. I would also like to know which is better for mechanical engineering between PEC and NIT-Trichy. Also, recently my cousin brother told me that IIS was taking part in AIEEE. so will it also participate in the DASA scheme?
There are many colleges that are part of AIEEE but not part of DASA scheme (IIIT-Hyderabad is one major example)
how much shud i score in SAT 2 in order to get chemical engineering in NIT calicut or trichy
Please refer to below linked doc for your query on expected cut-off for a combination of college/branch.

comparing NIT trichy and SRM chennai which one is better.
since you have more information you can suggest us.
Thanks.
ganesh
I would suggest you to have a closer look at rankings of the two institutes- there is no comparison between the two colleges at national level. NIT-T always manages to rank within top 20 tech colleges.
NIT-T is better rated than SRM in all surveys.
Dear KC,
I appreciate your continual contribution on this blog. I request contributions from few more parents, especially those who have direct info of the college where their ward is studying since by sharing we can certainly contribute positively to the community. Our goal from the beginning has been to feel good if this blog can help even a single career.

Sir,
Wish you a very happy new year. I would like to know which of the NITs have the best faculty for electronics and communication.Thank you.
Based on feedback from some of the fellow blog readers, ECE branch really does not have a good infra anywhere in India (most IITs even don’t have a separate Electronics branch). I would bet on NIT-Trichy, NIT-K and PEC- as best of the lot in DASA.
Dear Mr. Raj,
A very happy new year to you and your family. Thanks for updating thru weekly digest and on this blog too.My daughter is interested in Biotech./bio medical engineering as her first preference. She is doing XIIth with PCMB.If all goes well with her CBSE and SAT-II scores, which Colleges under DASA would be the best for her? What is the second best engineering line for a girl incase she opts for?JFYI,We have also kept her options open for medical too as Biology being her favourite subject.
Would AFMC & AIMS also be a part of common medical entrance? We also have a problem with AIEEE and AFMC exams clashing on 1/5/2010.
Best Regards,
Manoj Arora
For Bio-tech, best DASA colleges are NIT-Calicut and Allahabad. Personally speaking, girls can excel in all fields, including all engg branches. Some 24 years, we had a fellow girl batchmate in mech branch in the NIT I attended and obviously, she has been doing exceedingly well. One of the junior electrical girl is a senior VP in the top IT company of India. So my humble request would be not to tie girls with any particular branch (like biotech or chem).
As for single MBBS entrance, MCI is clear that all govt and private colleges would be under them- however in a typical Indian 11th hour chalta-hai-attitude- no one really cared for the bechare students as SC let the bull MCI run amok. Last year similar condition was faced by DASA students.
I have heard that PEC-Chandigarh is having better infrastructure and also hostel condition is better for girls. What do you suggest?
PEC is a good option for those looking for better hostel, food and cosmopolitan life. While I do not have specific info about girls hostel (named after Kalpana Chawla), I understand in boys hostel, NRI students can get single room with option of cooler, good food (I mean punjabi food like aloo paratha, McD delivery at hostel gate etc.). PEC is popular for aeronautical and mechanical branches. Academics-wise looks more challenging than some of the other NITs.
In fact it is an interesting topic and I can start a new thread once I get about 4-5 responses about other colleges (since I personally do not have recent info about many DASA colleges)
Dear sir,
First of all, a very happy new year to you and your family.
As i have already mentioned about my marks to you(2100).Can you please tell me which all nits will I be able to join and suggest me which one of them will be the best one.
thank you
naresh
Wishing you a very happy new year as well. We have now uploaded the SAT2-score-cutoff-expected-NIT-branch file (given in the main post above, also reproduced below) that could provide you some ideas as to what you can expect (college/branch) for your SAT2 score.
http://nrispeaks.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/dasa-sat2-cut-off-college-branch.pdf
Good luck.
sir iam writing sat2 exams in may and june this year from saudiarabia. for admission in nits exactly which dates are advisable to book tickets to india. please suggest. thanking you.
DASA admissions should be over by 19 July 11 (1st list by 5 July, 2nd list by 12 July). The exact date range to report to institutes would be published by the respective NITs for resident and NRI students. My advice would be to plan tickets to report to institutes starting from 20 July 11 to 30 July 11
Sir,
Could you please tell me by studying under which NIT can a person earn more and learn as well – NIT-Calicut / NIT-Surathkal / NIT-Trichy or any other NITs? Also which course is better for studying and earning money – EC / Comp. Sc.?
Thank You
My frank suggestion is that if you get into any of these top colleges, your personal commitment to your goals (earn/learn) is more important than the college itself. Devote 100% to your goals, and success could be all yours. As for the branch (ECE/CSE), the earning potential is immense in CSE if you could finish in top 10% of your class (the salary difference is large between toppers and rest of the class in CSE branch).
Dear Sir,
I have started reading your blog recently and believe you are doing a wonderful job to keep us informed and updated. My son is in grade11 and could you please advice on which stream to opt for as he is interested in chip designing and gadgets, whether electronics & communications or electronics& electrical? What is your opinion about mechatronics branch?
Thanks for you feedback. Going by the interest, ECE would suit more than EEE. Mechatronics is actually, application of electronics in mechanical equipments (for example, cars)- a new branch coming from Japan- but I don’t know if companies in other countries are looking for these engineers.
dear sir, i have scored 1900 in my sat 2 subjective tests. i would like to know to which f the NITs, i would have the highest probability of getting a seat?
thankyou
You would get seat in most of the colleges and the branch of your pref-except in top 4-5 NIT’s you would not get branch of your choice. If you have no compulsion to go in particular NITs, you would have enough choices.
Dear sir,
I have attempted sat 2 test twice ..and have scored 2060 in both my attempts getting m-670 c-690 and p-700 in my first attempt and m-690 ,c-650 and p-720.
Taking these two results into consderation do i have any chance of getting admission in mech field in either nit-w or nit-suratkal?
Sir, i would also like to know if I could select individual marks and send them to nit-k?
naresh
Your best score (aggregate) is actually 2100- by considering best scores subject-wise. However, my guessestimates are that this score would not be enough to get mech in NIT-W or K. Infact due to recession-effects seen during last year, Mech branch was more in demand compared to rest of the branches. However, ECE and CSE could make a comeback this year. Try to score about 2200-2250 if you want to have the best colleges and branches- try to concentrate on Maths and chemistry exam only in SAT2 as your physics score is fine.. Best of luck
Sir,
Pls let me know the ranking of Cusat for BE. How is the placements from there?? What is your comparative opinion of Cusat with Manipat & VIT
Thanks
Raghu
I only track national rankings for top 50 colleges and have never seen Cusat in that range. So obviously would not recommend that when better choices are available. Only VIT has the rankings to be considered a potential college in comparison to good NIT’s.
Dear sir,
What is the minimum requirement to get into NIT-Trichy mechanical engineering?
For Trichy Mech between 2250-2300 would be safe score.
Now the expected SAT2-PCM cut-off scores have been uploaded in the main post above
Dear sir,
i wrote sat 2 in november 2010 and got a score of 2200…m planning to give math and physics in jan ’11…if my score has improved can i send the math and physics of january and chemistry of november?
could u also tell me with a score of 2200…which NIT i will likely get into….my course preference being B.E.Computer science? IT or EEE/ ECE ??
You can certainly send scores of different months where the scores have been best. Please await the college/branch predictor that I plan to publish. Offcourse- it will not be on the spot but just like last year can provide a rough estimate.
dear sir,
Could please give me an estimation of the scores needed for each branch in nit-k and nit-t.thanks
Hi Raj
I have been visiting your blog off and on, since the last year. I have the following queries.
My son got a score of 1950 in SATII. I appreciate that the trends of SATII scores cant be projected very accurately, but I suppose, because of your research in this subject, you would be able to comment on this. My son’s preferences are EEE Or Mech.
Homestate is Gujarat. REC, Surat, EEE not there.
Please let me know the EEE/Mech cut-offs of last year in the NITs where this Branch is there. I think, there are very limited seats.
Please also let me know Mech Cut-off for Surat as well.
Can u please comment on Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, Nirma, Ahemedabad, Vellore Institute, BMS Banglaore, as possible options if he doesnt get his prefered branch.
Regards
I am receiving quite a few requests for expected branch for a given score. I plan to make a document exactly for this, just allow me some time. Within 3-4 days it will be published. As far as the private colleges you have noted, my advice would be that you need not to worry as your son would get the branch he wants in one of the better NITs. VIT is a good college in my view based on its ranking, which is around 15 for All-India Tech colleges.
My son has scored 2170 in sat2 Can u pl tell me which NIt he will likely get and also branch?
In my opinion, your son could get into any college/branch, with a rider that getting into ECE/Comp/mech in NIT-K and NIT-T could be touch & go. Ideal target SAT score should be >= 2250. Comparison with last years scores could be risky as last year students could barely manage to appear once only in SAT exam- unlike this year.
Thanks for all the info you have been providing us.
Like u said i went through the dasa brochure, but there is no mention of NIT, Nagpur? I thought all NIT colleges are participants in the dasa scheme.
Further, is there any good institute in South ie in Chennai, Bangalore where there is good coaching for AIPMT in April/may??
NIT-Nagpur has surprisingly opted out of DASA 2011. As for AIPMT training for short period of time (2 months), I don’t know about any reputed coaching doing that. However, in Delhi area, I know there are private tutors who can provide tailor-made caoching for short periods. At the same time, I would like to suggest that such coaching for short-term rarely achieve the objective, especially for AIPMT exam which is as tough as IIT-JEE just because only about 2000 seats are available, including dental colleges.
Regards
Raj
Dear All,
2011-12 Dasa brochur has been posted on dasa web page. web link is as follows:
http://www.dasanit.org/docs/dasa_brochure.pdf
MHRD has not shown any merci in implementation of new fee ( $7000 per annum) recomended by NITK.
S.K.Jain
It is very unfortunate that HRD minsitry/NITK officials did not pay heed to representations from NRI community. NRI community has once again taken for ride. All so called leaders of the NRI community are only interested in their own interest or their funny looking awards during Pravashi Day.
Is the fees for DASA scheme(2011-12) 7000 USD is approved by HRD ministry or still there is a chance of less fees from 7000 USD?
Thanks.
NITK has formally issued the noticification of DASA admissions for 2011-12 admissions. That shows the increased fee to $7000. Try visiting DASANIT.ORG and download the brochoue for 2011.
I have 3 years gap period. am i suitable to join nit. is there any other self rules of nit.
I see no problem in your case. However, since it is a question of a career- better check from concerned offical of NITK (www.dasanit.org)
My daughter who fulfils NRI criterion, wishes to get admission under NRI quota in Architecture colleges in India like -SPA, CEPT, JJ School, Chandigah Collge of Arch , Sushant College Delhi,IIT Roorkee etc.
Can we know :
1 Do they have NRI seats, What is the admission procedure and criterion etc.
2. Which is better NIIT – Arcitecture OR pure Architecture colleges as above.
Please find below the best arch colleges in India. I am not sure if any of these colleges have NRI seats, please go thru the link of their website to check. Amongst, NITs, the best option is arch in NIT-Calicut (but ranks below pure arch colleges- to enter SPA, AIEEE rank needed is within first 200)
1. School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi – http://www.spa.ernet.in/
2. Sir J.J College of Architecture, Mumbai – http://www.sirjjarchitecture.org/
3. Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT), Ahmedabad – http://www.cept.ac.in/
4. School of Architecture and Planning (SAP), Chennai – http://www.annauniv.edu/sap/
5. Chandigarh College Of Architecture (CCA), Chandigarh – http://www.cca.nic.in/
6. Rizvi College of Architecture (RIZVI), Mumbai – http://www.rizvicollege.com/
7. Sushant School of Art and Architecture (SSAA) i.e., Guru Gobind Singh Indra-Prastha University, Delhi. – http://www.sushantschool.org/
I’ve written my SAT Subject tests last month and i got 1700 only, but 750 in maths. Can I send this score to NIT, because minimum score required is 1800.In case I write only Physics and Chemistry next time, and get a good score, can i send that too.
Yes you can send individual subject scores and any number of times you can take SAT 2 exam(I haven’t seen any limitation yet in DASA scheme). Your maths scores are decent and going by it I am confident that you can go much higher- and would get there- just believe in yourself.
Dear Raj
Can u pl advise or ask the users whose wards’ have got admission in 2010 in NIT Trichy/Surathkal/Warangal to share their wards’ experience in these NITs with regard to hostel, mess facilities and ragging, if any.
Any feedback from parents or wards themselves on NIT hostel/mess would be much appreciated. On ragging my feedback had been that it is not a problem for NRI students.
Dear Krishnan
My daughter got NIT T through DASA last year. Hostel and Mess are excellent,if you are not expecting too many facilities. Facilities available are sufficient for students.Food is mostly of south indian style. No ragging at all.
Dear Sir,
This blog is a wonderful source of information about the DASA quota for potential engineering students and parents. Thank you so much for the effort that you put into this blog.
I would like to know whether there is a similar blog of this type for USMLE preparations for M.B.B.S. students. This information is for my daughter, who will complete her M.B.B.S. in Dec 2011.
Thank you,
Jacob Cherian
Dear Sir,
My son has scored 2290 in sat 2 . He will be writing in january-2011 maths subject test to improve further. Can we send all the marks together directly to Nit-suratkal after the result of january maths test or we have to send scores whenever the results are published(i.e previous test marks)
2. How is his chances in NIT-Trichy/suratkal with the score 2290.
Thanks.
ganesh
Dear Ganesh,
The scores can be sent to NIT-K whenever SAT2 is taken. The best thing is to choose auto-sending of scores directly to NIT-K when registering with Collegeboard for SAT 2 exam (to avoid paying extra fee to collegeboard for sending scores to NITK).
The score of 2290 is pretty good and should get any branches/college unless all higher rankers choose same branch/college.
Dear sir,
Thank you for your immediate feedback.
I also wanted to know which college and branch the top students have been choosing over these past few years. And sir do you have any idea how many students have been getting a perfect 2400 score.
Regards
Shubhankar
For past few years, the most preferred colleges under DASA have been 1)NIT-K, 2)NIT-T, 3) NIT-W (last year was not hot due to telangana issue) 4) NIT-Cali, 5) PEC.The most preferred branches have been ECE/Comp/Mech, however it is personal choice as I have also seen some toppers choosing civil and chem. Last year about 15 candidates got 2400, but this year I expect about 30-40 getting it since last year SAT 2 exam requirement was published very late and students couldn’t prepare enough nor could give multiple attempts.
Dear Raj,
Further to my earlier my son Rohit Ganesh improved sat2 scores from 2290 to 2340. Yeatersay I have sent the scores from college board to NIT suratkal. I understand the college board will send to NIT by postal mail. How I will know it will be reached NITK. Is there a way to check with NITK whether they have received or not?
Thanks for your earlier replies.
Ganesh
Congratulations for score improvement!! Now you can get what you want (except may be, NITK ECE as I hear quite a few students have got 2400 and now it depends where they go). It is always better to check from NITK over phone and email. NITK DASA admin have been very good all along- 3 cheers to them (sometime we forget to give credit where it belongs).
Dear Raj,
My Son Rohoit Ganesh scored 2340 in SAT2 subject test.(M-750,P-800,C-790). Is it required to improve maths in May/june to ensure he will get NIT(Trichy) or no need to re appear.
priority : ECE/Mech/EEE
Thanks.
The scores are very decent. Hopefully should get what he wants. Anyone who wishes to get no less than ECE in NITK and T, should still target 2400. Err on the safe side.
Dear Raj Sir,
You have done a wonderful job by creating this blog for discussing NRI admissions.I just have one question for you sir.
I am currently studying in class XII.I will be giving my boards in MARCH 2011.I gave my SAT 2 in JUNE 2010.
I got a score of 2340.
I would like to know if this score is enough for getting whichever stream I want in my choice of NITs?
Or do I need to get a better score?
Regards
Shubhankar
Singapore
Dear Shubhankar,
There is very high probability that you would get what you want (college/branch). At the same time, it all depends which branch/college the higher ranked candidates choose. If you are not too particular for getting ECE in NIT-K, there is no need to re-appear for SAT2. By the way, since you had taken exam in June 2010, just check if your scores have gone to NIT-K directly from Collegeboard otherwise you need to ask collegeboard to send the scores directly to NITK at small extra fee.
Dear Sir,
Dear Raj
The service you are doing is excellent and is very very useful for NRIs.
I request to use your blog to make aware the ground realities facing by majority NRIs and everybody should write to the authorities before the final approval of revised fee by MHRD, Govt of India. A mail sent to the authorities is also appended below
——————————————————————–
NIT Suratkal has published in their website that they have recomented to increase the fee from US $ 4,000 to US 7,000/- for students seeking admission through SAT2 test (DASA admissions) Every common man can understand that due to rising trends towards higher education among the youth, the private colleges and institutes are making booming business through new admissions with inflated tuition fee. As an Indian I suspect whether NITs under Govt of India, instead of helping the low income group NRIs, is also trying to do business with NRIs in line with private colleges??? Or the NIT Suratkal authorities think all NRIs are rich enough to afford the revised fee?? If so why should we go to NIT through Dasa & SAT2?? There are many top ranked Engineering Institutions viz Manipal Institute of Technology, SRM Chennai, Vellore Institute of Technology, are there with sufficient NRI quota with fee structutre between $ 6,000/- to 7,500/-.
The Committee after committee set up by the Central government to examine fee reforms and government financing of higher education, has argued that higher education is the State’s responsibility and a public good. “Higher education determines its (India’s) economic and technological progress… Government funding must continue to be an essential and mandatory requirement for support to higher education. The government/State must continue to accept the major responsibility for funding…” recommended the report of the Justice Dr. K. Punayya Committee on UGC funding of institutions of higher education (1993).
A decade later the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) — revived by the Congress-led UPA government when it was voted to power in New Delhi in 2004 — in its report Financing Higher and Technical Education, reiterated the need for government subsidy and cautioned against upward fee revision. “Any reforms in student fees have to be related to the living conditions of the students, as substantial increase in fees will push away students belonging to the poorer socio-economic strata from higher education institutions. In view of this, it would be neither desirable nor feasible to aim at increasing the proportion of the fees significantly. It is important to note that higher education in India is somewhat democratised, with a good number of students from weaker economic backgrounds entering these institutions, because of public subsidisation (involving both direct and hidden subsidies)…” says the report.
Sir, Please note that majority of the Non Resident Indians (approx. 90%) working in Middle East Countires are struggling here to meet the two ends. After all we are also Indians and let our children also study in NITs , by paying the cost of education to Govt , not with Govt subsidy. The existing fee of $4000/- for DASA students is reasonable and affordable upto a certain extent. (From Govt reports, per year the Central government invests RS 200,000/- in the education of every IIT student)
Since the fee revision is subject to Final Approval from MHRD, Govt of India, Please help our children also to fulfil their dream of studying in NITs with out costing to eschequer of Govt of India.

Muscat
I am bit confused while filling the application for AIEEE. I am studying in Muscat and planning to write the AIEEE exam in Kerala. The application form requires the complete mailing address to be written in the box shown. The next lines outside the box requires to indicate CITY, STATE, COUNTRY and PIN CODE.
I am confused here , whether I should provide the details of my current residence (Muscat) or the details of Kerala ( where I want to write the exam). I am afraid if I give the Muscat details here , my admit card may come to Muscat which I do not want.
Can you please help?
I request fellow blog readers to reply to this query. As far as I understand, AIEEE does not send the admit card to overseas address (except IIT sending it to UAE as it being a center for IIT-JEE exam)
For Indian nationals passing the equivalent qualifying examination from any institution abroad, the State of Eligibility will be determined on the basis of permanent address given in the Passport of the candidate.
Now with CBSE board Exam nearing, it would be difficult to take the SAT subject test in January’11. My daughter is not happy with her scores and would like to try it again. So is it fine to do the SAT exam after her boards in MAY 2011? What is the pros and cons if she does in May? Thanks,
I think the best time to take this exam is Oct>Nov>Dec and then June>May. If your daughter is planning to give AIEEE or any state exam then one may not be able to focus much on SAT2 exam in May. In that case, June is also an alternative as DASA would accept June result as well (but it leaves things to the very end)
Dear Raj,
Scores of my child in the first two attempts of STA 2 are 1500 and 1630 which I know are not upto the mark.He is going to appear for next attempt in Jan.’11 and possibly the june one if required. Please advise whether 1800 min scores reqd. for NRI admission would be applied in your opinion and if not what are the chances of his getting any seat with a score say less than 1800.
Dear Manoj,
DASA rule as of today specifies minimum 1800 score. If you ask me to look into future and make wild guess, my take is that there would be a set of NITs that would ask for minimum score of 1800 while some NITs could relax the rules. A total of 2000 seats and minm SAT2 score of 1800 doesn’t match since not more than half seats could be filled with the new rule of 1800. With the fee hike already too steep, I don’t think DASA scheme would remain too popular in future. With about 1800 score, one may not be able to get admissions in top 4-5 branches in top 4-5 NITs- still there would be enough choices.
However, my advice would be to, 1) Improve score to 1800, 2) Have a back-up option in a private college just in case DASA sticks with the new rule.
Dear sir,
Thank you so much for helping out thousands of students like me. I am doing my 12th std from Nigeria and plan to apply to DASA.
Here, I am finding it difficult to get any single SAT 2 subject book (though I have bought some mock tests online). Sir, as I would like to brush-up with the SAT2 theory also, could you kindly suggest me so that I may get 2-3 books for each subject(even pdf format is fine).
I would remain grateful to you for this help.
Thanks
Rahul
I didn’t realize the blog readers are so widespread that they even have difficulty in accessing basic books that we take for granted. I guess our HRD minister is not so well aware about difficulties faced by NRI community that a test like SAT2 was unnecessarily introduced where some students have all the access (including home tuitions for SAT2 in some countries) while others have to rely on their raw talent.
In any case, I have sent you the email ID of the person who may be able to help you with sat2 theory +test books. Even if you are not able to get such SAT2 books, do rely on CBSE text books and you would do well in your SAT2 exam.
Best of luck.
Dear Rahul,
Stick to the basics and if you are good at concepts, you need to just get an idea about exam format, and you will do well. My son Chirag has done XII from ILS, Lagos and he could secure 2320/2400( P760,C760,M800) just by concentrating on CBSE text and helping books. He is coming to Nigeria on 8th Dec, 2010, you may seek his advise. If some one is going to Mumbai, you can get SAT II book published by Barrons, Prinston Or College Board.
Sanjay Kumar Jain
dear sir,
iam studying in muscat, class 12…i have written sat 2 chemistry and mathematics level two and have scored 760 and 730 respectively..i plan to write my physics exam in january..i would like to know how much should i score in physics so as to have a high probability of me getting into NIT – CALICUT for MECHANICAL ENGG??….do u think i have to improve my mathematics score for the same….???
thank u
vinay
First of all let me tell you that you are doing good with your SAT 2 scores and studies (and can do much better). However, please don’t take things for granted as last year NITCalicut-Mech was high in demand compared to NITC-Computers and there were many applicants with 2300 plus score (however lower cut-off was like 2100). Therefore, while you are standing on a very good ground, do try to improve your scores to target 2300 plus.
Hope this helps.
Good Advice!
Sir,
My son wrote the SAT exam twice and his score was 2090. I was wondering if you could tell me whether he has to write the exam again to get into NIT Calicut for Computer Sc. / EC. Thank you so much for all the help and details above.
There is a very high probability of your son getting into NIT Calicut- Computers with SAT2 score of 2090.
Dear Sir,
Your service is excellent and has no comparison.
My son is studying in 12th std in Oman and he scored 2300 marks (Physics 800, Maths 790 & chemistry 710)in SAT2 Exam of Oct 2010. Is it required to improve his mark of chemistry?? Can he get Mech. Engg in NIT Suratkal or Calicut??
If the fee hike is approved by Ministry of Human Resources , definitely the dream for studying in NIT will remain as a dream only for the vast majority of lower / middle income NRIs. I request all NRIs to write their grievance to the authorities. Email addresses : dasa2011@nitk.ac.in ,
MHRD E mail addresses :

Thanks
Raghu
Dear Raghu,
Thanks for your feedback. With 2300 score your son would most likely get in NIT-Surathkal any branch you like- but no guarantee since for that 2400 is needed. My suggestion would be to re-appear for atleast chemistry exam and try to improve the score by 50 points. Since your case is not a panic situation, the exam could be given when he is free from CBSE/AIEEE/IIT i.e May/June next year.
As for the petition about abnormally high fee hike, it is a democratic right. However, my suggestion would be to write in most dignified manner and cover the issue to the point. Moreover, do not spam all email addresses, just a couple of them. Such kind of things happen every year and if someone can send me a sample petition, I can provide this platform so that all others can use the format.
Raj
Dear Sir,
Copy of the mail sent to MHRD, Govt of India.
I would like to inform you that the DASA scheme is giving a very good opportunity to get admission in NITs for the children of NRIs. Till 2010, the yearly fee was $ 4,000/- per annum, which was , upto a certain extent, affordable to middle class / lower middle class income groups, which constitute a vast majority of NRIs, especially in the Middle East region. Also please understand the situation of NRI students that they don’t have any facility to go for coaching classes in Middle East region.
Now NIT Suratkal has published the revised fee structure (extract appended below) for the admissions starting from 2011 through DASA. The new fee of US$ 7000/- (75% increase as compared to the previous year’s fee) is exorbitant and beyond the affordable limits of the above referred majority NRIs. Also note that the fee for the subsequent years is also not mentioned in their website. Since the fee revision is subject to Final Approval from MHRD, Govt of India, request you to consider the sentiments of the NRI parents of students aspiring to study in NITs.
Fee Structure*
1. Registration Fee (Non-Refundable) along with the application, is USD 250. For candidates from SAARC countries, it is USD 400.
2. Tuition Fee (for first year) along with the application, is USD 7000*. For candidates from SAARC countries, it is USD 3500*.
3. In addition to tuition fee, other fees like developmental charges, hostel fee etc., may have to be paid at the time of admission, as per the norms of respective institutes where the candidate has been allotted a seat.
* Subject to Final Approval from MHRD, Govt of India
Thanks Raghu for the copy of the email.
