BANGALORE: India has the youngest population than any other part of the world. Apart from this, India is rated as the country with more number of engineers in the making. Budding students aspire to become top-class engineers making themselves and their families proud. In India, being an engineer is a matter of respect.

Every year lakhs of students sit for various engineering entrance examinations, with hopes of qualifying. Other than the Joint Entrance Examination for IITs, there are various other top competitive engineering examinations in India. Listed below are the national level undergraduate exams worth considering, as compiled by Rediff.

JEE Main

The Joint Entrance Examination, also known as JEE is the first choice of lakhs of aspiring engineering students.
Main exam is the first step towards gaining eligibility to admissions to IITs, NITs, IIITs, IIITM and IIITDM and other Central Government/State Government funded institutions. Ranks of this exam are accepted by all colleges and universities in the country.
To take up this exam, candidates must pass the final class XII or its equivalent degree and they are not allowed to take the JEE Main exam more than three times.

JEE Advanced

JEE Advanced is the second stage of the Joint Entrance Examination.
It qualifies a student for admission into IITs and ISM Dhanbad. The top 1.50 lakh candidates who qualified from the Main exam appear in this. The total seats available are around 10,000, and with various coaching centers open across for the country, this exam is regarded as the toughest.

BITSAT

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test is conducted for admission to engineering courses at the BITS Pilani,Goa and Hyderabad campuses. The toughness level of BITSAT is said to be the same as the JEE. Lakhs of students appear for this exam every year with only 2,000 seats available around the BITS campus for various courses. 12th passed students, with a minimum percentile score of 75 percent in aggregate in physics, mathematics and chemistry. Additionally, candidates must have a minimum aggregate of 60 percent in all subjects individually along with proficiency in English. Every correct answer carries three marks with every incorrect answer having minus one marking.

VITEEE

The VIT Engineering Entrance Examination is conducted by the Vellore Institute of Technology for admissions

into engineering degree courses at its VIT Vellore and Chennai campuses. Candidates appearing for this exam should have passed 12th from any recognized board or an Intermediate or two-year pre-university examination conducted by a recognized board or High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or similar. Students should possess a minimum of 60 percent aggregate in physics, chemistry, mathematics or biology. However, for SC/ST and candidates from North-east and Jammu Kashmir, it is 50 percent.

MU OET

The Manipal University Online Entrance Test is conducted by Manipal University for admissions to various engineering courses at their campus and other affiliated institutes.
Candidates should have passed 12th or Advanced (A) level General Certificate Education (GCE)  or International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) or similar with a minimum of 50 percent in physics, mathematics and one other optional subject. English is a compulsory subject with optional subjects being chemistry, biotechnology or biology.

SRMEEE

For admissions to the undergraduate engineering courses across the campuses of SRM University, the SRM University Engineering Entrance Examination is conducted. Seats are strewn around its campuses in Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Ramapuram Part II, Vadapalani, and NCR Ghaziabad. Candidates must have passed 10+2 or equivalent from any recognized board and should have a minimum aggregate of 70 percent in physics, chemistry and mathematics. In this competitive exam, every wrong answer in physics, chemistry and mathematics carries negative marking of minus one with wrong answers in biology carrying negative marking of minus 0.7.
