PTI | Oct 7, 2011, 04.09PM IST
NEW DELHI: As many as 2.05 lakh candidates have registered for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2011 for admission to the prestigious IIMs and other B-schools.
The cities in which the highest number of candidates are scheduled to take the online test between October 22 and November 18 are New Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Pune, a statement issued by Prometric, which is to conduct the exam, said today.
“The CAT 2011 voucher sales ended on October 1, and about 2.06 lakh vouchers were sold. The CAT 2011 registration window ended at midnight on October 4 with approximately 2.05 lakh registered CAT aspirants,” it said.
Last year 2.4 lakh candidates had registered for the test while in 2009 the registration figure was 2.48 lakh.
The statement said 73 per cent of the total number of candidates who have registered are male.
The test this year will have two sections instead of three earlier and students will have 70 minutes to answer each of them.
Prometric has said the next step for them after the registration is to prepare and check all testing locations to ensure candidates take the exam without difficulties.
“The candidates should also familiarise themselves with the test day procedures by viewing the video that is available from the CAT website,” the statement said quoting managing director of Prometric India Soumitra Roy.

CAT 2011 registration date extended to Oct 4
Last updated on: September 20, 2011 14:27 IST
In view of a lot of new developments and announcements from various b-schools in the country, the deadline to register for CAT 2011 has been extended upto October 4. Meanwhile, CAT convenor Prof Janakiraman has urged aspirants to proof read their applications for errors before sending them. Read on.
The already longer-than-ever time window to register for the Common Admissions Test (CAT) 2011 has been further extended from September 28 to October 4, 2011. The CAT vouchers too would be on sale for four more days at Axis Bank branches until Tuesday, October 1.
Everything else remains the same.
The extension has been made to accommodate candidates interested in applying to the Faculty of Management Studies and the Indian Institutes of Technology b-schools which dropped their own admission tests to join the CAT bandwagon, says the CAT testing agency Prometric.
“The news about FMS and IITs joining the CAT needs sufficient time to percolate down to the applicant community and we don’t want anyone to miss out because of a passed deadline. Hence we decided to extend the date, CAT 2011 Convenor Prof Janakiraman Moorthy told.
The original timeline for buying and registering CAT 2011 vouchers was August 17 to September 28, 2011.
Students have been filling up the CAT online registration forms with a lot of erroneous information, Prof Moorthy added.
“Last year about 200 applicants had filled only single digit marks under the school and college marks head. If somebody had scored 93.0, they had entered only 9.0. We had to call each of them individually to tally the mistake only to find that they had made a typing error while entering the marks,” he explained. Applicants were also entering misspelled names, he added.
Additionally in 2010, several applicants had missed out on IIM interview calls by forgetting to check the boxes against the IIM programs they wished to apply to.
“I advise all the CAT applicants to take paper print-outs of the completely filled forms and verify whether they have entered all the details correctly. I am stressing on a printout because one tends to overlook errors when checking on-screen,” he said. If any mistakes are discovered, applicants can make corrections in the online application until October 4.
One should not pass up an opportunity due to incorrectly entered data, he added.
Uniform CAT to replace JMET for IITs and IISc
By Ritwik Mukherjee Aug 29 2011 , Kolkata
The joint management entrance test (JMET) previously used for admission by IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) will now be discontinued, making room for a uniform combined admission test. IIMs, IITs and IISc have agreed to use CAT 2011 as part of the student selection process of their MBA and M.Mgt programmes beginning from the academic year 2012-13.
The move was necessitated by the finding of a recent review, which said that the relatively young JMET is not too dissimilar to CAT, and that the effort to organise JMET each year seems enormous. On an average, nearly 40,000 candidates take the test each year.
Prof Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT 2011 convenor, said, “This is a major initiative that brings two premier higher education systems together. We anticipate that this will result in closer tie-ups and collaborative research work that will provide both sets of institutions a competitive edge in the long run.”
Professor LS Ganesh, former HOD, management department, IIT Madras said, “The decision to use CAT for admission into the IITs and IISc will minimise the test preparation and financial burden on candidates.”
In an official communiqué, Prometric, a leading provider of market-leading test development and test delivery solutions which is IIMs’ partner in developing and delivering CAT 2011, said CAT 2011 will be held over a 20-day window from October 22 to November 18 across 36 cities.
