Dear Mr. Tyagi
Request your guidance on two items below:
1. My son is crazy about B Tech Aerospace engineering. Whether any scope exists for the same. What are the good institues where this course is available
2. What are your views about Thapar University Patiala. How good it is when compared to NITs. They were in Muscat during an Education seminar arranged by EDCIL.
Regards
Dear Naresh,
1) PEC- chandigarh is good amongst DASA institutes, though IIT-Kharagpur is best for aerospace.
2) Thapar is good amongst private colleges and ranks after 3-4 top NITs.
So far there is no NIT Delhi in the DASA list provided by NITK. Will NIT Delhi be added?
Regards
Gandhi
The indications are good that new NITs would also be added to DASA scheme. However, since NIT-Delhi is not starting this year, it has not been added as yet. I can say that by next year, when most likely NIT-D will start, quite a many candidates from north will try to storm into it. By the way, NIT-D shall be mentored by the best NIT i.e. NIT-Warangal (Kapil Sibal is afterall a Delhite).
While registering for SAT II test there was an option to get the result online or by post. Keeping in view the dates of tests and the last date of application for DASA, I had given an option for online SAT II result for my son. As per the new DASA notification, candidates are required to update (online) information on qualifying examination and SAT II scores and later submit “authenticated transcripts” of all marks/grades secured in the qualifying examination and SAT II scores. Does that mean that we will have to take a printout of the SAT II scores and send the same by post but in that case who is going to authenticate or certify the scores?
The new rule pertaining to ‘authenticated transcripts’ smells of oven-fresh babudom and is not clear at all as applicable to SAT II score reporting. Normally, embassy can authenticate any document but I wonder how they would authenticate online result available at an URL for which they don’t have login ID-Password. I guess reporting of say CBSE XII board exam result by just noting the roll number and URL of conducting agency is clear as CBSE website doesn’t ask for login-ID password for result (it would just ask roll number).
I sense some confusion for those registered for 5 June as the postal results could be delayed and online result authentication is still a mystery. Beyond this, I would not be able to make any comment on this issue and request those concerned to contact NITK directly since it involves many careers on stake.
Regards
Raj
Scheme requires hard copy of SAT II marks to be received at NIT Suratkal by 30th June. Will those appearing for SAT II on 5th June be able to ensure this. Could you please clarify as to generally how many days it takes to have SAT II results
Regards
Naresh
It only takes 3 weeks for SAT II result. Moreover, NITK itself has suggested SAT II dates for May and June. Therefore, opt for SAT II test in June 10 without any tension.
My son has started SAT II prep from CBSE books (10/11/12) and I supplemented this by purchasing some very good mock tests. Please advice if this approach of prep is fine. Furthermore, my son is getting between 780-800 based on 5 mock tests he has solved in each subject. Is these scores good to get ECE in NITK (or does he need perfect 800 in each subject).
Thanks in advance.
Suresh
I think your strategy is working very fine. I would say that the projected scores between 780-800 are very encouraging. Though it is very first year for DASA scheme for NIT, but let me remind everyone on board that for IIT admissions until 2003 for NRI students, SAT II exam was the merit maker. And to get into the college of their choice, students needed a perfect score in about two subjects.
I believe some of the mock tests in the market are a bit tougher than the actual exam (for a good reason) and your son has bright chances to score perfect 800.
All the best.
Having clear idea on the time constraint for preparation, please advise which exam is better to concentrate? (SAT II on 1st May 2010 or AIEEE on 25th April 2010) . My daughter is really confused. She is in fact started preparation for Entrance Exams (after CBSE exam just concluded)
Regards
Dear Rao,
I can understand your dilemma. You may consider following
1) Have additional SAT II date on 5 June 10 so as to concentrate for AIEEE.
2) Evalaute chances of success in AIEEE by taking a couple of mocks. In case the rank is expected within 15000, give 100% in AIEEE and consider 1 May 10 as practice only- to be retaken in June 10
3) If AIEEE rank is not expected within 15000, give 100% for SAT II exam.
Hope it helps.

Raj
Dear Mr. Tyagi,
I am truly amazed at my learning curve in the last two days it took me to go thru your blog, which I came across by a happy accident. I couldnt gather this wealth of information in the last one year of trawling thru the net! Truly grateful to you, Sir ! Pls keep up the fantastic work !
Now my doubts are the following :
1. My daughter is due to appear for 12th CBSE in 2011. She plans to do architecture. I understand that NATA is the exam to write to get a seat in Architecture. Does this mean she does not have to attempt AIEEE ?
2. Can you guide me as to where I can find institutes which give crash courses in NATA in Kerala or T.N, which falls within the NRI schools’ summer vacation timing which is typically June to August?
3. Which are the good southern colleges for Architecture, focussing more on Kerala or T.N. Less preferably Karnataka..tho’ that also will be considered.
4. If she applies thru DASA, when does she ideally have to write SAT II, assuming she will be making at least two attempts per subject in order to better her scores. Do you think its a good idea to attempt two subjects in June 2010 itself ? Or for 2011 admissions thru DASA, is it enough if she wrote SAT II in May of 2011 ?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Romola
Dear Ramola,
Thanks for your inputs.
1) While NATA exam takes students for most B Arch colleges in India, AIEEE is for all NITs and few College of Planning and Arch. I suggest you go through the prospectus of both exams to know participating institutes for each exam.
2) Though I can’t say if crash courses are available in Kerala or TN for summer months, there are quite a few group of tutors who run crash courses in Delhi and neighboring states during summer months. Please make a search on internet for the specific tutors.
3) NIT-Trichy and Calicut. For more colleges, please refer NATA/AIEEE prospectus.
4) Ideally, SAT II exams should be taken when subjects are fresh in mind. Considering most of the topics in SAT II exams are from 11th std, I suggest to take SAT II exam at the earliest i.e. May or June of fresh 12th batch (preferably before summer break as students will start forgetting 11th std topics and start picking 12th std topics).

Dear sir,
You have been doing great job for NRI community and I consider you my ‘Guru’ on educational matters.
Sir, I do not know much about this SAT II subject test. I would be indebted to you if you could tell me the syllabus for Math 2, Phy and Chem for SAT II and good mock tests to get best scores in SAT 2. I am not necessarily looking out for free material on the net which I have found crap and waste of time on the basis of my two day search on SAT II. While there is some great info on SAT I exam, I find too little on SAT II in the ocean called internet.

If SAT II is not accepable how to level students appearing throughout the world. I think this is a better method of having a uniform assessment.
The argument that we are not ready is not acceptable because everybody is not ready – level playing is there. It is not that some already know and some do not.
The objections are mostly coming from CBSE students. The views of other examinees EDEXCEL, GCE Baceleratte to be also taken into account
How can be domestic selection of NITs based on a single test whereas NRI candidates on the basis of uneven streams ?
IT is really confusing. Which is going to benefit whom ? The authorities to take everything into consideration before coming to a conclusion.
More info such as Reidential Requirment, Academic Eligibility and Preparation of Merit List posted in the website: http://www.nitk.ac.in/index.php?q=dasa-admission-2010-2011.html.

Yes. SAT II subjects test scores are independent of each other. You should be able to ‘pick and choose’ the score for submission for DASA as NITK notice doesn’t say anything about sending the scores electronically to them (in any case, wait for more clarity on 1 Apr 10). However, US colleges ask the scores to be submitted directly thru CollegeBoard and all attempt’s scores go to the chosen colleges who pick per their own rules.
Sir,
Thanks for the latest update regarding DASA scheme..
My daughter has already written SAT II in oct 2009. and her scores are Math 780, Chem 800, and phy 780. i want to know that to get the stream of course what she wants, is these scores enogh? or does she has to appear again to improve in phy and math… b’cos those are the subjects looked upon when the scores are same with one or more students and also to know how the scores will be taken into account, in case of one or more sat test scores… is it the latest one get considered?/ or the best of all..
Kindly clarify
Thanks
I am still not getting answer to my query whether NITK shall consider the best of the individual subject score . That is if somebody is appearing both on first may and fifth june for all the subjects Can we do pick and choose to slect best of the marks in individual subjects.
Is it possible to get from college board the scores both by e mail as well as through post ?
Appreciate the response who have some valuable input on these points.
Dear Suresh,
When the choice has been given to the applicant to print the score he likes (i.e. no electronic submissions to NITK), you can print the score you like most. All subject tests given even on the same day are independent entity. Finally, to cleaR your doubt 100% on the subject, you may contact NITK.
Collegeboard can send the score the way you like (online or post). You can also change the delivery by paying extra fee.
Today, there had been an attempt to hack/hijack this blog thru comments submission. Looks like some agent for MBBS NRI seats broker wants this blog for selling NRI seats . We are forced to close the comment submission on temporary basis for security reasons. We humbly request all boarders to please standby for normal operation.

Please go thru below CollegeBoard link for documents reqd on test date

Dear Sir,
Also let me know for test centres in nagpur and websites where i can get the mock papers??
Please use CollegeBoard website for knowing info on test centres at below link.
http://sat.collegeboard.com/register/sat-code-search
For mock test papers, there are many on the internet. Just use search engines like google/yahoo/bing to find them (for example use terms like: SAT II subject Tests for dasa). It will not be proper for me to recommend any as I have not seen them all.
sir, plz letme know the best way for preparation of SAT II. as some say selfstudy is best… some say inst will help better… i m really confused… i want to join inst named achievers point… do u hav any idea abt reputation of this inst??? i m frm delhi
I would try to clear some air on self-study vs tutoring. SAT I exam (aptitude test) is mostly about mastering tricks, strategies, guessing correctly and being ready for unknown out-of-box questions. One can improve their score by attending private coaching. SAT II exam is more content-based having a defined boundary (subject syllabus). Therefore, mastering the syllabus is more important as there are no out-of-box questions. Now, for someone who has not done self-study all along their schooling and was dependent on tuition from 1st std, personal coaching suits their style of learning. On the other hand, there are many students, who like to master the subject themselves and can easily see-though the questions without help. Such students don’t need any coaching-all they need to know is what the syllabus is and what kind of questions are asked in SAT II exam. Moreover, most of the students would have already learnt the subjects by private tutors to do well in the board exams- they also don’t need separate and dedicated coaching for SAT II.
Overall, it all depends on your study-style and whether you already know the subject in good measure. The best thing to do is- take a couple of mock tests. If you are scoring in 700’s- you are fine, if the scores are in lower 600’s- better seek help.

Hi Raj
I would like to clarify something regarding SAT II. I have already written SAT II in Nov 2009 as I had applied to some US universities. Can I send my November scores to NIT Surathkal?? Or Do I have to write SAT II all over again??
Anyways, all students need not worry much as SAT II is very simple compared to AIEEE and is based only on the basic concepts of XI and XII CBSE portion.
Dear Anonymous (would have liked if you had given some name, even if not real),
The detailed rules of DASA scheme would be out on 1Apr 10 and you could know the ‘real’ answer on that date. Till then, I can only say that your Nov 09 scores should be acceptable (US colleges accept 2 years scores and for next year DASA, students would finish their SAT by Oct-Nov of this year). Please do check if you have taken all 3 subjects i.e. Maths II, Physics and Chemistry in Nov 09 per DASA requirement.
Dear Raj,
1. If you have some other alternative e-mail address of Mr. Kapil Sibbal (ksibal@sansad.nic.in), please inform as delivery to this address is failing.
2. What is your opinion on my request dated 15-3-10 for extending DASA to all those who have completed 11th & 12th standard from foreign country instead of 3 years criteria.
With best regards,
Rajendra Singh
Dear Rajendra,
1) One of our reader has suggested to use the official website of Mr Kapil Sibal: http://kapilsibalmp.com
2) The rules regarding NRI eligibility are all arbitrary. 2 years back, DASA NRI criteria was 5 years in last 7 years which was changed last year to 3 years.
Regards
Raj
dear raj,
keep up the good work through your blogs.
this new rule is unfair to NRI students. Any changes should be done with adequate notice. Further, as you have rightly mentioned in your letter why only SAT II why not other Indian entrance is not considered for admission if at all they have to conduct an entrance exam for NRI/POI and foreign students.
Some of the countries like Singapore have exempted Indian students from entrance exam and here in our own country we are implementing entrance exam.
This is a clear message to NRI’s by Govt of India and the slang term Not Required Indians aptly fits here.
I have been transferred to State Bank of India, Male, Maldives and posted here since Sep 2007 and my daughter could join me here in April 2008 only after completing the CBSE Class 10 exams. She has been studying in the Maldives for 2 years , grade 11 and 12 , and appearing for the GCE A level examinations in May/June 2010. I have 2 queries:
1. Whether she will be eligible for admission under the DASA scheme especially because she has done only 2 years of study here.
2. Since the last date for applying for SAT 2 exams is 31.3.2010 and the revised scheme is to be published only on 1.4.2010 , can we go ahead and apply for the SAT 2 exams?
1) As per last year’s rules for DASA, your daughter would not be eligible for DASA as she has not completed 3 years abroad
2) It is safe to register for SAT II exam, without waiting for the declaration on 1 Apr 10.
Mr. Raj,
Pl let me know best NIT for elctronics and communications and chemical eng. through DASA quota. Pl also let us know about any change in policy for new DASA rule for SAT exam.
Thanks ,
Savita Gupta,
U.A.E
Both NIT-Warangal and Trichy are equally good for ECE, Che (per AIEEE merit pref.) As of now, the merit would be based on SAT II and the detailed procedure would be out on 1Apr 10.
Do we still have to pay $4000/- per year fees for DASA admission after the change in the DASA scheme of appearing in SATII.
Azzam
Regarding fee for DASA seats and other details, the info would be out on 1 April 10 on NITK-Surathkal site. The new arrangement is not general competitive exam but only to fix merit list for DASA seats and I guess the fee structure would be on similar lines.
Actually, I am quite comfortable with this new scheme. I am not from CBSE board. I finished IB (equivalent to 12th standard) in December, last year. According to me, SAT 2 is the best way to examine students. Since most of the seats from top NITs like Trichy and Suratkal were always cornered by CBSE students. SAT 2 will definitely give some chance to non CBSE candidates to get admission in decent trades and colleges. Moreover, I think you dont need any kind of special preparation/tuitions for this sort of exam. Simply knowing the basics in PCM is enough to get you a good score. Format is not really hard to get used to.
Dear Mr.Tyagi,
What a wonderful blog ? Plenty of excellent information about DASA admissions.
Could you please inform me, is their any separate Quota under DASA scheme for Foreign nationals?
My son is an American citizen. Or they all will be grouped under NRI category only.
Keep up the good work.
Dear Divakar,
I would rather say DASA scheme (and seats) are common for NRI/PIO/Foreign Nationals. There is ‘no quota within quota’ if I am allowed to borrow the terms from Women Reservation Bill.

Raj
It is very surprising that the Ministry has introduced the new system for admission to NITs at this very very late stage when the students are really working hard to get a very good score in the class XII board exam. It is heartbreaking for them to know that all their effort is in vain and have lost interest in the upcoming exams.
It would be highly appreciated if the new system is introduced from the next academic year when the students are well aware of the new scheme and be prepared in advance to take up such a situation !

Dear Raj,
Can you cover in your representation another aspect i.e. “Request to extend DASA scheme to all those who completed 11th & 12th from foreign” instead of present requirement of 3 years of education?
As I understand, DASA is provided to NRI since there are no good facilities available in foreign countries for coaching & to prepare themselves for competitive examinations (AIEEE & IITJEE etc) and DASA definitely fills this gap to certain extent. However for students to be eligible for DASA it is compulsory to study 3 years in foreign country out of last 6 years and pass 11 & 12 from outside India.
Presently students completing only 2 years (11th & 12th grade) from foreign are not eligible for DASA even after the fact that similar hardship is being faced by them as all those good coaching facilities are not available to them as well and such coaching is normally taken during 11th & 12th grades. Therefore to provide justice & equal opportunity to all the students who are facing similar hardship in foreign, scheme should be modified to change the eligibility criteria for DASA and make eligibility open to all those who passed 11th & 12th grades from foreign countries.
I would suggest such representation may be sent by the parents also who are facing such situation.
Thanks and regards,
Rajendra Singh
dear mr tyagi,
thanks for all your efforts in helping the NRI students.a great job done.
i am waiting for you to give us information regarding the SATII exams.although i am not at all happy with the sudden announcement, but would have to swallow the bitter pill along with all other affected students.
i have a querry: my daughter is appearing for grade XII examination.she has taken pcmb & is intending to become a bio-medical engineer.kindly suggest me in which branch she should do the basic engineering,as she wants to do Masters in bio medical engineering from usa or australia.
best regards
soniya
I have now posted the promised article on SAT II. It took me some time as work-related exigencies kept me out for some time.
For your query, Bio-Medical Engg is only offered in NIT-Rourkela. I suggest you check the list of branches offered in the various NITs (available on this blog under DASA page). If not sure, ask an expert in the field as this is a question of a budding career.

Hi Blog Readers,
A revised letter to HRD ministry on DASA scheme has been uploaded at below link

Raj
Dear Raj,
Draft is quite good – finely worded.
Would you advise individual mails to HRD on a big scale?
Thanks for the great job you are doing.

Anil
Dear Anil,
Frankly, the parents who are feeling that new rules are unfair to the upcoming academic year are doing their ‘karma’ by protesting the high-handedness. Personally, I feel the pain and have full empathy with them.
For those blog readers who feel that I have personal interest on the issue as I could be affected, please note my child is still younger and is many years away from this scheme, if at all.

I have lodged my concern in the government portal for public grievances with Department of Higher Education (HRD).

Dear Mr.Raj,
Considering the cirumstances,as a parent, I felt that a detailed explanation has to be provided to the concerned authorities.Hence, I sent the following mail to the MInisters :
Dear Sirs,
This change of basis announced very recently for arriving at the Merit List based on SAT II scores has come as a complete surprise to NRI parents and wards in the Gulf and elsewhere. We hope you would appreciate the concern that we all have as parents for this very late announcement through NIT Suratkal.
Till date there has not even been any discussion regarding the pros and cons of the existing system and the likely move to shift to an altogether new system. We sincerely feel that even the timing of the announcement is also inappropriate with the CBSE exams in progress for XII standard students.
Being the citizens of a democratic country we would have expected a more democratic approach to the implementation of such policies particularly on matters that affect scores of aspiring students for no fault of theirs.
You have a system in place for several years. There is no inkling to anybody that this could be changed. No debate has taken place on the issue till date.Even a day prior to the announcement no student was aware of what was in store for him as fas as his aspired admission to NITs etc is concerned. The Institute authorized to organise this admission procedure suddenly announces a basis that nobody could ever imagine for admission to any of the institutes in India.
To the extent my knowledge goes, there is not even one reputed all-India-level Institute in India that uses performance in SAT II as the basis for admission. We are unable to comprehend the logic of using a student’s performance at an exam conducted by a foreign organization as a basis.
Has the Ministry lost confidence in the way CBSE exams are conducted abroad? If so, why not improve the system? Or does the ministry think that the admission based on CBSE marks has become too easy for NRI students? SAT II also, if prepared the way a student prepares for his XII Board exams in terms of the time and effort, can also be at least as easy if not more.
Why only SAT II has been considered? Why not IITJEE or AIEEE or BITSAT or any other competetive exam that is time tested and being conducted in India for a very long time? Or why not a new competetive exam altogether only for NRI students?
If the intent was to have a suitable internationally accepted basis for admission of foreign nationals, this SAT II basis could have been specifically implemented for them alone. Or is this an attempt to equate NRI students with foreign national students?
Fee structure in any case is different for resident Indian students, NRI students and foreign nationals?
If the perception was that all was not well as far as DASA admission basis was concerened and if it was felt by the ministries that a change was needed, it should have been properly debated well in time and a suitable solution arrived at an appropriately early stage so as not to have affected the XII standard students of the current academic year.Like the way it has been implemented in other cases like doing away with a Board exam for X standard students etc.
We consider this very late anouncement as completely unfair and does not provide natural justice to the affected students. Accordingly, we earnestly request your goodseleves and all the concerned in New Delhi to have a re-look at this change and make suitable amends in the form of reverting to the old system at least for this acedemic year.
It could be implemented from next year if the majority people think that this could be a better system. If announced now for the next academic year, all the NRI students will have sufficient advance information and the time that they deserve for preparation.
Kind Regards

Dear Sir
In addition to the above communications, will it be worth to pursue the matter with MHRD through our respective regions Ambassadors? They are knowledgable people who can understand out plight and convey the same to MHRD.

Mr.tyagi, thanks for all the info you have been providing.I am from nepal and have completed my +2 last year and seeking admission to NIT through DASA scheme.I am confused whether this new concept of SAT for admission through DASA is for all the countries or not.some rumours has to say it is only for other countries excluding SAARC countries.Would you please get me the right info?I am so worried.
Dear Utshav,
Though full details of DASA scheme would be announced on 1 Apr 10, i think SAT II would be manadatory for all (no mention of SAARC or non-SAARC in the notice.)

Raj
SAT is the gateway to entry in US universities. American pattern schools follow academic year from Aug-June. Students who wish to study in US universities appear in SAT tests in the preceding December so that the scores are available to colleges well in advance. However, in Indian setting if SAT is going to be the criteria for admission then the best way to get good assessment is to take these tests well before the end of academic year in a gradual way i.e. Presat, SAT-I followed by SAT-II.
However, for the present if the hardships for implementing this scheme in the coming academic year are brought to the attention of HRD Ministry then it might help in getting some exemption for the students appearing for Class 12 exams this year.
Exactly. This is the point that needs to be drilled in the minds of concerned authorities.

Dear Sir,
Reference recent notification of admissions under DASA Scheme for the year 2010-11 by NITK Surathkal.
The notification stipulates admission seekers to appear for SAT II exam for admission to B.Tech. This has come as a jolt to the students as they were not prepared for this new stipulation. It is also not practical for students to appear for SAT II exams at this late stage.
While we can understand that the decision to change the admission criteria must have been taken after due considerations but at the same time would appreciate to kindly consider the fate of students who are not prepared at all for this change at this late stage.
In view of the above I humbly request if the decision could be reconsidered and if required then these new stipulations can be made effective from the academic year 2011-12 so that prospective admission seekers get enough time to prepare themselves as per the new guidelines.
This will be of immense help to the students who are due for admission to these courses in the academic year 2010-11.
Hoping for a favourable consideration.
Kind regards,
Arvind
Dear Raj,
The whole thing is nothing but upsetting. May be it is for good, but should have revealed bit early for everybody’s convenience.
I have emailed to all the names mentioned in this blog. Hope, they will review their decision.

Dear Mr. Tyagi,
Subsequent to the changes announced to DASA scheme yesterday while doing google as a concerned parent, I happened to find this wonderful site. My congratulations to you for providing such useful information. Request you to please throw some light on the following:
1. Does the introduction of SAT II makes things difficult for CBSE students abroad
2. Whether SAT is an online exam. How much time do they take generally for declaring results? SAT happens to be on 5th June and last date for submission of papers to EdCIL (now NIT Suratkal) generally is 30th June. Will this gap of just 25 days be sufficient to get the results and then submit the papers
3. How different is SAT from AIEEE? My son is writing +2 right now. Then he will be appearing for AIEEE after attending a crash course. Whether SAT II will need some additional or separate preparation
4. Which do you think is better as an option Mechanical or ECE
5. What has been general cut-off for Mechanical and ECE for NITs situated in north (PEC, Kuru, Jaipur, Allahabad, Surat, Nagpur and Jalandhar)
Thanks and regards
Naresh
Dear Naresh,
1) Things would be very tough for current academic year students. From next year students would try to finish SAT between Sep-Dec by trying 2-3 times to get a good score.
2) SAT is a paper-based test (as opposed to other international tests that are CBT)
3) I think for this year nothing can be done except for familiarization with the exam. I guess students would be well prepared next year. Students comfortable with AIEE exam would certainly ace SATII -provided they know the format of exam.
4) AIEEE candidates generally prefer ECE.
5) The question is pointless now with regard to PCM%. Since this is first time for SAT, there is no benchmarking- but if I am forced to say something then-anyone who scores more than 740 would get a college/branch of their choice. (I know couple of guys who scored 740-760.

Raj
I just had a doubt regarding the new criteria put front .
i had already written the SAT I last year and i see that its not taken into consideration.
In SAT II , there are two levels of math , MATH I and MATH II , as you must have already noticed.
which one am i supposed to take for the DASA scheme? Are both needed?
Also i am planning to write all the tests in one sitting , and the maximum no of tests allowed is just 3 on a single day.
So arises my doubt regarding the math test.
Also i would like to know the level of difficulty for SATII.
Dear Razia.
Just take 3 SAT II tests: Maths II, Physics and Chemistry (if you read the notice it is clearly mentioned as Maths II). You are right that one can write all 3 tests on same day. Unfortunately SAT I scoring is not considered for DASA- a very contrasting style since US colleges put a lot of thrust on SAT I.
For someone who is preparing for AIEEE and IIT JEE, SAT II will be a very soft tasty piece of cake. For candidates who had been getting admissions to DASA with 60% in PCM, SAT II will be a challenge as DASA is going to put a minimum SAT II scores in each subject (my guess is that it could be around 600- but wait until April Fools Day to know more).

All the best and thanks once again from KUWAIT
The point raised in one of the post i.e. about choosing one of the preference in the SAT Registration Form of either getting the score sheet electronically or by post is very relevant. It is ironical that students are required to make a choice on this before 31st March for their 1st May SAT Test while the details on the revised scheme are expected on 1st April, 2010!!
Dear Raj
It is a great job you are doing .We appreciate your efforts.I am surprised to hear the news of SAT as we were not having any intention of sending our daughter to the west.It is a bolt from the blue and should think what should be next step.

Dear sir,
I salute you for providing useful and ahead-time info you have been providing. This new SAT exam has thrown all my plans to wind and I am on the street. My son (UAE) had been doing very good in CBSE XII Board exam and looks like now he has gone in depression as there is no meaning of these marks anymore.
Sir, I kindly request you to provide me some useful site where I can get the SAT course topics/mock tests/scoring. I don’t mind spending few dirhams but need the info quite urgently.
Thank you so much in advance for your help.
Ramesh
Dear Ramesh,
I can understand your pain and agony. Ask your son not to lose hope since he is doing well in CBSE XII board, he will also do very good in SAT.
Generally for SAT, good preperatory material is offered by CollegeBoard/Princeton Review/Barron/Thomson Pieterson(though all are a bit pricey). I am still doing some data collection and would share the info in next few days.
Regards
Raj
Thanks for a blog that is focussed on NRI education and kudos for keeping updated information and good advices. With this change in policy for DASA scheme do you have any information related to the followimg:
1. Is it now open for all nationalities (as the NITK website says Foriegn Nationals/PIOs/NRI) or only to Indian Nationals and those who have taken exams following Indian Boards (CBSE, ISCE, State boards like Kerala).
2. Again the website says merit list for admission willbe drawn based on SAT II scores only. Does it imply CBSE or Indian board results do not play a role in the merit list?
3. Is SAT I required for writing SAT II (I am totally new to this SAT stuff).
It is unwanted timing to announce such chages when exams are in full swing disturbing the students study flow and definitely insensitive to announce without working out the full details and make all parents to await agonasingly until 1st April 2010 (Hope it will not, in true sense, become an April Fool’s Day).
Keep up the good work .
Regards
Dear Sridhar,
Please find below itemwise response
1) DASA has always been open to NRI/PIO/FN and is irrespective of any board.
2) SAT II is only criteria
3) SAT I is not required for SAT II.

Raj
Please let me know whether we should plan to appear SAT exam on both the dates
One can take SAT tests as many times as needed. However, the conducting agency would send all the scores to the colleges that you select the score should go. Most US colleges, consider the highest SAT score. Talking specifically about DASA, we can only shoot arrows in the dark as there is no procedure announced as such.
I know it does not answer your query but I guess only honourable Kapil Sibal ji has enough info about the scheme. Generally speaking, one can appear in the exam 100 of times.
Can we appear for 1st may 2010 as well as 5th june 2010 SAT 2 tests for applying for DASA scheme?Do they consider best of the two for admission into NITs?
I know USA colleges consider the highest SAT score. Not sure about DASA- as rules are not declared yet.
Dear Raj,
Thanks for your proactive actions for alerting candidates even before official pulication of such schemes.
How does the new DASA scheme affect the candidates who completed only 2 years (grades 11 & 12) outside India? Is there any change in DASA eligibility? Earlier some of the NITs were taking NRIs admissions, whether there is any change in NRI admission schemes of those NITs?
With best regards,
Rajendra
Dear Rajendra,
You have raised few valid points. Unless the rules are changed this year, completion of just 2 years overseas study would not qualify for DASA. For NRI admissions, the noticifaction is an annual event and one can safely assume that NIT’s NRI admission (mainly NIT-Trichy) would have been changed at the instructions of our highly beloved HRD minister.

Raj
There is an option in the SAT form about preference of receiving the score sheet (either electronic or paper). Will the NITs accept the electronically sent score sheets from us, or NIT, Siratkal will directly receive the score from SAT. Please advise whether I can go with the electronic option.
It will not be prudent for me to suggest anything on this as the detailed procedures would be out on 1 April 10 (April Fool Day!!) as per the notice reproduced below
“Detailed admission procedure, online application and brochure for the current revised scheme will be made available on NITK website (www.nitk.ac.in) from 01.04.2010 onwards.”
Thanks Raj.
if we give it on june 5 will we still have time for registration as it take about 20 days for the result to come
For NIT admissions, AIEEE candidates have to report between 15-25 July, depending on individual NIT. To meet these dates, EdCIL used to publish 1st merit list by 5 July and first-reallocation by 10-12 July. Keeping this in background, giving SAT exam on June 5 should be pretty OK (it is already given as an option by NITK itself)
The SAT based admission criteria under DASA is indeed a big policy shift. Could you please advise as to whether there are any good DASA / Non-DASA colleges who still follow the criteria of admission under NRI category on the basis of PCM aggregate in Class 12.
Dear Gurvinder,
SAT-based merit for DASA is obviously a major policy decision. However, I have gone thru SAT II Subjects curriculam and can tell one thing clearly that it is easier than AIEEE exam and quite closely follow CBSE syllabus. I have already requested few companies for the mock tests they are offering for a review and would share my thoughts on that soon in my future post on SAT II exam.
Under DASA, all colleges are reputed govt colleges so non-dasa colleges would not be my first preference. All private colleges would offer seats thru PCM marks. Most states have 5% NRI quota for non-NIT govt colleges and you can check if they are offering seats based on PCM marks (I have only limited idea about state-level colleges).
So, we have to change ourselves with changing times and adapt to SAT II. The test is not very difficult. However, it will put more strain on students preparing for AIEEE and IIT JEE. Non-CBSE NRIs/PIOs should breathe a sigh of relief as most creamy seats were cornered by CBSE students in past as their own exams were giving grades and not % (especially true for US-based candidates).

Raj
getting a 700 in sat isint that tough? i mean that could get you into MIT usa very very easily right?
i’m waiting for your sat 2 post!
For MIT, one needs to score about 760 in each subject.
all i can guess is cbse is no more the criteria of selection and we should start preparing for sat subjective test right? also should we fill up the registration of sat now or wait for some more orders
Yes, prep for SAT II test should now start in all earnest. The SAT Subject Tests should ideally be given when the content is still fresh in mind. Totally depends on level of preparation. As for SAT II regn, two test dates are available ( 1 May10, 5 June 10). We still have until 31st March for regn for 1st test date (1 May 10).
I request all NRI parents to go to Kapil Sibbal ji’s website (http://kapilsibalmp.com) and request him to reconsider NRI /DASA scheme admission policy for NITs through query /contact available on website.
You may also partcipate on facebook discussion at “www.facebook.com/pages/Kapil-Sibal” through topic “Qualifying Exam for admission to NITs for NRIs through DASA Scheme “.
this is disturbing ! i have been studying hard for sat now
but today i saw the dasa notification it says only students who have studied +1 and +2 from abroad are only eligible…where as until last year it was any country including india
for this reason alone i did not study for aieee much!
Please clarify if you qualify as PIO/Foreign National as they are not required to have studied abroad for 11/12. However, for NRIs, DASA rule has always been that you do 11/12 from abroad including 3 years out of 6 years.
In the latest DASA application update , the minimum requirement on SAT score of 2000 has been removed. The limit was appearing in the morning and by evening it has been removed. Iam also confused about the ‘authenticated transcripts’ of SAT scores particularly for those appearing on 5th June exam.
